Never hear of the Emerald, found it by chance, and were simply charmed by every aspect of this little tucked away restaurant located on a hill with the most stunning view over the mediterranean I have seen for a while. The menu is small, but divine. We tried their tasting menu, which includes 6 courses and 6 wines which are matched with the dishes. Mouth wateringly good. I love my food and I found my self in flovour heaven. Such a shame we have to leave. The couple who run this restaurant only open in the summer, work in the swiss alps for the winter, taking care of a chalet in Zermatt(www.mountainexposure.com) I will go and find them this winter, simply to treat my tast buds, while I wait for the summer to return. We will be back next year and stay in the Emerald hotel so we can taste the rest. If you are in the region(Chania, Kalives,Almyrida even Rethimno) I strongly recommend you make the small effort to find this Gewl

This is an excellent restaurant to visit for a taste experience that singles them out from other taverna/restaurants in the area. The menu is clearly researched and influenced by the culinary history of Stella and Christos. Their history and passion for new taste experiences brings a freshness to the traditional cuisine of the area and is a joy to sample. I particularly enjoyed the deconstructed Boureki, vine leaf sushi rolls and scallops with garlic and chilli local mushrooms. There were so many beautiful dishes to choose from it was genuinely hard to decide! They are adventurous in style without compromising on traditional taste and their experience......everything was perfectly balanced. The welcome and atmosphere is warm and friendly with a genuine interest in opinions of the food. The wine list is representative of the quality of the local area and Greece. I would highly recommend seeking this jewel of a restaurant out...it is one not to be missed!

Emerald Restaurant opened in 2013 and has made fans of everyone I know who has eaten there. The owners, Christos and Stella, worked for several years in Switzerland with the celebrity chef, Nobu Matsuhisa, and they have brought their experience with Japanese cuisine back to their home on Crete. Here you will find sushi rolls, but wrapped in grape leaves rather than seaweed. Other dishes on their menu, which changes depending upon the freshest fish and vegetables available at local markets, reflect their international perspective on food. Christos does most of the cooking, while Stella is the sommelier and runs the front of the restaurant. Both speak excellent English and are charming hosts. When you go, be sure to call ahead and reserve a table on the edge of the patio, which offers a breathtaking view of Almirida Bay. Sip some of the excellent wine and watch the sun set over the Mediterranean. It doesn't get better than this!

A friend turned us onto the Emerald and we could not be more grateful that he did. The Emerald represents all that is great in the new generation of culinary Greek connoisseurs.

For starters, the head chef Christos has put together a fun tasty menu that is both well balanced and creative, while still reflecting a basis in Greek techniques and fresh local ingredients. The result is nothing short of phenomenal and we regretted that we only had room for a light lunch.

In addition, his wife Stella is both utterly charming and an incredibly knowledgeable wine connoisseur, particularly when it comes to some of the Cretan varieties that are just now becoming popular.

In the end, we sat back, took in the wonderful views of Souda Bay, and enjoyed an amazing afternoon eating and drinking in the shade. The Emerald remains by far one of the most memorable experiences during our time in western Crete and I would strongly urge anyone in the area to check out this amazing place!

This is a sparkling jewel of a restaurant. It's small and intimate, has a wonderful view of the water, and has amazing food and service. The food on Crete is generally excellent, but after a while, you find you are eating the same things over and over. This restaurant is adventurous without ruining the idea of Cretan food. The owners add some unusual ingredients to traditional dishes or mix Greek with other cultures to produce unusual dishes, and the results are always amazing. We spend six weeks in western Crete every summer, and this is our new favorite restaurant.
