Dewalokam Farmstay Retreat
Certificate of Excellence

We stayed at the Dewalokam Resort for 2 nights as part of a bicycle tour organized by Kalypso Adventures (also highly recommended: www.kalypsoadventures.com). Dewalokam was wonderful. You can choose to relax in a hammock by the river or take part in various activities, eg "yoga on the lawn" before breakfast with a wonderful teacher, tour of the herbal, spice and organic vegetable gardens, jungle walk, cooking lessons, swimming, etc. The evening meal takes place on the candlelit patio, hosted by Sinta, Jos, and their two children, Tara and Paul. The chef is happy to oblige guests who are vegetarians or have dietary restrictions. Food is excellent. Massage and Ayurvedic treatments available. A very peaceful interlude.

We spent 3 weeks in Kerala in March, including 3 nights in Dewalokam. We were greeted by all of the staff, with jasmine garlands and coconut milk. The house was clean ,comfortable and quiet. The owners Joseph and Senna were excellent hosts, they made us feel at home, by the time we left we felt like part of the family. The food was excellent and we were encouraged to go into the kitchen to watch the meals being cooked.
Joseph showed us around the farm, we saw many types of spices and trees. We watched some workers collecting honey from the hives, and we had a taste of the honeycombe- delicious. We had a guided walk across the river to see the fruit bats. We spent most of the second day sitting next to the river and watching all of the birds, eg.g. cormorants and kingfishers. The whole experience was wonderful, and the best part of our trip.

We stayed in Dewalokam at the beginning of a 2 week trip to Kerala for 4 nights and by the end, didn't want to leave!
A driver came and collected us from Kochi airport and drove us straight to the farm, around an hour away in a fairly remote and beautiful surrounding. We were given such a welcome arrival by Jose, Sinta and their staff and immediately struck by how picturesque and idyllic the location is. We were taken to our A/C room in the main building which was really big and exceptionally clean; as is the rest of the property.
Whilst staying at the farm there is plenty Jose and Sinta can arrange for you to do, from walks in the surrounding jungle learning about the local fruits, spices and animals to trips out with one of the drivers - we went as far as Munnar on a day trip and also enjoyed visiting the local school. Its also fantastic to relax at the resort, swimming in the river or pool and looking at the crops and animals.
Although there were many, the two highlights of our stay were the people (Jose, Sinta, their children Paul and Tara and the staff truly made us feel like part of the family and were really keen to share the knowledge with us and make sure we made the most of our trip) and the food. Everyday you can have a cold beer at 6pm and a cooking lesson, learning how to make local dishes from the fantastic chef...before eating it! The food was so fresh (almost everything came from the farm itself or very local area) and absolutely delicious.
We enjoyed our stay here so much and really hope to go back again in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main building, but the none air con rooms in a block outside also looked really nic...

Just came back from 8 wonderful days in Kerala. We booked through the internet the first 2 nights in Dewalokam Resort. At Kochi airport we met the driver which took us through the woods straight 2 comfortable hours drive to the farm. We were welcomed so nicely and since the first moment till the last could't ask for more: The spacious spotless room, the exceptional tasty Kerala dishes and culinary explanations, the friendliness of Jose, Sinta and the kids which went our of their way to enable us a relaxed vacation, swimming in the fresh water, guided walk in the woods and in the plantations around, reading in the hammock... I highly recommend including this special paradise in any Kerala itinerary...

We arrived at Dewalokum at 5.30 am, very jet-lagged, and were met by Jose and made instantly to feel at home. After a couple of hours sleep we were up for breakfast and off on a forest walk, very wide awake and totally absorbed with butterflies, minahs, fruitbats, rubber trees, glimpses of locals gathering wood and animal food, washing clothes in the river. By the time we arrived back at base I'd ticked off about half the things I'd hoped see at some time on the holiday -and it was only lunchtime. And lunch set the standard for all the meals we at at Dewalokum: delicious food and good company.
And so our stay went on, relaxed, full of interest and friendly conversation; the farm tour was a delight, I loved the visit to the local schools, swimming in the river. I even enjoyed a shopping trip and I hate shopping.
The staff were great, always friendly and helpful and Jose and Sinta perfect hosts. I suppose we could have done one thing better: starting a holiday at Dewalokum sets a standard that's very hard to match after you move on ...
Thanks to all ...
Kath& John

My wife and I recently stayed at Dewalokam and, to be honest, it was only by accident we came across it since we didn't feel like the long drive to Munnar; we wanted an experience in the hills that would be closer to the coast.
So our expectation was perhaps a little low, yet it turned out that our stay was just outstanding. How many places have an utterly charming welcome ceremony involving all the staff and necklaces of jasmine which feels truly like a welcome rather than execution of an edict from some corporate office far away? I can't really add too much to what all the other positive comments have said but this is a place to go if you want warm and sympathic hosts, excellent food and wonderful natural scenery.
I even swam in the river that runs through the property which, frankly, is something I never thought I'd experience in India.
I can't rate this venue highly enough; thank you Jose and Sinta.
