“Lovely hotel, Polite Staff, Superb Food”
Reviewed May 19, 2011

Stayed at the Alverton Hotel for 3 nights. This is a very impressive hotel from the outside that sits high above the main road coming down into Truro (quite steep walking back up). We were greeted by extremely polite reception staff and a doorman that took our bags and showed us to our rooms. The rooms themselves were very spacious and clean though the carpet was slightly dirty around the edges. They were also quiet at night so a good night's sleep was assured. The only criticism of the whole place was that the lighting in the rooms was very dim and so made it difficult to read late at night. The restaurant was excellent with again extremely courteous staff who delivered a very efficient service. The food itself was "a al carte" and was some of the best I've tasted in the hotel restaurant for a long time (the braised beef was the best beef I have indeed ever tasted). All in all a great hotel that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the manor.

Very grand looking from the outside, inside is a little old fashioned but that is part of its charm. Staff were friendly and helpful from the moment I arrived to the moment I left. My room was large, warm and comfortable. Take advantage of the lounge – large leather sofas and armchairs beside a roaring fire. Free wi fi is available in the lounge also. I cannot rave enough about the restaurant, the food is so well presented and tasty I couldn't believe it wasn't busier!

A few minor complaints...It was quite noisy. I could hear everything from the room next door and the room above. Also the radiator in my room was in dire need of being bled – it gurgled so loudly it would wake me in the middle of the night and I ended up just turning it off.

As you can see the complaints are very minor, and I would not hesitate to stay there again and would recommend it to everyone.

The building is externally stunning with a grand driveway that can't fail to impress, but inside the place has sadly been really neglected, and is seriously tired. Our room was old fashioned with a bathroom that barely functioned, hmmm yellow water flowing out the taps isn't a nice touch, would have been OK if the water stayed hot but it didn't. Oh yeah and the food was average at best, and the bar prices far too inflated for a place lacking any style! All in all the hotel is a sad hommage to a wonderful building - come on managment put your hand in your pocket and sort the place out!

I stayed here with my mother, not really knowing what to expect, and we were most pleasantly surprised by all aspects of the Alverton Manor - beautiful, characterful building, fantastic (if old-fashioned) rooms, and lovely, attentive staff. Well worth the half-board option as the restaurant is excellent quality and value, in fact we couldn't understand why it wasn't busier. We had booked the 'Cornish Gardens Break' package and it is an excellent deal.

I've stayed here a few times now with my partner and, whilst we usually head for the more modern hotels, Alverton Manor just feel kinda nice. It's an old building (I think they said it was originally a monastry) which has been renovated to a degree but still has all the original features, stone archways, flagstone floors, open fires in the winter and so on. The furnishings everywhere are all a miss match of bygone times but it's terribly British with big display cases of minature painted soldiers, a library, the chapel and stained glass windows. Bedrooms are again all different, this isnt a modern themed hotel and it isnt trying to be. The food, service and attitude of the staff to their customers cannot be faulted, afternoon tea by the fire with complimentary newspapers was about £5.50 and it was delicious - warm scones, clotted cream and home made jam plus a selection of teas. Cant beat it!! If you want the beige and crome new bathrooms, colour co-ordinated bedrooms experience with a fashionable crowd - go somewhere else. If you fancy a bit of old fashioned charm, peace and quiet, and can cope with seeing the odd horsehair poking out of an old chesterfield sofa then give this place a try.

No hot water for the shower, poor TV reception, sloppy service in the restaurant. At least the room was large and the bed comfortable.
I had the sense they knew there was not much competition in central Truro.
I will not be returning!
