The last days spent here before my departure and the best what I ever see in Fiji. Friendly staff, willing to help you more than you are expecting, never feeling hungry and boring. Don't think about to do a trip to Nanuku too long, it must be! One night is not enough, you will need more and more and be there again. Vinaka!

For the most part of the last hour now, I considered not to post this review for that simple reason that the place I've spend the last couple of days is truly a paradise and a very well hidden secret..

But first.. The thing is, you never know what a day in Fiji will bring and two days will never be the same. There is factors like weather, wildlife and of course fiji-time to be taking in to consideration. That makes only more important to chose a good base for your stay and to meet the right people, especially if you want to get off the beaten track. The Maravu is that place in Fiji! I found that this place is perfect for meeting following travelers to team up for adventures or just relax in between. I like the mixture of being able to go along withthe fijian rytm and hang out at the pool, eat great foods or drink kava and have a nice talk with the friendly staff here and at the same time being able to go exploring the island on your own, snorkeling or take the kayaks out to sea provided for free. But the real quality of this place is the planned tour activities. I will not say to much, for you should see for yourself - but whether you are into breathtaking waterfalls or going to remote islands they can make it happen here!

That brings me to the secret paradise, for when you have spend a few days exploring the Island with Ba or one of the other really cool guides here - go ask for Melly and a place called Nanuku! He is the guy you will be in debt to for making it all happen! Just to give you a quick idea about this place, it's a totally remote, palm island with nothing but a small hut and the must beautiful white sand beach. Furthermore it's has the most amazing reef for snorkeling here! You might even see sharks and on the scenic boat ride you might be lucky to catch a glipse of whales or sting rays - I did and when a young, french backpacker sitting next to me in the boat back quietly stated for himself: "I can stop looking now.." - I couldn't agree more! We found paradise!

this is the best backpacker place in fiji.
The huge gardens, the swimming pool, cava and guitare every night!
The great staff and all the activities every day will never make you want to leave this place!!
DO NOT miss the trip to Nanuko Island... It is the closest to paradise you will ever get. Snorkel there is amazing!

Tuvununu doesn't exist anymore. The new name is Maravu Resort. My experience over here was divine. The staff was very helpful, kind and enthusiastic about offering you awesome and interesting activities in this island and around. The bure/dorms and private bures were so comfortable and clean, very fancy (not in a posh way), they were located in a sort of a mini jungle place. Very impressive. There s a swimming pool with a little fall in it, there s a volleyball site, ping pong table, etc. The food is also very good. I would strongly recommend everyone to come here.

I stayed in Tuvununu beginning of September. The location is just beautiful right by the ocean. Perfect place to just switch off and enjoy as there is only generator electricity. If needed there is free wifi when the generator is turned on.

The staff was brilliant and very helpful with everything. Kava sessions with the boys at night and some fine language lessons were great. The cooks were brilliant. There was always a mean feed for diner. Super delicious at 20FJD.

There are many activities just around the corner and the boys from the hostel are happy to show you around!

Also you have the wonderful Rainbow Reef (includes The Great White Wall) just next to Taveuni island, which makes Tuvununu a nice place to stay.

All together very recommandable place to stay.

Thanks Eggy, June, Balu, Jeff, Rafaele and everyone else I forgot.
Vinaka! Max

Would love to be back one day

We booked a tour to Taveuni with a hostel on Nadi and so were expecting to stay at Maravu- the new hostel but it was not ready yet so we stayed at Tuvununu and we ended up loving it.
The rooms are very basic but have all you need. We shared a private double which had an ensuite. The first night our shower dripped all night but the staff were very good and fixed it asap. There is a lock on the door so you valuables were safe when you were in or out of the room.
Tuvununu also allow you to use their kitchen once they are finished cooking, this was very helpful for us as we were on a tight budget and bought noodles at the shop to cook there. However our friends had the dinners the hostel made and said they were fantastic.
With our room we got free breakfast which was cereal, fruit and pancakes (which were incredibly tasty!) The view from the breakfast table is fantastic, so beautiful and peaceful!
We paid to go to Nanuku island (private island) with Tuvununu and it is a MUST, we all wished we could stay there longer. Our guides Meli and Jeff were the best and cooked very tasty meals for us and scaled the trees for coconuts for us to try- they were literally fantastic and couldn't do enough for you. We slept under the stars on our matresses this night and it was so lovely.
At night in Tuvununu they drink Kava and everyone is invited, its a great opportunity to see a little bit of how the fijians live and experience it yourself.
I would definitely recommend Tuvununu to other travellers on a tight budget, its got a homely feel with the staff and dogs (Daisy and Snowy) and a beautiful view and is clean- what more is there to ask for :)

My big surprise was that after having booked and phoned twice nobody was expecting me. Than I learned that some guests had extended their stay and that I should go to another place because they occupied my room. The other place, called Maravu plantation was clearly not ready to receive guest (no electricity, no kitchen ready, etc.). After a candle night and no recharge for phone and computer and no internet, I asked to return to Tuvununu. I ended up in the dorm for me alone. Next day I came home after a trip at 7 PM and was told to pack and to move to Maravu again. What can you do without internet to look for another place except obey? After a move in the dark because still no electricity it was a wonder that a dinner had been prepared. After that the staff did all it could to make the place fine and to prepare nice food but still no internet, no fan and candle lite at night! a dirty swimming pool and a very dirty jaccusi with still water in the outdoor bathroom are the nicest breeding places so many insects can dream of ...
The original Tuvununu lodge had a location I will never forget! Just beautyfull with the perfect breeze!

Room Tip: On some website Tuvununulodge is still sold !!!!

Bula Vinaka,

thanks for the message and apologies about the mixup. Our lodge has experienced some unforeseen local issues over the last 2 weeks and as a result, we have temporarily shut down the main lodge building. We are sorry about the surprise, but we are very happy to offer a wonderful short term solution- all Tuvununu Lodge guests will get a free upgrade to the old Maravu Plantation Resort, a property just a short drive down the road. We have now fixed the new wifi, the new solar power and prepared the amazing swimming pool... and all our guests really love the place- especially the 5 star style main building and the private beach ;).

Sorry again and warm wishes from Taveuni,

The Tuvununu Tribe
