“Affordable accomodation, nice room but poor service.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2012

The rest camp is right in the middle of the small city Uis. We were nicely welcomed and showed to our flat. It was getting really cold outside and we were told that we would get extra blankets. Nice!

Soon a man came and we thought we were getting our blankets - but not. We were asked when we were going to come for dinner, we ordered (there were three choices) and we agreed on a time. The blankets would soon come.

On the set time we arrived. It still took us one and a half hour until dinner was ready. By then we still had not got anything to drink. Food was all right, we had booked "DBB" and got a full menu.

Finishing dinner we returned to our room and once again asked about those blankest. They were coming right away. They never came.

Breakfast was from 7 and we had a long day ahead of us so we were there at 7 sharp. By then nothing was available. Half an hour later we could get coffee and some cereals and long after that the eggs and bacon. After a lengthy check-out procedure we were finally off after 9.

To sum it up: This is a good nights sleep with good food at a very reasonable prize. Unfortunately the apparent uninterested staff brings the overall impression from a top mark down to an average.

Room Tip: We stayed in a "Self Catering Flat" with number 33 called "Messum". It had a cit...

We stayed at the restcamp for 2 nights. We had booked the tour 360° around Brandburg mountain. The room was very basic and the entire place looks like it never had a makeover since the 60s.
Basil, the owner and tourguide, and the tour are the only reasons anyone should come here. The tour was fun and interesting and Basil, allthough he was a bit under the weather, was also interesting.
However, the demotivated staff and the costprice of the tour made us glad that we were leaving. Basil told us that some people expect star quality in a no star place. This is true, it is a no star place. But when you have to pay star prices one expects more quality! We did a tour at Walvisbay 2 days earlier and payed only 2/3's of what Brandberg charged us for his tour, and this tour didn't include oysters and champagne lunch in the desert and a trip on a boat. The staff was really the worst: unfriendly and slow. The food was also a problem, unless you are happy with a very, and I do mean very, limited choice of German food.
We really enjoyed Namibia. We also enjoyed the tour with Basil. But if there is anything we would change about our 5 weeks trip, it is our stay at Brandberg Restcamp.

Brandberg doesn't seem much when you first arrive but it quickly feels like home. We had a self catering unit which was clean and spacious. There is no aircon but there are ceiling fans, be prepared to feel hot! The main guest area / building is great, very large pool, nice outdoor eating area, cool bar, and everything is really well priced. We were fortunate enough to meet Basil and his mate Louie. We had braai with them on the second night we were there and it was a great laugh. Real salt of the earth guys. Nice place to stop on our way through to Etosha. It was a bit annoying that we had to get all the kitchen utensils from reception in a box, but I guess they have had issues with theft...

Room Tip: In hind sight we would probably have just gone with a room near the pool, we didn't really use t...

A real oasis deep in the desert of Namibia. This place has nice rooms with an airconditioner that works well, and that is a priceless thing in the summertime in this area. Very clean rooms and grounds, great dinners, lunch packs and breakfasts. The manager, Basil Calitz is very entertaining. This year he brought out a "DUPPA" which was some type of contraption that you load with snuff, rest your nose on a pedestal and on the count of 3! you inhale and they hit a hammer on a spring loaded lever that catapults the snuff into your nose. Then, just when your tears are over you chase it with a special desert liquor. Now, this is not something I would normally do, but he explained it was an initiation and great fun! I was leery at first but my friend tried it first and I thought - what the heck! Besides, there was a dozen people staring at me to see if the American was gonna chicken out. I can say it was a real eye opening experiance! This restcamp is loads of fun and their is usually something fun and/or interesting going on every night! Thanks Basil, and I will be back soon!

Room Tip: avoid the rose quartz room. it is shocking pink. The other rooms are nice.

A very comfortable base. Clean, spacious rooms with air-con. Fantastic swimming pool and Basil was in the process of upgrading the deck chairs. We enjoyed an excellent day out with Basil, where we were lucky to spot a desert elephant. Food was perfectly O.K. given the price your were paying and the service might have been slow at times, but we stayed at more expensive places and the service was slower. I managed to leave my credit card behind, after paying the bill, however the staff at the camp got it to Swakopmund and I was able to pick it up from a bank there the following day. How is that for service! We would certainly recommend this place.

The pool is fantastic and we were happy with our room, right next to it! We weren't the only guests, so the four dilapidated deck chairs could not cater for all of the guests. Apart from the mediocre quality of the meals, the service was really the poorest we've experienced during our two-week trip in Namibia. The excursion, which costed 750 NAM Dollars per person could easily have ended in disaster because we got stranded kilometers away from any road without petrol! Luckily one of the local inhabitants of a kraal happened to have a vehicle with petrol to drive us the 100 or so kilometers back to the camp - where we weren't even offered a free drink or some reduction of the trip fare as compensation for the inconvenience!

We do apologise for any inconveniance or poor service during your stay. We are currently taking our staff through a training schedule to ensure our guests get the best service possible. I would however like to comment on the vehicle that ran out of fuel. We had a new fuel tank installed in the vehicle a couple of days before and since then found out that the outlet from the tank was installed wrongly causing the vehicle to run out of fuel. The tank was however still more than half full and would have easily completed the trip should it not have been for the mechanical defect.
Please be ensured of our continuous commitment to improve the local experience of all our guests.
