Reviewed March 18, 2014

A great resort and a fantastic hotel. Staff were brilliant, nothing
Was too much trouble. The hotel is themed on Africa and is done extremely well. No expense is spared and the whole experience was very atmospheric. I stayed here with my wife and would have no hesitation going back for another stay.
The only thing I would do differently is I would go earlier in the year. We went 2nd week in March. Weather was great, mid 20's, however, lots of children started to arrive during 3rd week and hotel became noisy.
As we are both in our 60's we would probably go in February next time. We will definitely return though.

Just returned from a weeks family holiday at the Lopesan Baobab with our 20 month old son. We booked full board in a junior suite.

On arrival we were greeted with a glass of champagne and very friendly reception staff who promptly checked us in. The bell boy collected our luggage and took it to our room.... that was a god send as we had several cases and the buggy. Unfortunately we weren't happy with our view but the manage was happy to help. He offered us two alternative rooms, one of which was an upgrade to a senior suite which we took (Block 8, floor 4). It had a great view of the Dunes and beach pool which was perfect. We had complimentary Lindor chocolates, newspaper and water daily which was fab. The suite was large and immaculate with comfy beds, loads of storage and tea / coffee facilities that where toped up daily.

The staff simply couldn't do enough to help you and really seemed to care that we where having a good time.

The hotels looked fantastic and is kept immaculately clean throughout with a really impressive African theme lobby, gardens and pools . Although it is very dark in places and some of the guests did seem to struggle a little. Personally we liked the ambiance! We also saw a gardener on his hands and knees picking up twigs from the planting beds..... they really are well kept!

The food was also excellent, always a good varied selection unlike many hotels we've stayed in before. Although we wouldn't go full board again as the lunch option isn't a varied and few people seem to opt for it. A snack from the beach huts looked great and a far cheaper option.

The entertainment was pretty good as far as hotel entertainment goes and there was always a lot of people about so we stayed in the hotel 5 nights out the seven. There were several bars and restaurant's to opt for so we didn't get board.

Our son absolutely loves this holiday and although to young for the kids disco / entertainment he definitely enjoyed the children's pool and the beach pool which was very shallow.

All in all we had a fantastic holiday and for the first time ever are looking to rebook the same holiday next year.

Room Tip: We would recommend a high room with a garden view. Upgrades well worth it. Also the rooms with pools...

I don't usually write on here but felt I had to following some of the previous reviews, one in particular. Myself and my partner had a fantastic time whilst staying, and the Thomson rep ( whose name is Toni not Alex by the way ) was superb. Friendly, helpful and always around if we needed anything. We didn't actually buy any Thomson trips, but that didn't stop her providing us with great help and service. The hotel is fantastic and we will definitely return, hopefully we won't have to put up with some people who just love to moan, my advice to you is Stay at home!!!

Well done Thomson ( Toni ) and well done Baobab resort.

18 March 2014. Just arrived back from two weeks at the Baobab resort - wow! The size of the place is breathtaking with over 630 rooms. There were over a 1000 guests staying whilst we were there but it never felt crowded. There are lots of pools to choose including two hidden in a quieter area and we never struggled to get a good sun bed and pleasant view. The lazy river pool is just wonderful. The buffet restaurants offered lovely freshly cooked good with lots of choice and plenty of fresh fruit and veg.
Our only small minor comments are the lighting inside the restaurants, reception lounge and bedrooms, even during the day is very gloomy. Couldn't even read a book in the room due to dim lighting with lights on. Also corridors and walkways dimly lit at night which may cause elderly or poorly sighted an issue.
Be prepared to walk as we timed it at 11, yes eleven minutes, to walk from our room to the furthest restaurant. Also the corridors are all open to the elements on one side when walking to rooms and this causes drafts and can be cool in the evening so some ladies may wish to pack warmer cardigans or jackets. Restaurant dress is fairly casual. I took several posh dresses and didn't wear them.
The hotel is set in the posh end of Melonares so many of the shops are designer and pricey. Better nic-nac shops in Player des Ingles. Lots if lovely restaurants to choose from if eating out near to hotel.
In all a fab hotel and a fab holiday.

Fantastic African themed hotel. 7 amazing swimming pools. 2 children's pools with slides and fountains in a self contained area (very safe) with kids entertainment based in the children's pool area. Fantastic hotel for families with young children. Lots of good quality high chairs in dining room and descent wooden cots that my 21/2 year old went in as we'll as my 5 month old baby. big hotel room with plenty of space for 2 cots. Beach with promenade suitable for pushchairs only 5 min walk away and goes on for miles. We loved this hotel and location so much we plan to return next year. My 21/2 year old loved the twice daily disco!

We stay in various hotels in the Meloneras area of Gran Canaria each year Including The Meloneras Resort and Spa , The Villa Del Conde and Riu Palace and watched the Baobab being built 5 years ago so we finally stayed last January.

Quite simply the Best , the staff are very friendly, the quality of food far better than the other hotels, we stayed on a Half Board basis , Lobster, smoked salmon , cavier and show cooking each night, we sat outside for breakfast and dinner and we loved the cats outside unlike some earlier reports ,as they gave the hotel a less Multi National resort feel and more homely.

The Entertainment was good for hotel usual fare the only slight problem is the theatre area is not that big for a hotel the Baobab size and can feel a little cramped at times but never a problem getting served by waiters ( you can check your bill in the TV in your room via interactive service so no hiding my sly Gin and Tonic when my partner popped up to the room to get changed!!!!!)

You can also get a discount at the spa in the Lopesan Costa Meoneras Resort and Spa
if you stay here and the Spa is amazing we find half day is enough to use each of the rooms especially the flotation room.

I feel slightly disloyal staying at the Lopesan Boabab from now on as I loved the Lopesan Costa Meloneras over the years but I have to say The Boabab is on a level with the best hotels in Mexico but a quarter of the price and quarter of the flight time from Glasgow for us its a no brainer

The rooms

Amazing!! Plazma TV in our standerd room with sperate shower/ Double bath area from double sinks and toilet and plasma lights in wardrobe, I would suggest a room on a high floor if you don't have children with you ,as the views are fantastic

I also loved the animal models dotted about , it sounds tacky but it works well as does the fragrence subtly infused throughout the hotel and the monkey sounds effects are fab too.

This hotel would be a fantastic Honeymoon venue as Meloneras is very Chic ,well compared to Playa Des Ingles anyway and Puerto Rico is very down market Puerto Mogan is nice but a bit isolated.

We have booked to go on the 5th of May for a week and I can not wait to go back , don't hesitate to book this hotel and chill out when there

Room Tip: Top Floor for views

Lopesan Baobab Resort Location Exclusive luxury Lopesan Baobab Resort was inaugurated in 2009; it is located in the south of the island of Gran Canaria, in the exclusive Meloneras holiday area, just a few walking minutes away from the extensive, several kilometres long, Maspalomas beach and the impressive landscape of sand dunes. Famous Maspalomas lighthouse is situated nearby, as well as the long coastside promenade. ExpoMeloneras Convention Centre is also located only a few steps away from the hotel. General description Five-star hotel Lopesan Baobab Resort has become one of the preferred destinations for family holidays of Spanish national tourists. Thanks to the uniqueness of its architecture inspired by the African continent, its impressive water landscapes with pools, rivers and waterfalls, as well as the high quality services offered, this hotel shows off ethnic charm, modernity and refinement. The hotel’s main entrance leads guests over a picturesque wooden bridge to the reception area, passing a grandiose aquatic landscape with waterfalls. From the lobby you can reach the hotel rooms or the large garden area, on a surface of 56,000 square metres, in the centre of which a large 21 metres high wooden African lodge is located; this lodge houses a restaurant and a bar. Common areas are connected by an extensive sheet of water crisscrossed by small bridges. In total there are nine swimming pools (all of them heatable at different temperatures) covering a total surface of 4,245 square metres. Specially outstanding are: the “lazy river”, two artificial beaches, pools with waterfalls and caves, the “chocolate” pool (the name of which refers to its brown colour) and the “two palm trees” pool, as well as a pool with water attractions for children and babies. The hotel’s leisure and recreation areas are enriched even more by a complete entertainment programme with a variety of activities during the day and in the evenings. Materials used for the hotel’s interior decoration and design were carefully chosen searching the appropriate item for every single corner of the hotel complex. On the walls of the hotel’s buffet restaurants guests will appreciate layers of natural coconut and wooden bricks, as well as French porcelain stoneware on the floors of the pool areas. Regarding the hotel rooms an exquisite finishing with high-quality woodwork and sound insulation was chosen. Other materials which can be found around the hotel are dry bamboo, die-cut steel or coloured mortar with added shredded straw to simulate adobe. Rooms The rooms’ interior design carefully combines colour schemes and African ambience. The Lopesan Baobab was built on a plot of 72,000 square metres with a total of 522 standard double rooms, 8 of them modified for guests with limited mobility and 17 deluxe double rooms with pool, perfect for guests looking for privacy, romanticism and/or relaxation; there are also 55 family doubles and 15 family doubles with direct access to the “chocolate” and the “two palm trees” pools, as well as 8 superior double rooms, 40 junior suites, 20 senior suites and 1 royal suite. There is no doubt that the hotel’s different room categories can meet any requirement or need guests may have, since they can choose from comfortable standard rooms, spacious family rooms, luxury rooms or magnificent suites for young and old. All rooms offer excellent views which vary depending on their location, as for example beautiful panoramic views on the dunes, on the nearby palm oasis, on the hotel’s garden area or the island’s mountain landscape. Gastronomy The Lopesan Baobab Resort offers high quality cuisine in all restaurants, characterized by an elevated level of creativity. For this purpose the hotel’s select kitchen staff puts special emphasis on using the best products and on preparing them in presence of the hotel guests. The ‘Akara’ Restaurant is only open for dinner and its name refers to an African recipe; it offers flavours from the very heart of Africa with a menu committed to originality. The hotel’s second a la carte restaurant is the ‘Pili Pili’ Restaurant, open at lunchtime and specialised in paellas, seafood and grilled meat. Furthermore, there are two buffet restaurants, the ’Marula’ and the ‘Baobab’, the premises of which are conveniently separated to provide differentiated atmospheres where delicacies from international occidental cuisine are served. The restaurants’ wine cellar provides an excellent selection of the finest wines from around the world as a complement to the great gastronomic offer. The hotel also hosts five bars, two of them located in the pool areas; Henry Stanley bar and Mungo Park Bar complete the resort’s restaurant and bar options. Leisure and sports activities The hotel has at its guests’ disposal a complete and varied entertainment programme, offering something for everybody. Many of the organised activities take place during the day and in the evenings, when it’s just the right time to have a drink or enjoy professional shows on the hotel’s outdoor plaza, on a specially designed stage, next to the magnificent African lodge. Furthermore the resort offers a fully-equipped gym and a varied wellness programme, as well as other activities for sports fans. For golf fans the golf courses of Meloneras Golf and Maspalomas Golf are available and a free bus shuttle service to these golf courses is provided by the hotel. For the little hotel guests fun is guaranteed at the hotel’s Panchi World Mini-Club with a stage and two pools for children, one of them with a water-slide. The Lopesan Baobab Resort also houses specially equipped rooms for conferences, conventions and events with highly functional and stylish facilities which can be easily modified and adapted to hold particular events. The hotel’s large panoramic ‘Karisimbi’ room is specially outstanding with a size of 1,002 square metres and a capacity for 800 persons, the perfect choice for any kind of celebration, conference or event.
