Our family of four stayed 3 nights on Kestrel at the start of August this year. From the moment we booked, we knew we were in for a treat. All information and confirmations were sent by post including an instructional DVD before we arrived so we had plenty of time to see what we were letting ourselves in for. I must say, we were all a little nervous as to whether we would manage to drive this boat and operate all the locks, swing bridges etc. Suggested itineraries were included and I decided that we would do the super-busy itinerary with lots of boating and lots of locks! On arrival, we were greeted with hot drinks and cookies and allowed to board our boat and familiarise ourselves / unpack, before full instructions were given and we set off after half an hour or so. The boat itself was beautiful.....luxurious from bedding to towels and toiletries, together with lovely touches like fresh cut flowers in vases. We were all very comfortable and the kitchen was supplied with everything you might need. The Mon and Brec canal is amazing......miles of unspoilt countryside dotted with cottages and pubs.......there were other boats but as this is a closed canal, not that many. We chose to go up to Brecon and back again, giving us the full adventure of locks etc which we (and moreover the kids, 13 and 15) soon got the hang of. My only gripe if I had one actually turned out to be a blessing. The boats all have Wi-Fi but as they said when we arrived, the Wi-Fi is only as good as the mobile signal, which is pretty much non-existent. Kids were stressed out by this for all of about an hour and then turned their phones off and actually relaxed. Family fun....sing-a-longs, board games, even just talking! It was proper family time. Oh, and a word of warning.........having told the kids all weekend to be careful when traversing the length of the boat, a certain middle aged dad actually ended up falling in much to the amusement of the wife and kids........and I can confirm, the canal is only about 1m deep! Will definitely visit again......a weekend to remember for the rest of our lives. Well done Beacon Park Boats. x
Had a great week on the Grouse, one of the Brecon Park Boats. Fantastic service leading up to our holiday with lots of guidance and helpful advice.
What an incredible week my wife and I have just returned from! Every aspect of our holiday was of the highest quality. Harrier - the pick of Beacon Park Boats' fleet - was outstanding and drew many envious looks the entire length of the canal. She is THE boat to choose for a couple - the bath was sublime and, even on a late summer's evening, nothing beats lighting the wood burning stove and seeing smoke waft gently through the shafts of sunlight filtering between the trees. The bed was more comfortable than most luxury hotels and the boat itself was an absolute joy to steer. The purist in me was silenced the moment I used the bow thrusters - a fantastic addition that makes even the trickiest of corners, lock positioning or mooring the easiest thing in the world. The six locks as well as aqueducts, tunnels, lifting bridges and small marinas made for a varied cruising experience, all the time hugging the side of the deeply wooded valleys with magnificent views over towns and mountains beyond. I envy all those who have yet to experience the charms of the Mon and Brec, particularly on board the one of these beautifully designed boats built by people who really know their stuff. Book one immediately and look forward to enjoying what will be one of the finest holidays you will ever have. I promise.
What a delight to travel on the Brecon Beacon Boats in Wales in June this year on a trip to see family in the UK. We had a week on the Owl canal boat and only later found it was the 'honeymoon boat' but we didn't mind. It had a 4 poster bed, pot belly stove and a fantastic hot tub in the front of the boat. We were impressed with everything in the boat and the attention to detail, anything you could have wanted for a week trip was there. It was very comfortable and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in a quiet scenically beautiful canal with lots of fun learning to open locks, bridges and a tunnel as well balanced with slow travel and lots of relaxing! A very professional outfit all round with great training sessions and videos to help the less confident sailors!
We have had a great family week travelling on the unspoilt Brecon canal at a wonderfully relaxing pace. As there were 6 of us we opted for one of the broader barges which offer more living/sleeping space (Puffin). There were no problems at all navigating the canal. The front bow thrusters make steering easy. There is only one substantive set of locks (a run of 5) but local volunteers were on hand to give guidance and we went through all of them in approximately 2.5 hours. There are plenty of canal side restaurants/pubs if you prefer to eat out. The boat itself is equipped to a very high standard. The Beacon Park Boats operation is very slick and professional. Would recommend to anyone. We take holidays seriously in our house and this is one of the best we have ever had.
Picked up our boat "Hobby" for a weeks holiday. Had a leisurely week travelling to Brecon and back with our two dogs. The canal is very dog friendly, loads of pubs very welcoming of pets, so no trouble finding somewhere to eat out. However the kitchen on-board the boat is fab and well kitted out, so we fended for ourselves a few nights. We have used Beacon Park Boats for quite a few years now and are never disappointed. We will be back again next year!
A first time canal boat holiday (children 11&12). They'd always wanted to sleep on a boat and thought it would be very exciting. I was a little apprehensive that they and we would be bored as we are an active family. I needn't have worried! I think partly to the size of our boat, it was huge, and we had to manoeuvre it between the many bridges, locks, an aqueduct and a long dark tunnel not to mention the other narrow boats mooring on the canal and filling up our water each day, it was a joint operation! This added to the working together feel of the holiday. Runs along the canal are also easy as are plenty of dog walks. The canal is narrow in places and shallow so the odd 'getting stuck in the mud' happens but you have your poles and bow thrusters to get you out of trouble. We found plenty of pubs and a few shops/cafes along the way and if you refer to your information provided you can plan your journey and stops. The children were tired after all of the fresh air and exercise so we ate on the boat 2 out of 4 evenings. The kitchen is great with a full size oven, microwave, grill and fridge with a small freezer compartment so no need to go out if you don't feel the need. We also found BBQ spots along the way too.
Although WiFi is included the signal and that of the TV is poor. Take DVD's and family games for entertainment.
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the boat in general, 2 bathrooms with good showers, fittings and 2 fixed double beds and linen. Looking at other boats on the canal we were pleased that we had booked with Beacon Park Boats. The staff were helpful and friendly and were genuinely interested to ensure that you had a great time.
A great experience for the family, it's one off the list and we wouldn't hesitate in recommending Beacon Park Boats.
Tips - if you want to navigate the bridges with ease, pick a smaller boat than we did it will be more relaxing but if you want the kids to be involved Puffing is great.
Stock up on supplies from Waitrose about 10 minutes away from the wharf.
If you want to explore the area then you will need a week on the boat as 4 night just wasn't long enough to get out and about.
Pick a boat with bow thrusters they can get you out of sticky situations!
