“gem by the barrow”
Reviewed September 12, 2013 via mobile

Staying close to Inistoige we decided on a small tour of the area and St Mullins came on our radar as a pleasant place to stop. Driving into the village you see that it is really attractive and following the signs down past the motte and bailey to the Mullichain cafe we thought we might be on to a winner. Sitting literally on the banks of the river the old grain store now houses the cafe and some self catering accomodation. There is a simple enough menu and as we were arriving later in the afternoon we only ordered a sandwich and some pate with toast. Absolutely fresh and delicious. The pate was home made and beautiful, smooth and with great taste. It was accompanied by a really fresh and tasty salad. You got a sense that, on observing the other dishes being served, that all the food would be good. It is a cosy place with inside and bank side seating. There is loads of touring information available and really freindly chat from the owner. Overall it is a place to go back to and enjoy the river paths before rewarding yourself with a stop here.

“I canoed 68 kilometres to visit and it was worth it”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

Arriving for a late lunch in a large group of 17 canoeists we were made most welcome and had our orders fulfilled nearly all at once. The soup and wheaten bread are of an extremely high quality. The setting of this converted barn is like something out of a Hollywood Movie interpretation of Ireland.

“the reason for four stars is location. beautiful, not that easy to locate but seriously worth the effort.”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

On a fine day the view is idyllic, overlooking the river Barrow close to its tidal limits, the river walk is the best I've found in Ireland along a well maintained towpath, but before the walk food and coffee, had anti-pasta, which was a combo of meats and cheese plus. At €9 was a little pricey, could have done with some other bread as a filler. staff were delightful. but what made the visit memorable was the setting. has to be seen to be believed. area has huge history, though nowadays past glories have left ruins of grandeur and dilapidated flower mills.though in truth they add to the view. Graiguenamanagh is a walk of 7Km. along the tow paths. a number of cuttings and locks all well maintained add to the view. Graiguenamanagh itself is well worth a visit.
delighted with our visit. will return.

“Set in a beautiful part of the country...”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

The hole area of St Mullins is just so beautiful. After a walk around the ecclesiastic and monastic sites, through the parks, passed the moat and into he valley like surroundings of the Mullichain cafe this is well worth a day trip or over night stay. You will not be disappointed... well, maybe due to the fact you don't live there : (

We really enjoyed the accommodation and the setting as well as our complimentary bottle of wine on check in. The cafe had beautiful homemade food and the scenery along the river was so peaceful and so beautiful. Martin and Emer were very welcoming and pleasant and this spot is well worth a visit!
