I was quite nervous and very curious at the same time before entering this temple. Incredible. I was amazed and in awe of the devotees visiting this temple. I took a beautiful photo of three women with their children, one with a baby one week old taken there for a blessing. It was a bit smelly and dirty, but either wear sox, or a pair of feet covers before you enter. Beautiful silver doors at the entrance with rats living behind them. Incredible, but then India is just that.

Since it a popular mandir it was tempted to go there which is home to hundreds of rats....these rats are worshipped there and people offer them milk and sweets...

But after spending 5-10 min in the temple you will like to move out as everyone cant stand these rats for long.

Its about 25 km from Bikaner and an Auto will take 300 rs to take you to and fro....

Worth a visit if you are coming to bikaner for the first time...

On the fringe of the Thar Desert, lies this holy temple built around 100-150 years ago. The temple is most famous for it being the abode of thousands of rats living on its premises. This attracts hundreds of national as well as international visitors every day. The temple can be reached from the nearest town of Bikaner by rail or by road in under half-an-hour, and from Delhi in approx 8 hrs.
As Deshnoke lies quite close to the desert region, the temperature generally remains in the extremes. It is advisable to carry protective clothing to shield one self from the scorching sun. Also, wearing socks inside the temple helps from accidentally stepping over rats. There are a number of dharmasalas in the vicinity of the temple where one can stay and have refreshments. Tons of water should be handy to survive the day.

Do listen to advice and bring socks. It is best to go after sunset as most of the rats sleep all day, hidden. If you are a rat lover, you'll be amazed. All the squeaking, jumping and scampering. Could have spent the night there. If you don't like rat that much, no worries. The rats are very used to human and none of them actually bite. You can even pet them!

The Karni Mata Temple also known as rat temple is an important Hindu site. It is about 30 km from Bikaner It is a beautiful temple made of marble with solid silver doors. However, it is not the architecture of this temple that attracts tourists; it is the thousands of rats that inhabit it. This is considered very auspicious as is spotting a rare white rat. Bowls of milk and water are strategically placed throughout the temple and pilgrims feed the rats balls of sugar. You may be asking, "Why all the fuss about rats?" Well, there is history behind it which you come to know when you visit that place.Be careful while moving inside temple as rats may ran over your foot.
