First class accommodations with a top-notch restaurant and excellent service. Our hosts were delightful and shared their knowledge of the area freely. The setting was excellent, the beautiful landscaping and plants added to the get-away feeling. Every detail was very well thought out. The outside shower was fun, but the outside toilet was a bit hazardous with the mosquitos at night time. We timed our visit to coincide with the arrival of the Olive Ridley turtles and they put on an amazing show – our hosts at the Luna Azul were extremely helpful in contacting knowledgeable guides and providing additional information, making our visit an extremely rewarding experience.

We booked ourselves in for a couple of nights at this wonderful hotel run, with amazing care and expertise, by Rolf and Andreas. At the end of each day we found ourselves saying.... "would you mind if we stayed another day?" and ended up staying 4 nights (at which point my boyfriend dragged me back to Alajuela and I wished I'd stayed behind!).

The hotel sits up in the hills behind Playa Ostional, and quality wise, in my opinion, is not far short of a 5 star hotel! We stayed in a beautiful little bungalow with an "outdoor bathroom", not quite as scary as it sounds - and being able to stand in a warm shower during a rainstorm looking out into the rainforest was a very new and exhilarating experience.

Breakfast and dinner is "something very special", both locals and tourists come to the hotel to enjoy the wonderful food and hospitality.

We were lucky enough to not only see turtles nesting on Playa Ostional but also had the opportunity to go swimming with them! Playa San Juanillo, also just a few minutes away by car is a great little beach, which we pretty much had to ourselves where you can spend hours searching through the rockpools for all kinds of critters, safely swimming in this little bay and beachcombing for that very special shell to take home.

Getting to the hotel is "fun", with several river crossings no matter whether you come to the hotel from the north or the south. You must contact the hotel shortly before arrival to make sure that the route you plan is available, whilst we were there we had to come from the north as the Rio Montana was not passable by car.

This charming hotel run by swiss is the place to be if you want to escape the incessant hustle and bustle of the urban world and find yourself in a little paradise. This is the 4th time that we return, again with much pleasure, it's almost our second sweet home; the charming owners do their best to make us feel comfortable and relaxed.
The 7 bungalows are in the local style furnished, very clean, quietly located in a really nice garden surround by tropical forest, some are overlooking the Pacific; we love the open bathroom, it contributes to intimate contact with nature. Imagine yourself, at a breathtaking sunset, taking a shower, unique !
We usually wake up with the vocalizations of monkeys and birds singing. This time, of f Ostional, we had the joy of observing whales, dolphins, sea turtles and rays; it's so exciting and marvelous to be as close to this fragile wildlife. Around the hotel, we frequently went for a walk to watch monkeys, koaties and birds (woodpeckers, parrots,...). Not far from the Luna Azul, we often went swimming and relaxed on different calm white sand beaches.
The restaurant offers fresh seasonal products, local and mediterranean style dishes, very well prepared and presented; the service is extremely friendly and even better than in some famous worlds' restaurants !
After a day wandering around in the wildlife, contemplating the beautiful rough black sand beaches or just relaxing at the swimming pool, a very nice dinner with a glass of an excellent wine from Chile, ends the day in a perfect way !

Year after year, we have found it a wonderful place to relax and recharge! The bungalows are spacious, comfortable, simply but tastefully furnished and decorated with good materials; food is always fresh and delicious. The owners are two wonderful people who, over the years have meticulously kept up this little paradise.

I absolutey loved this little piece of paradise! We stayed for 4 nights--myself and my husband and our 2 boys--ages 8 and 11. The rooms are very comfortable and private. Absolutely love the outdoor bathroom concept!! I found sitting on the rocking chairs on the patio so relaxing...listening to the monkeys and other jungle noises. This is definitely not a touristy area and it felt like a nice break from of the other touristy areas that we visited. Rolf and Andres (sp?) are so gracious and Rolf was so knowledgeable about the local wildlife...especially the turtles which were lucky enough to see. What a great experience!! The food is exceptional! Breakfast is a feast that will absolutely carry you to almost 2pm!! We ended up eating dinner at the hotel every night (which is not usually our custom). The food was very good, different each night and the service by Juan was outstanding. What else can I say? I loved it!!

One caveat...we met some people later on our trip who were traveling to Luna Azul by way of a transfer. I would definitely want a car to stay in this area...not just Luna Azul, but the whole area. Other wise, I think that you miss out on some of the adventure of seeing the area. Also, the travel to Nosara can be tricky (and downright impossible) during the rainy season. One of the river crossings is pretty serious after a good rain.

We spent two nights on our trip through Costa Rica in this absolute beautiful boutique hotel in the middle of nowhere. It was our best stay - our bungalow (tropical) with romantic outdoor shower was very clean and privately set in the very well maintained tropical garden, where a family of howler monkeys stayed over night. The food (amazing breakfast with fruits, homemade marmelade and bread, bacon and eggs, typical Costa Rican Gallo Pinto) was outstanding: the dinner choices were the best we had in years!
