“Holiday 2013”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

We returned to this hotel as we were so impressed by it last year, the first time we have ever returned to the same hotel and location.
Fair to say we were not disappointed, the Hotel is fantastic with great facilities, brilliant staff, good range of food, facilities and activities. Live shows every night, resident band in the Richard Burton bar, great for both young and older families.
If you like to escape the Hotel confines it's just a short walk to the supermarket (0.49€) for a 300ml can of Amstel (€3.70 for 400ml in Hotel). there is also a shopping centre, plenty of designer stuff.
The promenade and some great restaurants are just 5 minutes walk, the beach around 10 minutes.
We met lots of people who were also on their 2nd and some on their 3rd visit to the Baobab, all like us very impressed with the place.

If there is any slight criticism then in some areas the hotel needs to refurbish/renew (lots of broken sunbeds), some of the furnishings just starting to show signs of wear. However when we were there a suited bloke was walking around taking photographs of the sunbeds and furnishings (from HQ apparently).
The other issue was the sunbeds - last year we went Spring Bank but this year it was August and the sunbed problem was quite serious. Mainly caused by people reserving sunbeds and then rarely using them so they lay empty all day with towels on. We even had Spanish and German families fighting over Parasols (people kept moving them!!).
No problem if you are happy to be up and about for 7.30-8am, after that then it's a struggle, unless you are happy to walk around all 9 pools in which case you will find plenty of sunbeds - might just not be in your ideal location.

Avoid the SuperCat trip - total waste of time and money. Do visit Puerto Mogan - beautiful!

We will be going back again, its a great place.

Fabulous accommodation , location excellent. Food too was excellent we went half board.
There were plenty of places nearby to eat out if you wished to. The area was well kept. This is an excellent place for babies and young children. There was an animation team for everyone and the entertainment was of good quality.

Room Tip: If you want quiet stay further away from the children's area.

We have just come back as a family of 4 children aged 7 and 9 from this super hotel. I can not say how helpful the staff were, we had a problem the first night which the next morning was delt with straight away no problem at all.

The hotel itself has def the wow factor. We stayed in a suit over looking the lazy river which was really great, two nice big rattan sun loungers outside on a huge balcony.

If you ate at the 8.30 sitting we felt if you sat outside it was like being in a nice restaurant rather than a busy hotel.

The only annoying thing yet again is the bed situation but after a couple of days you get friendly with the other people who get up early and it ends up being quite sociable.
The bathroom with very moden, two sinks, great big sunken bath, big wet room.

My only small problem with the bathroom was that the cleaners as good as they were did not move my stuff on the sinks and wipe behind them, which for a 5 star you would expect that.

All I can say is that we met some new lovely freinds there and so did our daughters and I can't recommend this hotel enough.

Room Tip: Go for a room in block 4 over looking the lazy river then you don't get the noise from the bars...

Just returned from a fabulous 2 week stay at this hotel. The hotel was so amazing and certainly the best place we have every stayed at. Its so spectacular to look at. Upon arrival our cases were taken from us and while we checked in, a waiter brought us drinks. The food was fantastic - we had breakfast and evening meals and I thought I would get fed up eating on site for 2 weeks, however there was such a choice and it was so delicious. I found myself wondering each day what the choice of soup would be as I was looking forward to it that much! The room was clean with a lovely view over the lazy river pool. Lots of storage space, great bathroom and top of the range toiletries. We were given pool towels and also a bag to carry them in. There is the same problem with reserving sunbeds - we took it in turns to get up and put the towels down - however every holiday I have every had, I have had to do this - its expected now. The pools and surroundings were fantastic and kept clean. The staff can't do enough for you. Great choice of entertainment and we also walked into Maspalomas to visit the bars. I have seen some negative reviews about this hotel and all I can say is that there must be people who are so fussy and just like to moan. We couldn't fault this hotel at all and would recommend it to anyone. I certainly look forward to visiting again.

Stayed at Baobab during August. Travel from airport was easy taking no longer than 20/25 minutes.

Upon arrival was wowed by the spectacular grand entrance that fully embraced the 'African' theme throughout - the entrance was even more spectacular up until midnight daily with waterfalls and lighting.

We chose a suite and seriously were not disappointed! It was modern; contemporary and cleaned within an inch of its life! The suite comprised of :
(i) Contemporary living room with 40" flat screen TV (limited UK channels) and some impressive artwork
(ii) Dining Area with full dining room suite (great touch upon arrival at 3am were 2 mixed platters of food and wine and chocolates
(iii) Huge wardrobe storage separate from bedroom
(iv) Huge bedroom with large leather sofas, writing desk, large wall mounted flat screen tv (v) Huge bathroom area with double contemporary sinks, sunken bath and the fabulous wet room shower
(vi) Very large balcony with 2 full sun loungers and full patio set with great views over main pool area with the Maspalomas Sand Dunes and Sea very close in the background.

Only real disappointment was that you needed to get up at the crack of dawn to secure a sun lounger around any of the pools after the first two days we didn't try again. Too be honest given the size of the hotel I don't think there was anything like enough loungers. As we prefer walking as opposed to lying in the sun it didn't really bother us at all - but given many of you will probably love being around the pool thought it was an absolute must to mention. Major recommendation to hotel management would be to put in place a rule where towels will be removed after maybe 1 to 2 hours like in many other 5* hotels I have stayed at.

Can't really comment on food as only ate breakfast once and despite inclusion of evening meals chose to dine out every night.

Every public area within the hotel was extremely well kept and maintained. The kids will love discovering the life size animals hidden away in the gardens the elephants being my personal favourites!

Hotel staff were also top notch.

There's also some decent evening entertainment which is family orientated, probably for 20 30 40 something's jump in a cab for 5 euros to Playa Del Ingles if you want something livelier / wilder!

The coast / beach are literally 10 minutes walk away. There are lots of great shops; bars and restaurants located on the coast too.

I hadn't heard of MELONERAS as a resort until booking this holiday despite having been to Gran Canaria before. It is the cleanest most modern resort in Gran Canaria by a mile!

BAOBAB & MELONERAS GETS A BIG THUMBS UP! Would have rated 5 if it wasn't for the lack of sun loungers which I feel should never happen in a 5* establishment.

Our second visit to this hotel, having thoroughly enjoyed our 1 week stay there last summer.

As other reviewers say the hotel has the wow factor and although it is massive the way it is laid out doesn't make it feel that way.

There are seven pools and some do get extremely busy but there are two pools called 'relaxation pools' where you can always get a sunbed when you go down, at any time of the day. Pool areas are very clean and lovely to sit round.

The rooms are massive but if you have children with you they will seem smaller because the sofa becomes the other bed. Beds are comfortable and there is plenty of cupboard space and drawers. There is a mini bar in the fridge but you can pop your own stuff in there too and nothing is said. The bathroom has a quirky layout; the shower is very powerful and you will miss it when you get home! The hair dryer is a proper one and very effective so you can save the extra baggage and leave yours at home! There is a large television but it has very limited English television channels - just Sky News.

The food is fine with lots of choice, including simple food for children. Breakfasts are lovely. At lunchtime there is a take away restaurant and some pools are serviced by waiters who take your food order from your sunbed. There isn't a massive choice for lunch but you can grab a toastie - expensive though at 6euros each! There is a supermarket just down the road from the hotel and to the left of the hotel there are many bars where you can grab a much cheaper lunch if you can be bothered to move from your sunbed! The supermarket has cheeses, cooked meats, fruit, fresh bread, crisps, chocolate bars, etc so you can cheaply grab a snack to eat in your room. Balconies are big so picnics on them are very pleasant.

Round about there are many shops - Mango, Stradivarius, Espirit, Fund Grub, Douglas, etc. There is a local shopping centre right opposite the hotel with a selection of Spanish shops and to the left of the hotel lots of bars and other shops. If you walk through the shopping centre in front of the hotel there is a beautiful promenade with more shops, bars and restaurants. Perfume, aftershaves and beauty products are much cheaper than at home but you need to barter to get them down from the prices on the labels! The bus station is a very short walk from the hotel where you can get reliable local buses to various different places. Las Palmas, the capital, is well worth a visit if you like to shop - 2 main shopping streets in 2 different areas of the city. You can get the bus to one and then grab a taxi to the other part of the city where El Cortes is. Bus takes just over an hour each way - approx. 13,50 euros return per adult.

Another lovely holiday at the Baobab. Would highly recommend for a five star experience at a reasonable price.

We are coming to the end of a two week stay in this hotel mid August. Family of 5 with 3 children ages 3-11. We also have our in-laws with us ages 60+.

We were really looking forward to this stay especially as the reviews were so great. We had travelled through the night on a late flight and were all exhausted and couldn't wait to get to our rooms get washed and have a lay down, however to check in to the hotel we had to queue for 20 minutes at which time we were given a 15 minute talk about what happens when etc. By the time they gave us the keys to our room some 40 minutes later most of our party had collapsed on the sofa's in the reception area, this was further delayed by another quarter of an hour because one of our rooms weren't ready.

We have stayed in 5 star hotels before and can only compare this hotel to our previous experiences of hotels of these standard, which I will separate into the following aspects.

Rooms: room size was a little on the small side especially with 2 children in our room our third child, the eldest stayed in our in law's room next door. Cleanliness was ok, there were some dodgy stains on the toilet wall but apart from that it was fine. We got a couple of bubble bath bottles to begin with but these were never replaced throughout our two week stay. We had to buy our own shampoo. The shower gel in the large bottle in the bathroom was also not replenished. The walls in the room are paper thin, and we could hear every single thing going on next door and above us. One of our neighbours had an alarm that went off every single morning of our stay any time between 6am and 7am. We complained to reception every day because this was waking us all up and we didn't really want to be woken up at the crack of dawn while on holiday, however they refused point blank to do anything about it. They suggested we call them when it went off in the mornings, which we did and they still did not a thing about it. One night the baby in the room above us was suffering from a sick bug, lets just say we were up all night listening to every gory detail.

On day five of our stay we woke up to a two inch long big fat live cockroach on our wall (picture attached). It took two calls to reception for them to send anyone. They sent a tiny 3 foot tall cleaning lady with a shoe, despite the cockroach being bigger than her, she managed to squash in with a swift whack.

Facilities: We were on the first floor and my father in law has difficulty walking down stairs so having access to the lift was very important. The lift in our building worked only periodically and every other day was completely broken. We informed reception repeatedly, but the repairs were only temporary.

Poolside: The pools are lovely but the sand isn't sand at all, but shard little stones that are actually really painful underfoot. This is easily avoided by sitting by the none sandy pools. The worst part about the pools is the fact that if you want to get anyseat by the pool you have to get up between 5am and 6am!! We found a family that couldn't find a single seat for 3 whole days.

Luckily my father in law is a very early riser and was able to put towels down by 6am every morning so we always had a spot. Aside from that, the pools are lovely, not too cold and the anti clockwise perpetual current made for an interesting aspect. Lots of fun had going around and around.

Food: going half board we were allowed to eat from two restaurants which actually were just the same restaurant and food next door to each other. It is a help yourself buffet with every kind of choice to could imagine. Food was very good in my opinion, the kids all found things they liked, even the fussy ones. The fruit was particularly delicious, fresh and ripe and beautiful. Desserts were also lovely.

Entertainment: we go away every year and don't expect much entertainment wise as they are usually a bit cheesy. However the entertainment in this hotel was particularly poor. The shows were cringe worthy and after seeing a few nights we decided to avoid them all together. The live band played ancient depressing music and could have done with a bit more up-to-date up beat tunes.

Population, the people staying are all lovely, and we met some lovely friends of all ages, no football shirts or larger louts.

WIFI: Although there is free wifi in the reception area, you can pay for it for the week for €39. We had no choice but to buy it as I had a course I needed to finish and my holiday was the only time I could do it. The wifi was flaky to say the least.

All in all, although we generally had a good holiday we probably would not return again as we did not feel it was good value for money. We have stayed in 4 star hotels that had better facilities, bigger cleaner rooms and better entertainment.

Hope your experiences are better than ours.

Thanks to the uniqueness of its architecture inspired by the African continent, its impressive water landscapes with pools, rivers and waterfalls, as well as the high quality services offered, this hotel shows off ethnic charm, modernity and refinement. The hotel’s main entrance leads guests over a picturesque wooden bridge to the reception area, passing a grandiose aquatic landscape with waterfalls. From the lobby you can reach the hotel rooms or the large garden area, on a surface of 56,000 square metres, in the centre of which a large 21 metres high wooden African lodge is located; this lodge houses a restaurant and a bar. Common areas are connected by an extensive sheet of water crisscrossed by small bridges. In total there are nine swimming pools (all of them heatable at different temperatures) covering a total surface of 4,245 square metres. Specially outstanding are: the “lazy river”, two artificial beaches, pools with waterfalls and caves, the “chocolate” pool (the name of which refers to its brown colour) and the “two palm trees” pool, as well as a pool with water attractions for children and babies. The hotel’s leisure and recreation areas are enriched even more by a complete entertainment programme with a variety of activities during the day and in the evenings. Materials used for the hotel’s interior decoration and design were carefully chosen searching the appropriate item for every single corner of the hotel complex. On the walls of the hotel’s buffet restaurants guests will appreciate layers of natural coconut and wooden bricks, as well as French porcelain stoneware on the floors of the pool areas. Regarding the hotel rooms an exquisite finishing with high-quality woodwork and sound insulation was chosen. Other materials which can be found around the hotel are dry bamboo, die-cut steel or coloured mortar with added shredded straw to simulate adobe. Gastronomy The Lopesan Baobab Resort offers high quality cuisine in all restaurants, characterized by an elevated level of creativity. For this purpose the hotel’s select kitchen staff puts special emphasis on using the best products and on preparing them in presence of the hotel guests. The ‘Akara’ Restaurant is only open for dinner and its name refers to an African recipe; it offers flavours from the very heart of Africa with a menu committed to originality. The hotel’s second a la carte restaurant is the ‘Pili Pili’ Restaurant, open at lunchtime and specialised in paellas, seafood and grilled meat. Furthermore, there are two buffet restaurants, the ’Marula’ and the ‘Baobab’, the premises of which are conveniently separated to provide differentiated atmospheres where delicacies from international occidental cuisine are served. The restaurants’ wine cellar provides an excellent selection of the finest wines from around the world as a complement to the great gastronomic offer. The hotel also hosts five bars, two of them located in the pool areas; Henry Stanley bar and Mungo Park Bar complete the resort’s restaurant and bar options.
