“Lunch stop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2014

Had a day out in the Dales mainly to see how the area was gearing up for the T.de F. found this lovely spot for lunch in a beautiful little village.

Sat outside and enjoyed a very generous well cooked lunch. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

After carrying out a reccy of the area for Tour De France we stopped off for a pint and some much needed food. Fountaines Inn is an absolute gem! Beautifully located within a quaint village in the heart of the Yorkshire dales, situated over looking the local stream with some superb scenery and building surrounding it. The food was delicious, came in large portions and in good time The service was polite and friendly with the young girls working hard and making good conversation. Great value for money and would look forward to returning.

We've been coming here for years & have recommended it to many. We were sooooo disappointed when we went this Saturday though. The food was, as always, great but the service was awful! Three young members of staff, not a problem in itself but clearly either badly trained, inexperienced or both. Two of them lovely enough but the third definitely not a people person. She gave no eye contact or smile & almost dumped pudding on the table as she was too busy, actually, the restaurant wasn't that busy so not sure what her problem was. All three spent most of their time nattering in a huddle behind the desk so it was nearly impossible to get their attention. My poor mum- in -law (84) resorted to waving her hands in the air several times to try to get some attention. Didn't work though, the only real attention we did get was from the pleasant enough young waiter who tried to clear the table twice, while we were still eating.
Heard two women in loos complaining about the same things so clearly it was just us. On a side note loos looked really scruffy, need repainting & no cover on light & full of cobwebs. Such a shame, was going to book two weekend breaks but think I'll go elsewhere.
Overall not a pleasant experience for a birthday celebration & a complete waste of money.

Further to our meal a few days ago, my sister and I decided there was nowhere better for our last night of our holiday meal. We had been walking at Malham for most of the day, so pushed the boat out and opted for starters as well as a main! The Catalan prawns were delicious and I had plenty of rustic bread to soak up the scrummy sauce. My sister opted for Thai fishcakes and enjoyed them, but said they could probably have benefited from some more fish. Our mains were the beef and mushroom stroganoff and the veggie Wensleydale cheese, potato and onion pie, both of which went down an absolute treat! We were able to eat outside which was an added bonus after a hot days walking. The staff are all very helpful and friendly and I can't wait for my next visit to the Dales so I will be able to visit The Fountaine again!

Having read the previous review of the Fountaine Inn by John W, of Banbury, I felt compelled to add my two-penn'orth as we Northerners say in between fending off the disapproving gaze from the neighbouring table whilst tucking into my mountainous portion of traditional Yorkshire fayre and no vegetables!!!

We have stayed at this establishment on many occasions and have always been impressed with the high standard of cleanliness, quality of the food and indeed the friendliness of the staff who go out of their way to provide what has to be one of the best pubs in Northern England!

As John W quite rightly points out, two of the rooms accommodate dogs and also surprisingly children who are also welcome to stay when accompanied by responsible adults

The accommodation at the fountaine is within the tastefully converted Minns barn which is located to the rear of the main building and it is worth bearing in mind that should you be unable to tolerate the occasional bark from a canine, footsteps making their way to the loo during the night or indeed god forbid, the sound of children talking then it is probably worth considering a caravan, tent or perhaps a monastery for your romantic break!

If on the other hand you desire to experience the delights of this hidden gem nestled in the most wonderful location then you won't be disappointed with the Fountaine Inn

The bedrooms were thoughtfully converted with good quality fittings, ipod dock, decent TV, bathrobes, coffee facilities etc and were spotlessly clean. Unfortunately two issues significantly spoil a comfortable stay; the temperature that could not be reduced below 22 degrees (despite the outside temperature being less than 12) and noise from adjoining rooms; the pub welcomes dogs and we had one that persistently yapped in the next room which, combined with children that were playing in the room above and were clearly audible from six in the morning, did little towards any rural tranquillity. The restaurant rather resembled a crèche with crayoning paraphernalia provided to keep the children happy; great if you are a family but not for those who seek a peaceful dining experience. Food is generous in quantity and OK in quality but vegetables are generally an 'extra' which may explain why, of the three courses selected by the two neighbouring families, there was not a single contribution to the 'five a day';- roast beef and NO veg; each to their own! The pub is otherwise attractive with a good choice of reasonably priced beers and wines and pleasant service. Our final bill for our weekend was incorrect and their ultimate acknowledgement was more begrudging than apologetic which was an unnecessary pity.

Room Tip: Go in the winter and make sure there are no dogs or children in adjoining rooms

Popped in on way to kettlewell for lunch and it was great! Garlic mushrooms to die for and Chips superb! Had fish cakes too and hot beef sandwich. All washed down with a top pint of wharfdale blonde. Top notch- we will be back for sure. Really helpful bar man and clean throughout !
