We booked this when the reviews were all good apart from peoples personal choice, but as the time came to travel there were a few bad reviews which I am happy to say we were not able to agree with.
We arrived after midnight and were put in a first floor room, this was easily changed to a third floor by ringing reception. Unfortunately, this room had just had new sealant on the bathroom, but we changed to next door easily enough immediately, all with friendly service.
We paid extra for the safe, which we have never had to do in a 5 star hotel, but it wasn't too excessive, and paid for broadband which I would expect.
All meals were great choice of well prepared food, even the vegetables were not stewed as I expected- yes the buffet did get samey but all buffets do, I love Chinese food but if I ate it all week I would find that samey too!
All staff, including cleaners and gardeners, smiled and said hello, everywhere was clean and tidy and the pools were great, especially the lazy river.
The hotel was not full and it may have been different if it was, but there were lots of spare loungers throughout the day.
The room was of good quality, plenty of plug sockets, free fridge and nice bathroom. It could have benefited from a full length mirror, but there were plenty of hangers and wardrobe space. We didn't find anywhere within the hotel too dark as others have.
We were full board but this did not include any drinks (except breakfast) prices were a bit sneaky ie. 2.50 euros for a coke which was only 200mls rather than standard size of 330mls, other drinks were ok. We ate out a few times, can recommend Grand Italia where we ate twice, huge pizza first time but we saw the steaks on other tables and tried it next time, one of the best steaks!
There are a couple of supermarkets and other shops nearby, we bought drinks from there for our balcony of an evening, but there are a lot of lovely public areas to sit (away from the dodgy "entertainment" area).
We were going to hire a car to have a look about but just did the Island tour with Thomson. It was a bit pricy at 60 euros each but the roads were so narrow in a lot of places, even if we survived the drive we wouldn't have been able to see as much.
We are quite fussy and have stayed at a lot of nice places, and can honestly say all the criticism of this place is unfounded in my opinion, the African theme does work and the animals are quite subtle and not at all Disney like.
Would happily go back again.

I would say to start 5 star rating in uk is not the same as Spain eg, Gleneagles or other like hotels. We stayed at the Costa Melonares hotel a few years ago and saw the Baobab being built and thought we would like to try it, we were not disappolnted . Very different but had a WOW factor, check in was simple, we had asked for high floor when booking with First Choice but were told their rooms were on the first floor, i said we had requested a high floor, girl at reception said one moment came back and changed us to a 3rd floor at no extra cost, this was perfect, bags arrived as we got there. Room was large with good air conditioning, wet room with large bath, a covered and open balcony which got evening sun. The hotel is large and some people would have had a long walk at meal times, dining room was well spaced out with a great buffet, one would have to be a very fussy eater not to find something suitable, the full choice would be take up a lot of space but some of the offerings were Zebra stakes, Ostrich, Salmon, Sea Bass, even a chocolate fountain with large bowels of Strawberries. Spoilt for choice. All the staff were very good and went about their duties with a smile, it was also good to see the dress code at dinner enforced. One thing could be clearer names on the food.

Was amazing holiday, the hotel is sooooo nice. Me and my boyfriend both in our mid 20's loved it. When we first turned up it was at night time and looked amazing, it was all lit up. The whole hotel is very modern and has a african theme, it is huge with 8 swimming pools. There is loads of sun loungers so never had to get up early to get one before the germans got them all as all days there ways always lots spare. All there staff speak good english and was very helpful.
In the room we had a huge bathroom/wetroom with a massize shower and a bath that can easily fit 2 people in. would highly recommend.

We stayed at this hotel between 23rd April and 7th May. The hotel was full when we arrived but by the second week it was nearly empty. On arrival we were given a 1st floor room, extremely dark and depressing despite asking at reception for an airy room with good views. Views from the room were the wooden fence and a path on the back of the hotel. We saw the hotel was quite full so no point in complaining and we kept the room for the first week. Also in the room from day one the rug under the kids sofa bed had a massive wet, sticky stain, that I immediately complained about to reception. They sent a man after a few hours that said the cleaners would sort it soon. Returning to the room later in the day the stain was still there, so called reception which said they would look into it. This repeated itself 3 more times and nothing was done about it. Disgusting rugs are not acceptable, particularly in a so called 5* hotel, not a hostel in Thailand.
After the first week and fed up with the room we started getting calls early in the morning from prankster kids somewhere in the hotel. Called reception again and they said they could cut incoming calls to my room if I wanted, to which I replied just get us a higher nicer room please as we have another week to stay here. They agreed and we were moved to a 3rd floor room with very nice views of the mountains, and one of the pools. Also the condition of the room and decoration were totally different. We now know we were in a very poor room for the first week and the rooms vary a lot. Also for the whole first week the service was very different in the room as from the time we moved to the more looked after room on the 3rd floor we started getting a cleaner coming around in the evening to check if we needed more towels, open the beds and distribute chocolates. My question is why are two different levels of service in the hotel? For the same type of room?????
We also noticed (knowing fluent Spanish) that there are two or three different levels of service depending on nationality. If you are Spanish or Italian you will get the best rooms in the best buildings with the best views. Also the staff goes to great extent to keep you happy no matter how rude and obnoxious you are. Then the Germans are in the ok service category and effort is still done to please. Finally if you are British or "others" you will get the rubbish rooms over tired from use, and the not to bother to please service.
That's why many complain that the hotel is not a 5*. It is a multi star hotel with 3, 4, and 5* service, but depending on where you come from.
The pools are great (apart from the "sandy" parts) and our two kids had a great time in them. Sunbeds were more than enough for the number of people in the hotel at the time, but I can see how it can get crowded in high season. The water temperature was also a bonus as all pools we tried you could jump in quite easily, nice and warm. Kids would jump in without thinking so warm it was.
Food was ok to good 1/3 of the days we stayed there, but as the only decent things were the grill and salads it can get repetitive.
There were plenty of vegetables but the poor things were murdered by the chefs. We quite like vegetables and eat them daily back home, but even with our love for them most of the ones there were overcooked, mushy and cooked in totally unnecessary spices that made them inedible.
Sweets were also quite poor so fresh fruit was the option most days, but the variety was also non existent and you will get tired of eating the same fruit breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Entertainment was very poor to non-existent.
The grounds, pool areas and arquitecture of the hotel were splendid. Really nice to walk around the grounds and constant maintenance was done on the grounds.
Gym was simple but had enough for a good routine around weights exercises and some cardio.
It is a beautiful hotel with fantastic features but the service is inconsistent so you never know what to expect next.
Although we had a wonderful family holiday we wouldn't recommend this hotel as we feel there is a lot of room for service improvement.

I cannot agree with any of the negative reviews on here. Spent 12 nights here full board just after Easter with my wife and children aged 1 and 3. We just loved the placed and had a great relaxed time. Hotel was spotless and all staff very helpful.

The buffet was extensive at all meal times and the pools were all warm enough to spend long periods of time swimming.

If you are thinking of booking this hotel, go for it !
