A great lunch that included a serving of hamburger and chips. I would have preferred a few more chips with my burger but the burger itself was excellent.

We were driving home on the coldest starry Melbourne night for years, and saw twinkling fairy lights twined round the iron lace of a front verandah; and unlike the eatery strip a few hundred yards further up Queens Parade, there was available, easy parking. And that's how we found this gem of a restaurant.
It takes up the ground floor of one of the oldest pub buildings around; but the stripped brick walls, stark white plaster and inky brown oozed sophisticated 70's at its best.
Charlie's has only been open in its current role since late 2013. They do Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (but are about to change their hours, so check the web site).
We had three entres; mine involved perfectly cooked and presented scallops on rich black pudding, himself had slow cooked pork belly ( which hit the spot on such a cold night) and we shared salt and pepper squid - light and scrumptious. And a well priced, crisp Riesling - although if we had been prepared we could also have BYOd.
We shared the dining room with a family of youngsters, happily occupied munching and colouring in. Because the tables are well separated, it was not as noisy as home!
What started off as a spur of the moment escape from cooking, turned into one of the best outings we have had this year.

Great food and great service. We arrived late on mothers day but they found a table for three of us. Much easier to get a park nearby than in Brunswick St. too!
