We had a wonderful stay at Les Frenes. We found the hotel staff to be gracious and helpful, and found the hotel to be beautiful. We were traveling with friends and found Rooms 7 and 8 to both be lovely. Room size was quite large by French standards, and the bathrooms were particularly nice. We had the same experience as others--the air conditioning was not very robust, but the large windows cooled the room well for our September stay--not sure it would have been the same in July! We also had a beyond-slow experience at the hotel for dinner. We were one of only two tables on a Thursday night, so perhaps others are staying away. That said, the food was quite good and we found the prices to be in line with other nice restaurants. It was an easy drive to the city center, and we loved being a bit away from the bustle of the city. If you're looking for quite elegance during your stay, we'd most definitely recommend this hotel.

Room tip: Rooms 7 and 8 are large with nice bathrooms and big beds.

Les Frenes is a very pleasant property approximately 10 minutes from the heart of Avignon in an upscale village on the outskirts of the city. The property comprises a central house dating from the early 19th century and a number of outbuildings surrounding a large yard with a large pool and spa. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our superior room with balcony was immaculate and pleasantly furnished with a modern bathroom with large tub. My only major negative about our two night stay concerned the air conditioning that barely worked during two days of a major heat wave. If we had not brought a fan with us in our car, we would not have been able to sleep due to the barely wheezing air conditioner. We also felt that the cost of the breakfast buffet was rather steep at 20 euros per person...just ordering a coffee and croissant cost 11 euros so we decided to decamp to a local cafe in the village at more than half the price. On the plus side, the pool is large enough to comfortably do laps and the pool temperature was ideal for a hot summer day. Another plus was the ready availability of a secure parking space on the property which is something you normally would not have if you were staying in the old town of Avignon. On the whole, we had a pleasant stay and would recommend it.

Room tip: Room 11 had a lovely private balcony overlooking the garden.

We were referred to this hotel by a friend who had stayed there a few years ago. This hotel did not disappoint. Although it is not downtown, it had a very peaceful location in the suburbs. The employees were very friendly and although their English was limited, they made the visit all we had expected. Great food in the dining room, wonderful rooms. I would stay there again when in the area.

Excellent staff willing to accommodate any of our needs, but the grounds were in disrepair. The swimming pool is not heated and the hot tub was not usable. This could easily be a 5 star hotel with a little TLC

Room tip: Choose a suite.

BEWARE: we went with a group of friends after our wedding in the Ardeche - the hotel itself and rooms were lovely.... However we ordered a bottle of wine thinking it was the house wine only upon leaving being given a bill for a 90 euro bottle of wine. The staff were so arrogant saying that we were lucky we werent given a more expensive bottle! Please note - demand to see the wine list and make sure you sign for everything as they will probably try to sting you as they did us - good luck.
