Hideaways at Palm Bay
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in George Town
Reviewed March 30, 2014

My wife and I recently returned from our first trip to Exuma. We have travelled extensively throughout the Bahamas ,but never to Exuma. The accommodations at Palm Bay were very comfortable. We stayed in unit #25, a one bedroom villa near the small pool. Staff was very friendly and did their best to help with our stay. first morning , I forgot to take the breakfast chits down to "Splash" where breakfast was served-Anita, our server, immediately took care of it. thereby saving me a walk back to the room. There was a mix-up with a taxi driver who was supposed to take us and three other couples to Coco plum beach for the day-Latovia hopped on the phone and instantly got us another driver who was getting his vehicle serviced, in a very comfortable Lincoln Navigator! We rented a car for two days and toured the island, everyone was friendly and helpful (had to stop and ask for directions several times) We stopped at Santanas in Williams Town for lunch ,but they were very busy so we backtracked about a mile to a new fish stand that had opened in January, our meal was excellent. We split a grilled lobster tail that was too large for us to finish, and the diver who caught it was having a drink there so I asked him how long ago did he catch them. My lobster had been caught two hours ago. The chef at this little stand had just graduated from the Cordon Blue culinary institute in Miami. We did the tour with Coastline adventures, Captain Bob Smith, highly recommended. All in all a wonderful trip.

Room Tip: We liked the rooms around the small pool, kind of like a small community, got to know all our neighb...

I have never stayed at the same place this many times.
When I was planning a spring break trip, there wasn't any discussion as everyone wanted to go back to Exuma (duh), but the clear choice of accommodations was Palm Bay, again!
There were 8 of us, my wife & I, our son and his wife, our college daughter & her boyfriend and our high school daughter and her friend. Trying to arrange a trip for this group was surprisingly easy: A couple of different villas at Palm Bay, a couple of boats from Minn's, MANY trips to the grocery store and we're done.
Palm Bay has lots of room to move around, great selection at Splash, kayaks, shuttle into town, calm water, boat mooring, etc. that you won't be disappointed with this choice.
There are choices on Exuma as I have looked at them all! Having stayed at Palm Bay 5 times AND have already booked SIXTH stay, should tell you something.
Keep in mind: Not all the villas belong to the 'association' and use of the amenities is nOT allowed. PLEASE make sure you book with one that is so you have use of shuttle, wifi, pool, room charging privilages, use of kayaks and pool toys, etc..
BTW: Staff was FANTASTIC.

Room Tip: It's an island and you will want to see the water, pay the few extra dollars and get a room with...

This was our second time in three years. 1st of wife and I beach front. this time with kids in a two bedroom across the street with incredible sunrises and plenty of room. The condo was much better equipped than beach front upon prior stay. Check in and out was no problem. Used kayaks, hobie cat and pool several times. Moored boat from Minns in front, walked t Jolly Hall. After driving from end of the island to the end of little Exuma, you really cant beat the location! Kids loved it. Great value for the money! I would recommend especially for families. I hope we can make it back and would stay here again!

We really enjoyed our stay at Palm Bay. The location was perfect. The rooms are nice but a little dated. The beds were very comfortable. Excellent staff on hand who were always helpful.& friendly. Loved being greeted by Far Cat every day!

9 days of total relaxation and not to hurry. Highly recommend for peaceful get-away. Beautiful waters, beaches and people. Splash menu greatly improved--loved the Philly- cheese hoagie and veggie pizza. Can't wait till 2015 for a repeat.

Room Tip: love our waterfront room

My husband and I just spent 8 nights at the Hideaways.
Our stay wasn't perfect, nor was it luxurious (you can opt a housekeeping option at added cost but we didn't), but we had a wonderful time there and would definitely consider going back.
We did have a couple of issues with the first unit we were in. First, our fridge broke, then the AC in the living room. We were told that power surges can frequently happen on the island, and appliances can get burned out.
The managers at the resort were very attentive to our needs, dealing with things right away, even on their day off in some cases. They were very kind and actually ended up offering to move us to an upgraded room, which we took them up on. They even helped us pack up and move.
The rest of our vacation was spent exploring the island and relaxing without incident.

The food in the Splash Bar is decent pub-type fare, burgers, fish sandwiches, chicken fingers, etc. We didn't do the continental breakfast option so I can't comment on that. We ordered a pizza one night and that was surprisingly good. We decided to do that after noticing that many locals do takeout there.

All staff that we encountered during the course of our trip were friendly, quick to say hello, and ask how things were going.
There is a shuttle that runs back and forth to town every 2 hours which is reliable and a nice touch.

That said, there are some things to know when considering this resort.
1) The descriptions will say 'full kitchen'. They are full-sized, yes. But certainly not fully equipped (unless, perhaps, you rent privately). So I wouldn't go on the assumption that you could save money by easily preparing your own meals while there. We weren't expecting a gourmet kitchen by any stretch, but we had to go ask for dish cloths and a cookie sheet (we got a baking pan).

2) If you are going to rent privately from an owner, you should REALLY find out if that owner belongs to the association on site or not. If they don't, and if anything goes wrong, you are out. of. luck.

3) Be prepared for an offline trip. And that actually applies to the island, not just this resort. If you're someone who cannot disconnect, this isn't the place for you. There is wifi in the common areas..... some of the time. You'll get kicked off from time to time, and there will be full days where there is no internet at all. Or even phones/landlines for that matter. This is a remote island. Things are different.

I spent a week at Hideaways with my 2 teenagers and my mother. Travelling with 3 generations Beverley at Hideaways worked closely with me to book us the best cottage for our needs. We stayed in #10 also known as Windmill Palm. It was a 1 bedroom wtih 2 queens and pull out couch with 1.5 half baths and mini kitchen. The location was perfect. It was oceanfront, oceanview with very close access to the beach and views of the pool and Splash. Everyone at Hideways was always very helpful. Kelly was great bringing us the kayaking equipment and paddle's for paddle boards and was also often the shuttle driver into town. The pools were always clean and there were lots of chairs and umbrellas. The beach infront of Hideways was a little rocky but seeing a turtle, stingray and starfish regularily made up for that. A short walk down the beach and over the road is totally awesome Jolly Hall beach. You can go there for a day and not run into a sole! Splash restaurant/bar at Hideways was great. Beautiful ocean breezes and views, great servers and food. The best deals, $10 for an angus burger and side and $18 for a medium 8 slice pizza loaded with toppings and don't forget the local beer Kalik, a must try!! There are 2 pool tables at Splash, darts and an outdoor fire pit.
Hideways was a perfect place to get away from the busyness of life but still have some creature comforts.
There is a car rental place right across the road. I highly recommend renting a car for at least 1 day to explore the island. Head down to Little Exuma and have lunch at Santana's, the lobster is a must.
The only hitch in our stay was the confusion over what breakfast plan was included. I had booked with the understanding we had free breakfast included any item. Upon check in we received breakfast vouchers for a value of up to $10 per person. At breakfast we were then told the coupons for only for the continental breakfast and for items off of the menu there would be an additional $5 charge per person. I went back to the front desk with a print out of my reservation and the breakfast menu I had been emailed and they agreed to honour it even though their breafast plan had recently changed.
Other than that the vacation was PERFECT!! The people on Exuma are friendly and helpful. If you want to do an excersion check out Starfish Adventure. Lindsay and Neville are wonderful. Their boat is docked just down the beach and you will often see them at Splash.
Thank you Hideaways, I can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: #10 is oceanfront, ocean view, pay the extra and enjoy!
