“Average for restaurant in 5-star hotel”
Reviewed January 6, 2012

Very friendly staff for both dinner and breakfast buffets. At dinner the wines ordered were mixed up and the wrong one brought to the table. When I queried this the staff member said "maybe it was from the bottom of the bottle". The steamed rice that went with the curry was undercooked and crunchy.
At breakfast, also in Kalinda, they open at 0630 hr but are not ready to serve. Both mornings I had to eventually ask for someone to get kitchen staff to come and fry a couple of eggs.

“Breakfast by the pool”
Reviewed November 28, 2011

Liked the range of food, pricing was great for families, whilst we were stayng at Royal Pines with the kids eating free.

It is relatively open looking out tot the pool with high ceilings, with outdoor tables protected by a high sail it meant it was a great place to eat before a morning of fun at the pool.

I found I needed to go to the Lobby bar to get a decent coffee though.

“Excelent value, food and service - a great evening”
Reviewed October 7, 2011

The seafood buffet at the Kalinda, within the Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast, has to be one of the best kept secrets in dining on the Gold Coast.

Whilst the booking system may leave a little to be desired (they're working on it), once there, you are greeted by friendly and polite staff, waited on by attentive and professional wait-persons and attended by professional chefs who understand how to make good food.

The array of seafood is generally crab, oyster, prawn, salmon, smoked fish, marinara salads and many more night to night variations. The salad bar is fresh, vibrant and imaginative with something for all but the most 'anti-salad' person.

For the carnivores, roasted meats, pork belly, chicken and other dishes more than satisfy. Steaks and prawn skewers are cooked on demand, to your liking and Omar (Chef) watches the quality of everything to serve only what he would eat himself - making a pleasant change from many other experiences of similar format.

For the lovers of Indian food - Rinesh (Chef) makes a spectacular Indian Butter Chicken and will give you chopped chillies if desired. I can't wait for the monthly Indian Feast night to start where he will be given free reign to bring the real tastes from his childhood kitchens to all of those lucky enough to get a seat.

The seafood is still the star and the oysters are normally creamy, perfectly fresh and very, very tasty. The rest of the seafood is of similar quality and will satisfy all but the most picky of patrons. The crabs, as they often are, tend to be left alone for fear of being fiddly, but are normally worth the trouble to extract the wonderful meat with the correct utensils on offer (something that can lack in other similar buffets).

Dessert can be a little variable, probably the only part of the experience which could be lifted to be consistent with the rest of the fare on offer, with some gems popping up from time to time, but with cheescake flavoured filling in small plastic cups, it is hard to get excited. Undercooked rice puddings do disappoint after the high standard of the mains, and a little more care, tasting and imagination would make a huge difference. The lemon curd tarts and a few other treats have been pretty great , so the wise patron will choose carefully and still walk away happy.

For those who want to come back, mention to the Frequent Diner's Programme to receive every sixth meal free (essentially a 20% discount off the already reasonable price).

The promotions for this restaurant seem to be lacking, and it may be labouring under to less than stellar reputation gained by the old management when it was The Parkview restaurant; before RACV took over. I was one of the ones who left, vowing never to return, after two less-than-average experiences a few years ago. Now, the Kalinda gets two thumbs up and it is a shame to see the restaurant still less than full on Friday and Saturday evenings when the buffet is on.

For those who are looking for a nice, good atmosphere, great food kind of evening, you will find the Kalinda a great choice. For those still reeling from the bad-old-dyas of the Parkview, have another go,.. I have not been disappointed in five meals over the last few months (held my review to make sure the standard was consistent). Those who follow my reviews know that I do not pull punches, and despite the defensive and sometimes personal comments in response from vendors, I choose to write honestly and openly so that others can save time and money.
