Tarn House Holiday Park
Ranked #1 of 1 Stirton B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 9, 2013

We arrived at the Tarn house up the long drive and passed the caravan park and the lodges and feared for the worse. The house itself looked fine and the gardens whilst not spectacular complimented the old house. We entered and were met by some very friendly and helpful staff who booked us in and showed us to our room.

The room had a four poster bed and whilst fairly old and dated the room was freshly decorated to a high standard, very clean and very pleasant. The bathroom was spotless and the bed comfortable and the linen fresh. Tea making facilities were gratefully utilised.

We didnt use the bar or the other public rooms but did look around and all were clean and welcoming. We did enjoy the continental breakfast which was substantial and enjoyable.

We arrived after the restaurant had closed but the staff arranged for us to have a meal and were very helpful and friendly overall. Our room was large and comfortable. Plumbing was fine. The decor is new and fresh but seems to have been chosen from a 1970s back catalogue. Anyway, lack of style is easily outweighed by all the good points.

We have stayed at tarn house on approx several occasions we have stayed there with friends..also with relatives from Australia.. And also with family..we found the rooms ..service ..continental breakfast..and views ..fantastic we are going again with friends in 4 weeks time and looking forward to it.. Some of the negative comments people have posted on here are unfair ..we have travelled the world and could if wanted find things wrong ( nit picking) almost anywhere BUT the money you pay for tarn house is well worth the stay.we have had very little problems at tarn house and if mentioned they make good.. FOR THE PRICE AND WHAT'S INCLUDED WE FULLY RECOMMEND TARN HOUSE. Richardson family..

Room Tip: We have always had a good clean room some with stunning views some not just ask..

Staying in the same hotel twice in the space of 6 weeks must mean that it's good - and it is!
We have had a couple of family weddings recently and both times decided to stay at the Tarn House. We weren't disappointed.
First impressions count and the friendly receptionist and staff make you feel at home as soon as you arrive.
The rooms are spacious, clean and nicely decorated with lovely views over the grassy area if you have a room at the front. Even the rabbits seem to be happy bunnies as they hop around on the grass! We had a large 4-poster bed in a room over the bar and it was very cosy. Tea, coffee and toiletries are provided but perhaps a minor niggle is that only plastic cups are provided in the bathroom. We were going to a wedding and champagne in plastic cups is just not the same!
We had a meal on the first night and it was very tasty. The apple crumble was delicious but was enough for 4 or 5 people. The food was good value too and service was polite and efficient.
The highlight of the evening was joining in with the quiz, bingo and 'Play Your Cards Right'. The locals were very welcoming, even though we won nothing at all. It was a great laugh.
Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. They put up with our relatives tramping in to get changed for the wedding and called taxis for us too.
Breakfast is a continental buffet which is nicely served and plentiful. OK it isn't a full English but there is ham, boiled eggs, cheese, fruit, yoghurts, cereals, pastries and bread so you won't starve.
To summarise - Tarn House is a cosy, welcoming place to stay. I'm sure we will be back!

Room Tip: The rooms at the front have a lovely view over the lawns.

We attended a wedding in Bolton abbey, bank holiday weekend and most hotels were either booked up or wanted a two day stay. So availability was a big issue. We arrived fairly late about midnight and the keys were in bar, barman was very helpful. Rooms were clean and recently decorated. Beds were interesting mine squealed like a pig every time I rolled over. Following morning we tried to get a shower It was an electric one which took 5 minutes to warm up and then more of a trickle than a deluge. Breakfast room was a bit like a scene from waiting to exhale, continental breakfast was ok but very ordinary.
For 85 dont think it was anything special, staff were very good though

When you turn in off the road be aware it is a long drive with many caravan signs along it but no confirmation you are arriving at the Tan House. Keep on and you will get to itu. The people are very friendly here and it is obviously set up for walkers and tourers. I was staying for business on a Tuesday night. I was surprised on arrival to be told there was no evening food available. If i had known I would have stopped onthe way through Skipton. Continental breaksfast started at 8.00am - a bit late for me.The room was lovely. There was noise from the bar immediately below so if you are a light sleeper going to bed early you may want to make sure you are not over the bar. Wi fi was free and trouble free. If I was walking and touring or high season I suspect I would have given this a four but for out of season business stays it is a three.

Room Tip: Four poster over bar for romantics but if you sleep light ask to be elsewhere

I have very mixed feelings about this place and we did discuss our collective thoughts before I put fingers to keypad.
Good stuff:
Incredibly helpful staff - the night we stayed there was a rugby match on and the staff phoned around local pubs to see who would be showing it on our behalf. Way beyond the help I was expecting.
The night we went they had an Irish band on (for Paddy's day) and so the kitchen closed early but they made sure we knew and kept things open to make sure we were fed.
Food and drink was very good prices and quality.
The atmosphere in the bar was friendly and lively, and again, great staff.
The latter 2 are important because it's not really walkable to anywhere else so once we'd got out of our walking gear we wanted to stay put.

on the downside was the plumbing (one room had no flushable loo, and the other had incredibly poor shower pressure and temperature - boiling water or no water), and that the breakfast was a continental. Very unusual for a Yorkshire country hotel to not do full breakfasts.

the rating of Average feels a bit harsh still - if I could I'd give it 3.5 and call it a good!

Room Tip: rooms in the eaves are colder (not cold but noticeably cooler than the main house levels)
