“Get in touch with nature...”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

I went to this place for a reason - naturopathy. I was dealing with a stomach illness for months - had tried everything and I am simply not a fan of medication and short cuts in general. There aren't really any short cuts in life...surely, if it seems like one, I have found myself back at the point where I started - with time, money and effort wasted in taking short cuts.
I had been looking for a place - Jindal's and Nisargopachar ashram in Pune are difficult to get into at the last minute. One needs to book at least 6 weeks before to get in. And Dr. Murthy seems very knowledgable - he managed the Jindal's and also headed govt college in his past. This was my first experience with naturopathy. I have to admit that the place isn't clean. It needs to keep up with times. But...I compromised cuz I thot this was really about nature cure...I shouldn't expect a 5 start treatment at 3 star price and that too for nature cure. nature is messy...this is just how it is. It's not Taj or Oberoi's. I have stayed in those places...and you pay a huge premium for that experience. The treatments were good...I saw a change in my illness after just one week. I will go back there...this is something I plan to follow every few weeks until I can get my health back to normal. So, overall a good experience. Don't expect a luxury treatment - its not meant to be...its a bit like an ashram. If the goal is healing, rejuvenation, internal cleansing, do consider this place. And yes, the staff is very human...they dont' have everything figured out...but they are nice people...

I've stayed at this resort so many times, and not necessarily out of choice.
And Yes, I always am dying to get back to civilization in a few days of being there.

But then again, I never went there for a luxury trip, and so over time I've come to appreciate the wonderful oppurtunity that presents itself, to be one with nature. Nothing can change that.

Sure, the staff are not trained for star quality. Most all of them come from the adjoining areas, and some from the North of India. But like most rural souls, they warm up to you if you have no airs.
Mr. Purohit, the manager, has been there for so long, and he is kind to those who are. Attitude gets you no where here.

The food is that of a health resort. Health food (read vegetarian, home cooked variety), but tasty. Non Veg is available on request. If chinese is on the menu, don't expect what you think you should be getting. China is a ways from Karjat.

It not expensive to stay here, but is certainly not budget. And after you've had the long and picturesque drive thru the county side (especially in the monsoons) you are in the lap of nature, with all it's inhabitants there. Insects, reptiles, and a vast variety of fauna.

Yes, that may give you some sleepless nights, considering that beds are functional, as is the bathroom. You might get the occasional lizard in the room, and the storage is sparse, so it may be best to stay packed and live out of your bags.

A great place to get up early and walk around, since it has a walking/jogging track, a yoga hall (open air) and a swimming pool. The massage parlor is something you might be tempted to try. At your own risk though.

They serve you tea in to your room early morning, and every room has a sit out. It a great experience sipping tea and watching the rains. In fact, that's the only sound you'll hear on a rainy day.
The winters are a great time to visit too. Summers...? That's why they have beaches.

So if you want to experience rains and nature, up close, you'll get it at Dr. Modi's...but not with Luxury.

And sometimes, that is luxury.

Room Tip: It's a motel concept, so you can drive your car right up close to your room. The further away f...

The most ill maintained and distressing customer experience one could ever have. I only stumbled on this resort out of necessity due to my wife needing to put up in Karjat due to her treatment at one of the local doctors.

The rooms are ill maitained,
- you find insects and roaches
- the A/C have not been maintained for many many years
- the bedding/matress has not been changed since the resport was started
- the bathrooms still operate on lousy geezers that take ages to heat water
- the lights go off serveral times in a day

And the service is third class
- the staff are local, cheap paid and so dont know anything about customer service
- neither do they know how to clean the room and the bathroom in particular
- an aged manager who speaks arrogantly when you complain about a facility
- restaurent serving oliy and fat food, claims to be a heath resort
- swimming pool has not been cleaned for ages, my son developed a skin allergy on having a swim
- there is construction work going on with no safety precautions for guests staying at the resort
- the kids play area is largely ill maintained and rusty play equipment which could be a major safety concern

Overall it seems Dr. modi only runs this as a part time business for pocket money and his wife seems more interested in the plants / trees around the place - with no ivestment in upkeep of the resort since it has opened many years back

I would recommed no one in their sane mind to even think of putting up at Modi;s. Better to put up in Mumbai or Pune or Navi Mumbai that at Modi's.

Room Tip: dont even think of putting up at this resort

The resort is ideal for the weekend gateway near Mumbai. Its located at Karjat.

We were there for a weekend and it was a fun. Complete Leisure having widely wonderful cottages for the family. Enough space outside the cottages to play around for kids.

The spa and massage treatment is superkool and must for the travelers. They have enough indoor and outdoor sports to keep you busy.

Food which is the part of the package is good .

Do plan during monsoon & it would be a fun

This is the only resort I have stayed at in Karjat - an impulsive selection rather than based on any research. This resort is better than many other resorts I have stayed at in other places. But still, I would classify this place as 'yet another resort'.
Nice place, lots of greenery, nice looking bungalows. Gives you a feeling of peace. Nice gardens, well maintained, and clean environment and clean rooms. Food was tasty, the restaurant staff quite helpful and nice. It was interesting to see the staff scrubbing the sidewalks clean.
The open drains are an unwelcome sight, though.
The rooms stink of mold/ fungus - and the bed / mattress too. Had to keep the door and windows open for a long time to bring it to a bearable level. This, in spite of the fact that occupancy rate is quite high at the resort.
Food is available only during the specified times - if you are late, you may not get enough in time. If you decide to spend some extra time at the health club, you may end up with no breakfast. The table cloth could have been cleaner - we could see a lot of food stains and dried left overs from the previous users :-) Room service for food is available - but quite expensive. We had selected a package with all food free at the restaurant, but even with that, if you ask for food / beverages in room, it can be quite expensive.

The swimming pool looked good, with nice view from the deck. But when we got into the pool, found that it was quite dirty. The pool is filtered continuously by pumps, but found the filter chamber infested with frogs! Pool had a lot of floating debris! Bad decision to get into the pool - not a healthy pool at all. There is a walk through jacuzzi by the pool side that does not work - and no one has any idea when it worked last !

The list of facilities at the health club is quite impressive. The health club is apparently frequented by senior citizens on recommendations from doctors. There are a few medical packages too at the resort. But when you enter the health club, you get the feeling of entering a hospital, and not a spa - that is a great put off. The jacuzzi does not have hot water - only cold water. Apparently the hot water line has not been working for a long time, and everyone avoided an answer. Steam room was good. Sauna boxes were not working Full body massage was good. One could make out that the masseur had undergone some training. And female massagers are available too for lady visitors. We discovered that the masseurs double up as the sweepers in the facility - kind of a put off, from hygiene point of view. Although there was no stink - we were the first ones for the massage - there was a lot of reluctance from the staff in providing fresh, clean towels for the massage and later for the steam room.

We could feel that for anyone who does not have his own means of transport, it can be a problem - no convenient public transport nearby, and the resort does not have any pick up / drop off provision.

The staff were quite nice and accommodating.
Maybe we selected the wrong season - monsoon time - for the trip, and hence the negative experience. Considering the great environment /ambiance that they have, it could have been a much better experience.

This is just another standard resort, better than most I would suppose but still fall short on some important aspects. The rooms are all peeling paint and water marks. The beds are hard and small. The sheets and blankets are on the old side and the brown blankets are reminiscent of an old peoples home. But the place is clean, and that counts for a lot. So in summary the accommodation is simple, and functional but clean.

The location is pretty good, about 40 mins of the main Pune Mumbai highway.

The resort is also very well maintained and apart from open drains which can let off an nasty whiff, the lawns and trees make for a very pleasant atmosphere.

Food, is standard fare, tasty and plentiful. You will not go hungry, however, the meal timings are a little restrictive, so be prepared to ask for a meal earlier if you need, and they are likely to help. They did with us.

The facilities are pretty good, swimming pool was really quite nice, but no chairs or shade to allow lounging by the side of the pool. we did not make use of the spa or any other facilities.

What is so surprising however is that the place costs 3500 INR plus tax for the room. We thought it was too expensive, but then there are no other options that we know of!!! A captive market.

Dr Modi's is great to rest a weary head on the weekend, but not for a week long vacation! The location is excellent for cycling or hiking from Mumbai or Pune, <Matterhan is just up the road. Stop for Wada Pow on the corner of the old Pune Mumbai highway!!! Yum Yum!
