“STILL GOOD, BUT ........”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

I last visited this hotel/restaurant 3 years ago and was very impressed with the attention to detail of the owners. Since then much money has been invested in extrodinary decoration and furnishings both in the public areas inside and out. You may love it or hate it but you will not IGNORE it!! The gastronomic restaurant, established by his father and now overseen by Chef Arnaud Lallement is excellent, Quality and service par excellence. BUT compared to my visit 3 years ago the menu and table now has lost the unique imagination it previously had. With such competition in the area for "fine dining" Chef Arnaud needs to re create the magic to justify the prices. The hotel rooms are passable but need some refurbishment and the staff whilst polite could be a little more friendly. Plenty of free car parking and the gardens are a special feature in the warmer months.

Our stay was for one night in late January. Our usual stop-over hotel unfortunately closes at this time of the year and with limited quality accommodation available in this area, booked L'Assiette after reading such flowery reviews. Our party found the staff to be incredibly pretentious and unwelcoming. The rooms, bar and restaurant are unbelievably expensive and in our opinion of only average quality. We were mystified by the sticks of candy-floss, lollipops and confectionery that accompanied our dessert course, also why we should want to choose our particular blend of coffee from a quantity of jars on a trolley? To sum up, a disappointing, expensive stay and one we could not recommend at this price.

This second visit did not belie the expectations laid down on our first. If you, like me, need to recharge your batteries after long working spells, look no further. Great spacious rooms, big beds and enough peace to send anyone into hibernation. The staff are friendly and helpful without being deferential. The food on this second occasion matched the standard of our first visit. I wish we had elected to enjoy more than one meal. Do not expect the food in the the City centre Brasseries to be as good as in England. If you, like my wife and I, enjoy shellfish, stick to oysters, lobsters and Champagne. We look forward to our next visit.

Our stay at LÁssiette Champenoise over the New Year period was pleasant, although we had booked a standard room, not the refurbished suites depicted in the photos. The room was well-furnished and as expected for a nice hotel, but lacking in modern conveniences or modern touches. The room was also unreasonably warm, with no temperature control to turn down.

The public areas of the hotel were a delight. We were able to spend some time in the gardens, as well as the indoor heated pool. There are also a number of opulent sitting rooms which are perfect for a happy hour drink - one purchased earlier in the day from a local champagne house - not the hotel bar which was excessive in both range and price, with very little at the affordable end of the champagne and wine spectrum.

Free wifi is available in the rooms, an iron available from reception [although no ironing board] and a dated inbuilt hairdryer in the bathroom. No tea and coffee facilities, which is unusual. Previous reviews have suggested the hallways are dark, but light switches are placed at intervals along the corridor so this is shouldn't be an issue.

Staff were pleasant and courteous though just shy of warm and welcoming.

The major drawback for this hotel is the location - without transport we relied on taxis to ferry our party of four between Reims town centre, Champagne Houses and the hotel, subject to an inexplicable range of tariffs ranging from 8 euro to 20 euro for each similar one-way journey. Unlike other major towns, there does not seem to be a great public transport connection between the Hotel and city centre. Fortunately, most Champagne Houses are located within walking distance of the town square, but day planning is required to avoid ferrying to and fro.

The hotel is surrounded by residential urban sprawl, so don't expect to be able to wander down the road for a coffee or breakfast in a cafe. This explains the monopolistic 25 euro the hotel charges for breakfast, although the food is highly and consistently rated.

Location aside, the hotel provided a much-needed relaxing base to unwind and relax for a few days, perfect for travelers not constrained by tight time frames or a busy itinerary, but looking to soak up good wine and food in the Champagne region.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room and specify any conveniences you might require

We spend a great week end in champagne at l assiette champenoise.
we arrived and unfortunately their was no one to get our luggage from the car.when 3 people was waiting behind the desk.
we were greating by the chef himself which offered us for a very low price and amazing upgrade.
It is defenatly time for the older room to get renovated.
We were upgraded on a junior suite. The was just amazing, latest technology lighting. a lot of space. you fell at home away from home.
unfortunately they did not have available space for us to enjoy the diner, but we have booked at le Crayeres. Amazing diner.
The beest is the pool open till midnight. (but it is not possible to enjoy champagne their) maybe they should purchase nice plastic champagne glasses to enjoy it even more.
We were surprised we could not make a coffee or a tea when we wake up this morning, maybe a good touch to add in the room.
We recommand this adresses to everyone, for a romantic week-end out of Paris.

Room Tip: Ask to stay on a new renovated room only.

My husband and I stayed here on the last night of our surprise first anniversary trip to champagne and he really did save the best to last. The hotel itself was very luxurious, and I particularly enjoyed the pool and gardens. We ate in the 2 michelin-star restaurant and had the 'surprise tasting menu' which really was out of this world. This is also apparently the only restaurant in the world that serves Krug by the glass, and having just visited Krug we felt we had to continue the theme! It was not cheap but genuinely was a wonderful experience. The staff were first class and very very helpful and accomodating- we will definitely return one day.

This is a business trip which we didnt expect the champagne house to arrange us to stay in this petite but beautiful hotel. The suite junior room is clean but too large for me alone. There is a big garden behind and a in-house swimming pool but not the season for a dive. The outdoor of the restaurant A.Lallement is decorated with designer furniture and the atmosphere is simply the best. Wonderful experience!
