“Nice hotel, shame about the service”
Reviewed August 19, 2007

My family and I stayed at the Novotel-Royan in early August this year.

Hotel is in the right position by the beach, with great views from all rooms, and within walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants.

We have stayed at the Novotel-Royan for the past 3 years, and found the rooms and overall conditions satisfactory, just a few
things have not changed in the time we have visited Royan.

My family and I found staff surly, and you had to keep their interest alive to get any service in bar or restaurant.

We never had a meal that was delivered on time, or complete as ordered. When asked to correct the mistake, they got upset.

Consequently, we eat out in the town, where we found, amongst other establishments, an excellent Indian restaurant (Taj Mahal) which was excellent ,both in service and value for money.

Novotel-Royan's Menu consisted mainly of sea food dishes, which I understand, due to it's location being local produce, but who wants to eat fish 7 nights in a row?

Pasta dishes or alternatives were all beyond the chefs ability.

Come on Novotel, for €180 (GBP125.00) per night, plus food I do expect better.

We had two nights at the end of a stay in a rural gite, and wanted some comfort and a little luxury by the sea before we headed home, so we booked for two nights in the Novotel, Royan. At €180 per night it was quite expensive, but we hoped would be worth it.
The location is great, on the point overlooking Royan Bay in one direction, and a small beach the other way. I would assume that all rooms have a good sea view. But this proved to be the only good thing about the place.
Parking is a problem - there is no private carpark outside, and the places by the hotel are used all the time by visitors to the nearby beach. The only alternative is an underground carpark for €15 a night, which we felt was a lot given the price of the room.
The room was badly planned - on one side of the bed you had to scrape along a rough wall to negotiate the 1foot gap to get into bed. It was also full of chairs, which we had to keep moving around as they were in the way. There was a good 2-seater settee, a small table with TV, 2 upholstered chairs and 2 metal chairs, plus 2 deckchairs on the balcony outside. The chairs either obscured the view of the TV or just blocked up the remaining space. We also found that it was impossible for someone to sit on the balcony with the door closed, as requested to make the airconditioning work efficiently, as there was no handle to get back into the room - great planning! We have stayed in many Accor hotels, and frankly this room was not as good as those in Ibis hotels (at about a third of the price).
Things got worse - to my horror I found the bed had a hard plastic undersheet (perhaps they have lots of incontinent guests?) so I spent the first night sleepless and hot and sticky. When I complained about this the next morning, I was told it was "hotel policy" and had to argue to have it removed.
Then we went into breakfast, 45 minutes before they were due to stop serving. There was no scrambled egg or bacon, and we were told the bacon was "finished". They begrudgingly went to fetch more scrambled egg, but when it arrived it was cold and inedible, seemingly made of some sort of powder, not real eggs. When we complained about this, someone headed off towards a microwave, and seemed surprised that we didn't want microwaved cold eggs! The manager arrived and agreed we would not pay for breakfast, but no apology was offered.
By now we thought nothing further could go wrong, but on returning to the hotel later that afternoon, we asked how to get to the swimming pool, and tried to follow the directions given, with no success. We asked again and were finally told it was closed, the reason given that it was not finished! At reception we asked if there was another pool and were told we could use the Thalassatherapy pool, but not until 5 pm (2 hours later), and on reading the tickets we were given, found one had to wear bathing caps and plastic sandals (both available for purchase in the hotel!).
Quite frankly this was the worst stay in any french hotel ever! The staff were sullen and unhelpful, giving no information without constant questioning. No apology was ever given for any of our problems, and no compensation offered. We were treated as a nuisance by all the staff.
My advice - camp on the beach rather than visit this overpriced apology of a hotel!

Nice & clean hotel, located on a cliff. In general the staff & food are on general Novotel level --> medicore. However the location & the rooms make up for it. Still the prices are to high for what you get. Nice place for older people who can enjoy peacefull surroundings & nice location.

Having bought a house in the region, I have stayed at this Novotel once during the winter and once during the summer of 2002.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable and all have a balcony with seaview (very closeby). The housekeeping staff are thorough and unobstrusive.
The food is excellent as is the service although I did find the latter somewhat erratic during my summer stay due to the full occupancy. Be prepared for lots of noisy kids during the summer.

There is one restaurant and a small bar off the lobby that does not see much usage, mainly I suppose because it is so public. Roomservice is prompt and the kitchen staff will go out of their way to prepare any dish that may not be on the menu.

As I was out most of the time, I did not avail of any of their health therapies or even the pool and tennis courts, which are reputed to be quite good.

I will be staying there again next spring and look forward to be welcomed back by their friendly staff.
