“Nice middle of the road pub/restaurant”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

We went here with a group of friends in our car club - we numbered about 20 - we had given prior notice of our intended visit & The Chequers coped admirably. The menu is primarily traditional English & is very good. They have a very clever "time menu" that operates from 6:00pm to 8:00pm where the items on that menu are charged at the time you order - ie if you order at 6:20 you pay £6.20 - if its 7:40pm you pay £7.40 - What a great idea !! The food is really nice & all our meals were cooked well & presented nicely. The staff are good & friendly. Well recommended.

“Struggling for an identity?”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

This Pub/Restaurant has been many things over the years we have lived in the area but in its current incarnation, it struggles for an identity...Is it a gastropub? Is it English pub with food as an add on?, Is it fine dining? gourmet? I know not what! None of these, I suggest.

We visited for a family celebration recently and although some of the staff were effective and charming, there were times (even though it was nearly empty) when it was almost too much for some. (Unfortunately, one of these times was when it came to making up the bill!)

Nonetheless, the food was of reasonable value, good quality and well presented, however staff were reluctant to make even minor adjustments to dishes as requested by us,the customers. For example - we were warned we would upset the chef if one very simple item was left off a desert!

A shame. The potential is definitely there but there are so many established alternatives in the area, this establishment needs to review its performance and up its game. Perhaps the management should remember "The customer may not always be right, but he/she IS always the customer" A bit disappointing, I`m afraid.

“Disappointing the second time around”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

We loved this place when we first visited, but this time they must have had a bad day. The service was dreadful. Waited over half an hour for the main course, and even longer for the desserts.Yes it was busy, but they should be used to that. In the end after complaining several times to disinterested staff, we got up to leave before the puddings arrived, and sought out the manager (equally indifferent, but at least he reduced the bill). What food we had was OK, but such a disappointing experience. I considered giving them the benefit of the doubt last week, but was outvoted, so we went to the Oxford Arms at Kirtlington instead

“Oh dear this could have been good”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

The food was good. Pub food but well prepared, steaks as requested, plentiful. Pity one of the orders was muddled but quickly rectified. No complaints about the kitchen. The front of house staff were good in parts. Some were charming, for some we were too much trouble. I realise that we were demanding - not wanting the exact dessert - but.......
We had a good evening nevertheless. However my email about being overcharged about £20 has been ignored. What a pity.

“Good food and location.”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

Having been looking for a place to eat around Oxford, we came across this one , looking at the good reviews, we decided to find it. A warm welcome , and ordered food for 4 adults, good menu with a specials board. It was a good job we got in early as it became busy. Food good though with the ploughmans could have done with a bit more assorted salad. Other than that all was really good..well done to this pub.. We will return here next tie we are in this neck of the woods. Good value for money, nice and clean.
