We had a wonderful one night stay with Mikel. The house is beautiful and in the middle of stunning countryside. The rooms were lovely, clean and comfortable - very nicely decorated. Dinner was delish - breakfast was a feast. Mikel is charming, welcoming, and all of us (including 3 shy teens) felt like old friends by the end of our stay.

Incredible house, phenomenal Basque food, the nicest host you could ever wish for in Mikel, stunning views and the whole Basque Country at your doorstep. Other things:
- Breakfasts to die for with only the finest quality jamon and cold meats.
- Excellent routes to go mountain biking all around (it's HARD GOING though!)
- Different cuisine every night, homecooked - we had roast pork in wine, squid in its ink, hake stew.
- Extremely well-priced, cheaper than a basic hotel!
- Car essential to make the most of it.
- Great Rioja wine served in the evening.
- Sitting on the porch at sun set sipping cold beers from the well stocked fridge chatting to other guests.
- The owner Mikel even gave me a birthday present! One of those good guys you feel lucky to have met.

What a find. Despite being hospitalised earlier in the week our host welcomed us like old friends. Our suite was gorgeous. Dinner was simple and beautifully cooked. We'd definitely come back here and urge anyone visiting the area to book without delay.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked great. The suite is fabby though.

How lucky we were that the "boutique" hotel in Bilbao we wanted for our first night (just off the ferry) was fully booked. We decided to go farther afield, and ended up with the lovely Mikel and Belen in their immaculately restored mountain-top chalet with its stunning views of misty orchards (complete with donkey) and snow-capped peaks. In our comfortable ensuite room, the oak beams contrast sympathetically with the state of the art shower and superfast wifi! We had asked for dinner and expected something rustic and filling. What we got was a meal that would have put any Masterchef to shame. The Solmorejo (Cordoban chilled tomato soup with jabugo ham slivers and chopped egg) was so good that we had two lots. This was followed by a melting Stifado of ox cheek, cooked slooooooowwwly with carrots garlic and Pedro Ximenez. And accompanied by a freezing shot of PX. Bliss. A tangy, creamy parfait with intense orange jam finished a perfect meal. A bottle of Muriel Rioja was rich and plummy. And Mikel then brought out his home-made sloe anis to taste. What an evening! As we were aiming for Porto the next day, sadly, we had to leave early. Our breakfast was as wonderful as our evening meal - slices of Jabugo and Bellota Chorizo, dark, almost black, tomatoes bursting with flavour, local cured ewe cheeses, home made rolls, still warm. Croissants and jam if you wished. And one of Mikel's famous light-as-a-feather omelettes. We almost cried as we packed up and left. What a find! And what value. Mikel, you should publish a recipe book. Please?

We stayed three nights with Mikel at Ametzola in his beautifully restored farmhouse, which is close enough for day trips to Bilbao yet entirely rural. Mikel is an excellent, attentive and discreet host; staying with him is like being an old family friend, but with no obligation to socialise! The rooms have commanding views over the wooded valleys with many excellent walks. Our breakfast were delicious; and by luck, we had one evening at a local village fete, sitting with 300 others in a pelota court, eating the spit-roasted whole lamb the mayor provided, talking with locals and visitors alike. A wonderfull stay and highly recommended.
