We have just come back from a stay at The Old Rectory. We booked one of the suites which was extremely clean, polished and luxurious. Our room (room 25) included a massive 2 person Jacuzzi, huge flat screen TV, 2 sofas and a very comfortable bed. The main part of the hotel is fully of nooks and crannies an has the bags of character that you would expect from such a historic building. Prices for our food and drink were very honest and exactly what we were expecting, however we were not expecting the incredible level of service that was delivered in a genuine and consistent manner throughout our stay.

Very hard to beat this hotel for overall value. Supposed to be a 3 star (I would give it 5 start for the luxurious room and fantastic service).

Where do I start - what a fantastic hotel, the location, the staff, the food.
We travelled from Ludlow, we are great foodies and walkers and the Old Rectory has to be one of the best in the area if you love good food and walking.
From the minute we arrived Shaun & his team were helpful, full of local knowledge and very friendly. We had booked to stay in a standard double but were given an upgrade to a deluxe double as they were just finishing off refurbishing a couple of rooms. Wow - we were really impressed with the decor, views and what a comfy bed!
We spent saturday exploring the caves, we were able to set off from the hotel after a hearty full welsh breakfast. In the evening the bar had a gentle buzz about it, and we enjoyed a superb meal in the restaurant my fish was cooked to perfection and full of flavour. The atmosphere was friendly and we soon got chatting to locals and staff, which resulted in my partner joining in for a game of golf sunday morning.
What else can I say a real Gem!
We plan to go back again in the summer for another great weekend.

The website does a good job selling this Hotel with wonderful pictures of the building and modern looking rooms. But on arrival, I have to admit we were a little disappointed as it all looked a bit tired and haphazard. A huge and full skip in the car park, large empty cardboard boxes in the lobby, old coffee cups lying around, plaster board propped up against a wall in a main corridor, holes in walls stuffed with paper and painted over, and just a general feeling of being 'past its best'. Our bedroom door had a poorly fitted lock on it (essentially the door didn't lock at all) and the ensuite was very dated with a yellow light pull string and decaying sealant around the sink. The room itself seemed to have been updated, though some of the furniture was a little old.

BUT from the time we arrived the staff couldn't have been more helpful - very friendly and our door lock was mended by the time we came back from a lovely walk across the hills at the back. We later discovered that the place had just been taken over some 18 months ago and work was underway to make improvements (current modernisation did not affect our stay as it was a weekend). Somehow the place grew on us. The breakfast was great and our bed very comfortable. The hotel's proxmity to Crickhowell was brilliant - not in the town, but just a short walk across the churchyard through a field (with small tarmac path) and over a lovely old bridge.

Would we stay there again? Probably not for us. Would we recommend it - maybe...if you're not looking for a modern retreat. Guess it will improve overtime though, and it was fairly good value at £75 per room for night we stayed. One to watch.

In common with most hotels January /February is our quietest time of year so we do pack our refurbishments in then. I am pleased to report that this work is now complete - we have 5 new suites on our top floor and the skip has gone from the car park!

I am glad that you enjoyed your visit overall and would recommend another visit - perhaps try one of the new rooms next time?

We stayed in adjoining rooms - double for us, twins for the kids. The setup was cosy and suited us well. One of the rooms was VERY cosy - would have been a bit too tight if we didn't have the other room too.

The rooms, particularly the bathroom were well done - new and to a high standard - although no bath, just shower.

Our main gripe is that the lounge and bar lacked atmosphere - it was very quiet during our stay. Also according to my husband, the beer served was too gassy and cold.

All in all though, we had a good time and would consider returning.

A large group of us stayed on a biking & walking weekend and had a fantastic stay. This is a really nice hotel at the very top end of 3 star. The manager (shaun) was full of good advice and really looked after us. Perhaps the best thing we can say is that we are staying again next year.
