I can assure you that if you find much wrong with this hotel, you will be in the minority. This was our 2nd time. Don't get me wrong, going back to the same hotel is a bit of a gamble. Will it live up to the standard that you experienced the first time? After all, the reason you consider going back is because you had such a good time. Our gamble certainly paid off, we were not dissappointed with anything. Myself, my wife and 10 year old son went in April and the only difference was that there were more kids my son's age for him to play with. He was off in the morning, he kept popping back to see if we were ok (which was very considerate of him), then he was off again. Activities all day. Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Darts, Water Polo, Boules. He actually made us change our lunch time from 1 o'clock to 2 o'clock so it didn't mess with his timetable. We were happy, he was happy and safe and thoroughly enjoying himself. He didn't want to come home. Our son has a nut allergy so we are always cautious about what he eats. He is really particular about what he eats aswell. We were Full Board and there was something for him at all 3 meal sittings, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The place is constantly being cleaned but not to the point where it gets on your nerves. It's spotless all the time. The rooms are cleaned every day, there's generally chocolates left at the side of your bed, which apart from making you put weight on, is a very nice touch. Absolutely First Class. We will go again, to the same hotel, we know we won't be dissappointed. By the way, Melonares is a super place to be. There is a great shopping area with restaurants that always seem to be full. The food looks great and the people look happy eating it. If you're reading this review and deciding where to book for your holiday, go to the Lopesan Baobab and leave totally satisfied with what you spent your hard earned cash on.

Room Tip: The Pool view Rooms are slightly better

I travelled with my two teen/pre-teen daughters and chose this hotel as we knew it would be safe for 3 lone females. We have previously stayed at Lopesan's nearby Villa de Conde which is also magnificent. My daughters preferred the Baobab, whereas I prefer the Conde, but only because it has a spa. Despite being in Easter school hols, the sunbeds were plentiful, and we always had a choice of pools/sunbeds. There are so many swimming pools, including a lazy river, that we did not discover the 'relaxing' pools (behind far right of hotel's rooms) until our last day. Although not strictly adhered to, the hotel has obviously tried to accommodate for all types of travellers by suggesting that some pools are for familes (noise??!!) and others are more suited to the sunbathers (book readers?!!) Fantastic location near the exclusive Meloneras shopping boulevard. Even more spruced than our last visit. We paid for half board even though we ate out half of the evenings. HB is good value and still worth paying for. Brilliant healthy food and friendly efficient service throughout the hotel. Outside Moonlight Cinema 2 min walk from hotel was great fun.

Room Tip: I emailed the hotel to ask for a room facing the road/front of hotel because I wanted afternoon sun. I also asked for a quiet room away from other families because I didn't want (as Atlantis Dubai did) to be on an obvious 'family' floor with inferior rooms and lots of crying/noisy babies. (Been there, done there, thanks). Baobab were brilliant, they emailed me back and gave us a 4th floor room with afternoon sun. Couldn't fault their service. My only niggle is WIFI is 6 Euros a day, but hey, that's just one less cocktail a day and one happy teen twitterer. AirCon was not great, and we did wake up too warm most mornings. A mainteneance guy did come out to fix it , but still not as 'fierce' as I'd come to expect from Lopesan's Villa Conde. I asked about it when checking out on last day, but I received just an apology and not an explanation. There was a queue behind me so I felt that I had to drop the questioning. Still not clear whether or not that was just our room or whether or not the hotel changes a central setting depending on the time of year. May be worth checking , as I know my husband for one could not tolerate no real air-con in August, and that could be a deciding factor for us between the two Lopesan hotels. An expensive week maybe ( £2000 including flights for 3 in one spacious room), but we only spent another 250euros on top for general spending such as poolside virgin cocktails; cinema; tshirts in Mango and water from nearby supermarket etc.

Visited the Melonares and the Lopesan Baobab 14th to 21st April with my wife and 15 year old son .Booked with Monarch and directly with the hotel online .Usual credit card required to gte rooms.Check in was smooth with welcome drink.Transfer booked with Canary forum 68 euro,s return very efficient both ways .Paid on arrival , nice cars and driver would highly recommend. When booking the hotel you are taken to a separate screen to add breakfast, half or full board .We opted for breakfast only with was 8 euros each booked in advance it is 11 euro's if you don't.Lunch buffet is 18 euro's at the hotel, the dinner buffet 31 euro's but again you get discount if you book in advance .
For us this hotel was superb , very nice rooms , outstanding grounds with 6 pools at least , 2 of which have a beach entrance area but note this is small stones not sand .Also note 2 pools are heated but don't appear to be when you first enter the water. The weather was fine about early 70's and sunny most days but got hotter on the last 2 days and swimming was more enjoyable .You get pool towels in your room and these can be changed each day down at the pool .No problems at all getting sunbeds even at 11am.If you are looking for the typical Spanish hotel , all inclusive or in an area with cheap alcohol this is not for you .This is a going on a 5 star hotel African themed and to be honest when in the hotel it has a very Mauritius feel about it .The hotel reception area's and to a degree the rooms are dark but I really didn't see this as an issue.Lovely aroma in reception.
Rooms - We had 2 standard rooms next to each other, 2 single beds made into a double quite comfy, settee that can be made into a sofa bed , nice bathroom with huge tub and nice wet room with rain shower.TV is hidden behind wooden sliding doors on the wall .It had about 70 channels but only about 4 English speaking , Sky news , BBC news , CNN, CNBC.Guests at the hotel were probably 80% German , Dutch , Scandinavian so you have to accept this .Not an issue as don't go on holiday to watch TV .Nice balcony overlooking the sister hotel which is on the sea front .View was fine .If you want a better view or even better the price goes up a lot and from what I could see not worth it .The rooms in our block 9 were on floor 2 the rooms below looked very nice and whilst the same internally they have a larger balcony with sunbeds and a private plunge pool .Expect a hefty supplement and also with the floor 4 rooms which are the family rooms and suites .We had rooms service 1st night as we arrived 9pm .Chicken caesar salad , large pizza and spag bol 2 cokes and a bottle of water .Very nice food came quickly bill 32 euros including the 5 euro room service charge .There is a mini bar in room and prices are reasonable for this class of hotel , about 2.50 euros for a soft drink but its only 2 mins walk to a supermarket to get cheaper stuff.Room safe is 2.50 euro's a day and there is wifi all over the hotel inc the rooms with a charge of 1 euro an hour , 8 euro's a day or if you book 6 days or more 6 euro's a day .The service was fine even at the pool and I need it so the charge isn't an issue if it works for me even if it is for others. You are left a card on your first day to advise the cleaner what time you wanted your room cleaned each day and this was adhered to everyday. You can also check your room charges on the tv and checkout if you want if you have left a card at reception. You can pay cash throughout the hotel or charge to your room with your room card.
Food and beverage - We had breakfast every day and it was 1st class everything you could wish for including Cava , fresh juices, cereal , cheeses , pancake's, toasted sandwiches smoked salmon , bread , usual English with eggs and omelettes made on the spot.Coffee is brought to your table but you can also go to an area to get other coffees like expresso and teas.It was served from 7 to 11am .There are several bars around the complex with pool service and 3 indoor bars for the evening .Prices 3.70 euro's for a beer cocktails 6 euro's.There is an outdoor entertainment area not used when we were there given time of year and the large indoor area where there is an internet area , tv's and stage where tribute acts in the main perform .We saw a couple of them but not our scene. There are two main buffet restaurants , one for the half and full board guests with 2 sittings and another with open sitting .We heard the food was excellent but didn't eat there. There is a strict dress code in the evening with long trousers and closed shoes for every gent over 8 years of age !There are 2 a la carte ones the Pilly Pilly between 12 and 6 pm near the river pool which seemed reasonably priced and an African themed restaurant with very few tables but looked nice .Limited menu with just 4 or 5 starters and same main courses. We didn't eat at either. In line with the hotel theme there are numerous fake animals dotted around the grounds which makes it a fun place particularly for kids .The kids clubs seemed well organised and the entertainment team generally seemed to work very hard .There is a programme you can pick up in reception which tells you everything that is going on throughout the week .
The Area - You walk down from the hotel where there is an area with 4 or 5 bars a few shops and restaurants. .Ate at the Italian which was fairly average. You then walk across the road past the sister hotel and casino and walk through the Varadero shopping centre which has numerous shops , some designer some not.Beware though the prices unless you pick up a discount are in line with the Selfidges of this world if not more. You come out of the other side of the shops onto the prom and sea front .Walk left past various designer shops and you reach a strip of 5 or 6 restaurants then to the lighthouse .Turn right and its about 15 mins walk to Playa Melonares where there are a handful of restaurants but it was dead when we went.On the strip we ate at Grand Italia( very nice ), Grand Faro( Average) and 18th hole ( average) We also has drinks and watched the entertainment at a couple of the bars.We also had lunch one day at a nice place turning right just after the shopping centre but cant remember its name .Now for the hidden gem !!! When you leave the shopping centre in the evening and meet the prom you will be met with a couple of gents trying to get you to go into the restaurants on the top floor of the centre,We looked up and didn't really fancy it.The one on the left is a seafood place and the one on the right an Argentinian grill. The first few nights we had been a bit disappointed with the food so on the 5th night decided to give the Argentinian place a go .When we entered it was a surprise very nice place and as it turned out fabulous food.We have eaten at many Argentinian and other steakhouse's but this was the best ever! Starters Chicken wings and Gazpacho , main course of Lamb chops and chateubriand for 2 , beer ,2 cokes, 1 litre of Sangria Amaretto coffee , iced chocolate and 3 free cocktails when we paid the bill .84 euro's .The chateaubriand was superb and a huge piece of meet perfectly cooked to our liking .We went again our last night massive mix grill yummy fillet steak and great service .There are lots for everyone on the menu including a fondu , a hot stone grill and flambes not just meat great fish to .Name is La Pampa make sure you visit ! Its about 20% cheaper than the front line restaurants but much better food .
We didn't venture far the sand dunes of Playa del Ingles are about 20 minutes away as is the resort which is about 5 euro's in a taxi .Prices are cheaper and it is a more typical Spanish resort .Melonares is newish the hotel is 3 years old and it is what it is an upmarket resort in an upmarket area .I cannot understand people who seem to think it is unfair for the Spanish to charge the same prices as the uk and want beer for 1 euro.If you do go to Benidorm not here but as the Spanish like the Greeks get in the real world and realise you have to tax to pay for things prices are going to rise .We loved the Lopesan and it was a pleasant break as I said it is not an all inclusive resort doesn't pretend to be but offers a first class holiday destination with fair prices for a 5 star resort . We will return !!

Room Tip: Standard rooms are fine but big supplements for pool or garden views or for the suites and private pool rooms

We've just returned from a fabulous 10 days at the Baobab with our 2 kids (aged 6 & 4) and it really is a fantastic family hotel. The hotel is beautifully laid out and really does look as good in reality as the many photos you see of it. We found it to be really well maintained and very clean.

We had a standard room and our daughters shared the pull out sofa bed which we kept up for our whole stay. We had plenty of room and storage space and were very happy with our room choice. The kids found the sofa bed very comfy (though I would question whether studier teenagers would be quite as comfortable on it as it seemed a little hard to me!) and we all slept really well. Our room overlooked the shopping centre & road so there was some traffic noise on the balcony, but we couldn't hear anything once the balcony door was closed. Unlike some other reviewers we didn't really notice any noise disturbance in the rooms either - there were a handful of occasions that I was aware of someone walking down the corridor and I think I heard a baby cry once but that was it! For such a large hotel it really did seem remarkably quiet and we've certainly stayed in noisier places. We did have to pay extra for the safe (€2.50 per day) and I agree it would be a nice touch if this was included but I was aware that it was an extra when I booked and having had a previous bad experience with stuff going missing from Spanish hotel rooms I was happy to pay it. My only tip for the hotel if they wanted to turn a great room into an outstanding one would be to subscribe to an English speaking kids channel for the TV as we could only get news - Cbeebies would have been the icing on the cake!

We were on a full board package and ate in both the buffet restaurants. The selection of food available was great and the fact that there was always meat/fish/eggs cooked in front of you was a really nice touch. They also do a slightly different 'theme' for dinner each evening, Spanish, Italian, African, Oriental which helped keep things fresh though the usual staples were still there for those that wanted them. There was plenty of choice for the kids too from plain grilled chicken/fish through to the usual nuggets & chips and spag bol. We found all the staff to be very friendly and welcoming, but occasionally the service was a bit mixed - we found we sometimes had to ask for drinks a couple of times before they came, or the waiter would bring the wine but not open it! Minor niggles really and all were swiftly sorted with a smile when we pointed them out. We did find after a while that the meals lacked a bit of variety, but I guess that's the downside of a full board package, there aren't many restaurants in the world I'd want to eat 30 meals in a row in! However, we did find on the couple of occasions that we ate out, the hotel food and service compared quite favourable to some of the other restaurants in the area!

The pool areas are out of this world! We managed to try every pool but our favourite was the round pool outside the African restaurant. Three of the pools were heated during our stay which was great for the kids as early in the season the water can be a bit cool. The others were all perfectly fine once you were in but did take your breath away at first. The kids also really enjoyed the beach areas of the pools (though it's actually fine shingle rather than sand) but they could still dig with their buckets & spades. The kids pool was great but did get quite busy. All the pools were clean and well maintained with plenty of sun loungers and facilities like toilets & showers close by. The hotel do ask clients not to reserve sun loungers and we found this was normally adhered to so there was no mad rush to get the best spot before breakfast. We only had one occasion in 10 days when we couldn't get 4 loungers next to our first choice of pool, but we had left it till about 11.30am before getting there. Most days we had the pick of where we wanted to be. The hotel provides pool towels and carry bags which can be exchanged for clean ones as often as you like which is a nice touch.

Our kids loved the entertainment programme with the mini disco being an absolute highlight for them. It definitely fell into the cheesy Europop category but they loved it and our 4 year old took an instant shine to 'Panchi' the resident dolphin character that appears for a nightly conga. They also took part in some of the activities laid on by the kids club (mask making, face painting etc) which they enjoyed, but we didn't leave them in the club unattended. To be honest, we just didn't feel the need, the hotel is so well thought out for families that it made having the kids around so easy that we just didn't want to offload them! The adult entertainment was a little more mixed, the flamenco act were great but some of the other cabaret acts were a little amateurish. For those that like their sport, the key games and events were shown which kept my hubby happy!

I really can't recommend this hotel highly enough for a family holiday, we loved our time here and were really impressed with both the hotel and what we've seen of the Lopesan chain, they really do seem to be an organisation committed to high standards and good service. I'm sure it won't be the last time we visit.

We have just returned from a week' s stay in a Junior Suite (2 adults and 2 children aged 8&10)at this fantastic hotel! Check in was very friendly and efficient (gracias Eva) after a walk through the very impressive reception are with it's animal noises which the children loved! Our Junior suite on the 3rd floor had a magnificent view over the whole lower pool area and gardens with the famous dunes in the distance. The suite was spotlessly cleaned every day and the air con was the quietest we've come across yet. Fittings were first class and lighting was aplenty all around the suite. Lovely dressing gowns and towels changed as often as required. Chocolates on pillow a nice touch in evening.
The hotel is amazing! Attention to detail is everywhere From the life size animals to the speakers hidden in rocks in the immaculate gardens. But nothing was tacky and all enhanced the unusual African theme. Staff were all superb and all greeted you with a buenas Dias when passing you in the corridors. The same in the restaurant where nothing was too much trouble- fresh meats and fish cooked to your liking and drinks brought to your table with a smile almost immediately after they were ordered. The food in the buffet restaurant was quite simply superb. So much choice and all courses varied each night so I have no idea how anyone could find the evening buffet repetitive! Breakfast was more predictable but again so much choice of fruits, continental or cooked breakfasts and eggs and omelettes cooked to order. We sat outside for every meal which was really pleasant ( a pity that the hotel doesn't adopt a non smoking policy for all eating areas as some customers think nothing of blowing smoke over children eating at an adjacent table!)
We tried almost all pools and yes some are very cold but with children you just jump in with them! Our favourite was the heated pool near the Akara restaurant. Gr8 that pool towels provided and can be exchanged every day if required.
The surrounding area was very pleasant and we regularly walked (5 mins) down to the lighthouse and along the promenade in the evening. Timeshare touts were a bit of a pain but we found that speaking to them in Welsh left them silent as they had no answer for us!
Thomson/first choice staff pleasant but be aware that the PLatinum 30 min guaranteed 1st/2nd drop off does not apply to the return journey (over 1 hour via Playa d'Ingles) with loud untuned radio on bus!
A wonderful stay at the Baobab thanks to a well designed resort and great staff. We hope to return!
