“Not as good as we had hoped for”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

We booked the Stagg on good recommendations from a number of friends, so arrived with high expectations. However this meal, though good in parts, did not live up to them. Some of our starters were good, but the scallops, though dramatically presented on a bed of hot stones, were not that special or tasteful. Crab and sweetbread starters were enjoyed by our table though, as were the lamb sweetbreads. My main was duck, which arrived cool. it went back to be reheated, which meant that the vegetables were soggy and overlooked. The crispy potatoes did not arrive, and were cold when they did. Other diners found the pork belly not well enough cooked, with too much fat and not enough crispy crackling. The steak was enjoyed though.

Puddings were better. However the three mini creme brûlée dessert might have been more interesting if it had been served as two creme brûlées with something crunchy to go with it.

We were hoping for a special evening, it was a family reunion, but I'm afraid this restaurant did not quite live up to our expectations.

I was taken by friends to the Stagg at Titley, which had been described to me as the 'first Gastro Pub to be awarded a Michelin Star' so I held great expectations! My starter 'potting shed' which sounded healthy was saturated with far too much oily mush then the plates were cleared while one of us was still eating, then those eating the lamb admitted it was unpleasant, rather undercooked and fatty accompanied with tiny potatoes with the contents scooped out and filled with an over-smoked addition and virtually inedible. However, my steak was good was also accompanied by too much greasy bernaise. On the plus side the wines were good and fairly priced, but overally the evening didn't live up to culinary expectations and I felt disappointed.

Just arrived back home from first visit to The Stagg Inn. The character of the pub is lovely. The quality of the food was excellent and for a Michelin Pub the food and drink prices are very reasonable. However, what let are visit down was friendliness of the service. There was no host evident to meet and greet and the front of house staff were very 'cool'. The waiting staff were very efficient but it seemed that there was little management guidance on how to provide that touch of friendly service that you would expect from this class of pub. To summarise, don't let my comments on the service stop you from going.

A beautiful old inn which hasn't been stripped of character, the atmosphere is relaxed and locals thankfully still come in for a drink in the bar. We stayed in the pub rather than the vicarage and found it extremely comfortable. The menu has plenty of choice using the freshest, seasonal ingredients. The steaks are worth having just for the béarnaise sauce, but there are good vegetarian options as well. A lovely setting, especially in the good weather when you can have drinks or dine at one of the outside tables. The wines list is good and quite reasonably priced as well. We stayed for two nights but found it so relaxing we felt like we were away much longer.

On Saturday 20 July en route to Monmouth from the Wirral, we pre-booked lunch at The Stagg Inn. A scenic journey led us to this gem in the countryside. Priviledged to eat in many fine restaurants with my job, The Stagg Inn must rate along with the very best experiences I have had. Service, selection, presentation and taste ensure a revisit on my wish list when travelling in this area again.

I have eaten both lunch and dinner at The Stagg over many years but have not been there for some time. However, be assured that the standards are upheld. Some friends and I went there yesterday and the Sunday Lunch was superb. Velvety soft, thin cut rare beef, the best roast potatoes in the country, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside YP and a good selection of beautifully cooked vegetables. Plus, a gravy boat - not an unwanted and unrequested nasty puddle on your plate as in some establishments. In a nutshell, a seriously good meal at a very reasonable price. Add to that, a good-humoured, very down to earth landlady and attentive staff who, although they keep an eye on you, they do not hover irritatingly over your shoulder. We did not take our woofs yesterday as we were going on to an afternoon bash - but dogs are made very welcome (as they should be if well behaved). See you again soon.

We ate at the Stagg tonight whilst in holiday in Herefordshire and I can honestly say its up there with the best meals I've ever had. I have the pleasure of eating at a lot of gret restaurants with work. If this was in London it would be twice the price and twice as busy.

If you like seriously good food then try it. If you like chain restaurants then give this a miss as it could be wasted on you
