Finally back to Pogusch in December after a 2 year break. My wife and I have been lucky to have lived in 5 countries in Europe as well as the US, and to have enjoyed visits to many excellent restaurants. This one is simply special - one of my absolute favorites. In fact, my only complaint is that it is in the middle of nowhere, and difficult to get to (unless you wish to splurge and make use of the helicopter landing pad directly across the street, which is not in my budget). At the risk of sounding uncritical, Pogusch simply has everything: Outstanding cuisine based on many local ingredients from the surrounding area, a charming rustic, familiar atmosphere - but at the same time incorporating a creative touch and a few surprises for the uninitiated, and a comprehensive wine list - with the opportunity to wander around and make your choice from wines displayed throughout. But perhaps the largest surprise comes when you are ready to leave (for us this time about 5 hours after arriving - and still reluctantly!). I know of no other top restaurant in Europe that offers equivalent "bang for the buck" - everything is reasonably priced. Pogusch is simply amazing, and I sincerely hope it never changes.

We went to Steirereck Pogusch on the way from Vienna to Graz. The restaurant itself is very original and the food very good. This Steirereck is quite a bit cheaper than the restaurant in Vienna, I suppose because it is situated "in the middle of nowhere". It's definitely worthwhile going there, especially when there is snow because you can go for a nice walk or even sledging.

At least once a year we visit this authentic restaurant in the lovely surroundings of "Hochsteiermark". This time we spent 3 evenings in a row and were a bit disappointed. The lamb liver and the black pudding were excellent indeed, but the roasted duck we had had much better before. The second day we went for fish which was very good but the starters lacked creativity. (soup with baked liver dumpling and tartare). We were reconciled with an excellent mousse au chocolade. The third day we took the set menu (4 or 5 courses at reasonable price), a big mistake: it would have been better to choose from the à la carte menu. It does not matter that they serve smaller portions but it seems that everything is pre-prepared and not so tasty.
But most of all the service has got worse! Still a young team - but they are hopelessly out in the blue especially with the amount of big groups to be served.
Generally speaking we had the impression that with the increasing success they don't care so much about couples any more. Although we principally support the philosophy to serve local products we also would have liked to try some Spanish or Italian wine by the glass. Anyhow, it remains a charming restaurant, and it's incredibly important for the economy in the region.
