“A lovely, well presented cottage in a great location”

Set next to a reservoir and canal, complete with lock gates, the cottage is a 10-15 minute walk along the tow path from Marsden but feels quite rural. There is a small, enclosed yard at the front, useful for letting the dog out in the morning. The walking from the door is fab so, once arrived, we didn't bother with the car again until we left. There's also a brilliant pub, The Rose and Crown, on Cop Hill to the north that is well worth the steep 25 minute walk, or is a 5 minute drive. The cottage was lovely and warm when we arrived and the heating was easy to control when the warmth needed a little boost. There's also a log burner with enough logs etc for at least one lighting. The kitchen is pleasant and very well equipped. The double bed is very hard so bring a spare duvet as a mattress topper if you have achy bones. All in all a lovely place in a great area - recommended!

“AWE INSPIRING”

I rented this property with my parents when they came up for a visit from America. I have to say it was the most amazing experience ever. The house and surrounding area is nothing short of amazing. It was a trip I wanted remembered since it had been so long since I had seen my parents. The water and views are breathtaking. The village nearby is just as great. With wonderful places to eat and just have a drink. There are little shop and a co-operative store as well. The walking and exploring is open for both teens and adults. You can make an adventure and a romantic experience in the same day. I have to say that renting this place was the best thing I have ever done. My parents have already said they are coming back in July 2018 and they do not want to stay anywhere else. Thank you for sharing this gift with us. Also to note I gave my parents the main bedroom. and I stayed in the bunk beds. I am 32 and 6 foot 1 inches tall and it was a comfortable experience. I know I will be booking again before July.

“Excellent well appointed home from home.”
Reviewed March 19, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

Excellent attention to detail in this beautiful homely cottage, nothing was overlooked with something for everybody inside and outside, The situation at the side of the lake was peaceful and a good base for walking whichever way you set off, and with 2 villages within easy walking distance. The dogs were in heaven.

“Snowy weekend break”
Reviewed March 11, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

Booked this cottage in March to avoid the worst of the winter weather. Arrived by train in deep snow, which simply enhanced the beauty of this part of the Colne Valley. Sparth Cottage is wonderfully situated with glorious views across the reservoir and canal to the hills opposite. Aside from being a lovely, well-heated cozy cottage, we really appreciated the little touches like quality ground coffee, a bottle of milk, cookie biscuits, high quality hand-wash, shower gel etc.
There are beautiful walks along the canal in either direction. We loved to pork pies and coffee shops in Slawit and the Riverhead Brewery Tap (superb restaurant) and New Inn in Marsden. Had an interesting circular walk taking in the Pennine Way - the snow had largely melted in Marsden by then but was over 18 inches deep in some places high up. Standedge Tunnel visitor centre (free) is well worth a visit to learn about the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in the UK.
Overall, Sparth Cottage is a great base for a relaxing break with endless quality walks from the Cottage.

“A very comfortable and cosy cottage”
Reviewed January 14, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

My husband and I stayed in this lovely cottage with our two dogs for a week. It is very well equipped and whilst we were there the weather was awful, rain, gales and very cold so it was lovely to come back at the end of the day and light the fire, very cosy. It is ideally situated very close to the canal for a walk into Marsden, walking boots were required because the towpath was muddy in places because of all the rain. We would definitely stay in Sparth cottage again.
