Owner description: Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans - with a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths. You can't take a hot bath any more - the boiler went out about 1,800 years ago when the Romans left! But you can see some fascinating remains which have survived from their time. Learn about how the Romans liked to relax with an elegant culture of bathing, and admire their creativity and style. The bath house remains are a scheduled ancient monument and were once part of a fine villa. The layout of the cold, warm and hot rooms and the heating system are remarkably well preserved. The baths are ingeniously preserved in a steel vault under the A1(M) motorway. You can find out how this vault was built. Also on display are archaeological finds from the Welwyn area and an exhibition devoted to the history of the site, which was uncovered during the 1960s and 70s by the Welwyn Archaeological Society. Welwyn Roman Baths are open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays and 7 Days a week during Hertfordshire School Holidays 2-5pm PLEASE NOTE WE ARE CLOSED THROUGHOUT DECEMBER.

“Lovely little trip”

Great afternoon out. Very intersesting if small attraction. Lots to see and it is a real Roman Bath house so the kids can really get into the history. Went on a warm day and was not too busy. The kids made Roman soap out on the grass which was nice. Wont occupy you for hours, but do go along

“Visit to the bathroom”
Reviewed December 29, 2012

It was interesting to look around but it didn't take long to see everything they had on offer. There was a view of what the bath house looked like and a few interesting things for children and thy do sell quiz papers.

“Hidden away”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

This took a bit of finding and, frankly, there's not a lot when you get there. But it is interesting - and not just because the motorway thunders above your head when you are inside. They have made a fairly mundane archaeological site as interesting as it could be.

“Good value”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

Very interesting site. Very small inside but nonetheless fascinating. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. You can choose to take headphones to listen as you walk around looking at the exhibits or do as we did and talk to the guide then walk around by ourselves. The children will love it...but it's only worth an hour maximum of your time so if you're travelling from a distance then make sure you have something else to do before or after.
