“Lovely room but dining not up to Michelinsfandtard”
Reviewed March 3, 2014 via mobile

We have stayed and eaten at the Stagg Inn 3 times over the past 4 years as it is on the doorstep of a green burial site where my mum is laid to rest. We always stay at The Old Vicarage and really enjoy the characterful and very quiet rooms there. Each time we harbour high hopes for the evening meal and each time come away satisfied but not delighted. This trip was no different. Delicious starters (scallops for me, mackerel for my husband) and my husband liked his belly pork main course. My duck confit was flavoursome but let down by uncooked potatoes. Given its Michelin status and prices the main courses lack flair and originality. The amuse bouche underwhelming. Good choice of wines and ciders by the glass. Service was friendly and super efficient - just a hint of being on a conveyor belt but it was a busy Friday night. The young chap who seated us and took our order and the young clearing waitress were charming and did a lot to make up for the somewhat off hand manner of the Stagg's male host. I like the Stagg Inn and would certainly stay again as it serves us well. The test is would I take friends or clients there for dinner unless they lived nearby - probably not.

Eaten here about 5 times over the last few years and the food has never disappointed. First rate, inventive and top quality although, perhaps understandably, the menu is somewhat focused on Herefordshire farmer's appetites - mostly meat and veg!

Our most recent visit on a Friday evening will be our last I fear unless the patron can persuade his staff to work a whole lot harder on their interpersonal and service skills. They left me wondering whether they really cared about us as diners and valued our custom. No welcoming greeting, so-so service bordering on indifference at the bar coupled with a general air of detachment by the front of house chap. When a large party of diners arrived in dribs and drabs his greeting was simply to tell them "the others are down through there". No "Good evening", no "Welcome, let me show you through", zip, diddley squit, nada!

We left feeling unloved, unvalued and unwelcome.

This is a beautifully quiet B&B linked to a lovely pub. We stayed at the Rectory and had a peaceful night in a comfortable room. The pub team drove us up to dinner when it was raining. The breakfasts were wonderful. All in all, a great stay.

We had a pre-Christmas stay with dinner. Lovely restaurant and very nice people. We stayed at the vicarage, which is a couple minutes' walk from the restaurant, in the most beautiful room you could wish for.
Lounge downstairs with wood burner, which we had all to ourselves, very cosy indeed. Great place and we'll definitely go back.

Room Tip: The Winterton room in the vicarage

The Stagg is set in some beautiful countryside so it is not easy to get to, and requires a special trip. It is well worth the effort. My wife and I went back there for lunch on a Friday. Not particularly busy at that time, especially in January. As we found on our previous visits the food and service were excellent. Guests can eat in either the restaurant or the bar - where the restaurant menu is served in addition to bar snacks. A list of the suppliers is on the wall, all are local. The pheasant is accompanied with a warning that it may still have shot in it! Home- made crisps are brought to the table before ordering and home- made chocolates are brought with the coffee, a nice touch. Once again a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Had a lovely evening at the Stagg on thursday. As it was fairly quiet for the Stagg we ate with fellow diners in the middle restaurant which is our favourite.Nicola and Barnaby looked after us from the moment we arrived and we all enjoyed superb food.Highlights were probably the scallops on artichoke puree and the pigs head as starters and the delicate sea bass and lovely lamb combination for mains.Sweets as ever were delicious.Combine this with a couple of Nicola`s excellent wines from her winelist and we had had a superb evening of wining and dining.Unlike other imitators in Herefordshire the Stagg has maintained its very high standards over many years and remains very reasonably priced for what you get

Stayed for one night in a room in the pub - very comfortable and stylish in an old country house way. (So nice that the Beckham's would hate it which I consider high praise). But of course we were here for the food, and as usual it was just lovely. Proper, mainly local, food - cooked perfectly with an occasional flourish to keep Michelin satisfied. Pigs Head was a properly "fatty" croquette of deliciousness which the picked radish set off perfectly. Pheasant was musky with white truffle flavour, Pedro Ximenez cheesecake was a perfect end. Proper wine list which does not make you feel mugged and abused. Service is always bang on (no-one interrupts to ask if everything is alright) and knowledgable. 4th visit planned already!

Room Tip: Vicarage Rooms are perfect, rooms above the pub a liitle less expensive but still comfotable and cha...
