“Much improved”
Reviewed November 14, 2012 via mobile

There has been a complete turn around with this restaurant. Food was very good, staff very friendly and a nice setting. They have a great specials board with a wide variety of food. Only thing we missed was the special £10.00 lunch. Well done

“New owners, much better!”
Reviewed November 12, 2012

Worried a little from the reviews but was pleasantly surprised. New owner has been in for 2weeks. Menu varied with a good specials board. Pricing reasonable. When food arrived it was presented well and was substantial in size. Both myself and my friend enjoyed our meal. Staff were friendly and attentive. The bar area was a little cold but once the wood burner was lit it soon warmed up. Give them a chance, they've a lot to do to get the place turned around but for now food and company was good.

“Excellent, incredibly talented chef”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

We have been visiting the Botany for many years and the chef has not changed. The issue with the standard of food at present is that the current owners are leaving and so have lost interest in the pub and have cut expenditure so the chef is unable to provide the excellent quality he has previously strived to. The chef at the Botany is incredibly talented and has an endearing passion for food. As can be seen from the previous reviews it has always been a very good or excellent establishment but when the current owners decided to leave so did their interest in the place. Ownership is changing hands presently and therefore things will be back to the high standard as previously displayed. Give the chef a break he can only cook with what he has been given!

“Pretty vile canteen style food which should be avoided at all costs”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

I thought the food here was horrible. If the Botany employs a proper chef with any skill I would be very surprised. The food gave the imression that it had come ready-made straight from the local cash and carry and reheated on the premises. So much for the "Specials" menu. Lazy cooking and at these prices a rip off.

Avoid.

“Not good at all”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

We live locally and decided to visit the Botany Bay Inne for lunch when on our way to see some friends. This was a most disappointing experience indeed and a text-book example of the very worst of everything concerning pub catering.

We both ordered off the "specials" menu thereby naturally expecting something home-made and tasty. We got neither. I had steak and ale pie and my wife had the beef casserole. The pie was a complete disaster. The sort of cheap and nasty pie that you get in low market chippies and bad transport cafes: flabby, horrible pastry around a slurry of nondescript gristle and gravy. The casserole was little better inasmuch as one could recognise some meat chunks within (also a lot of swede), but that was its only grace.

When the staff member asked me the usual "how was your meal" question I was assured, albeit a little unconvincingly, that the pies were home made. She then reverted to saying that the pastry, at least, was home made. If this really was the case then the chef should be sacked! My feeling was that these pies were bought in from somewhere and, given that tIhe Botany is charging £9.50 for such rubbish (pluse a few chips and peas), I feel ripped off as well as disappointed.
