What a wonderful place - tucked away in the middle of nowhere but crucially within walking distance of a couple of pubs. Light pollution does not exist here - so calm and peaceful. Tthe hosts were so friendly and genuinely wanting to make our stay memorable.

My husband and I booked 3 nights here for 28, 29, 31 October and had put the post code into the sat nav to ensure that we didn’t get lost. Mistake! We later found out that all the property in the area has the same post code and were told, by the sat nav, that ‘we’d arrived at our destination’ when we were only at the bottom of the hill and had no idea where to go from there. We drove a little bit further across a small bridge and came across a ‘private road’ sign and turned back. It was pitch dark and we telephoned the B&B for directions. Bill, the owner, informed us that it was across the little bridge, up the private road, and at the top on the right. Easy when you know, but difficult in the dark!

We were welcomed, like most people, personally by Bill the owner. Bill is a really friendly person, very chatty, but not pushy at all. We were shown to our room, the Olive Room, which looked a little dark to begin with as the lights were 'energy savers' and took a little while to warm up, but they were soon fine. Our room wasn’t massive, but really cosy and comfortable and the decor was fine. We had a king sized bed and there was a wardrobe, sideboard, table and char and another sideboard next to the door, there were also bedside cabinets complete with radio alarm clock, torches each etc. Plenty of storage space in the cupboards and drawers. There was also a hairdryer if you needed it. The sideboard contained a kettle, cups, biscuits and sachets of various teas, coffees and milk cartons. There were also 2 bottles of water on the side and these were replaced daily.
There was a flat screen TV mounted on the wall – but who needs TV with the lovely view out of the window to the fields etc. I loved waking up to see the horse and various sheep all grazing about.
The bathroom was lovely, with a huge roll top bath and a walk-in shower; there was also a toilet and bidet. There must have been at least 8 fluffy towels on the side for you and lots and lots of pampering pots and jars everywhere, such as foot scrubs, aromatherapy creams and oils, bath salts and soaks – it really was a nice touch. There is soap and hand cream too, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own with you.
What a lovely place! I know there are plenty of pictures on the internet to look at but it doesn't really give you the feel of the place. There are pictures and knick-knacks everywhere and it’s really welcoming and homely.

We arranged to have our breakfast at 9am and were delighted to be served a mixed fresh fruit plate first. We both chose the farmhouse cooked breakfast, which was a lovely treat for us as we are normally used to rushing through a quick cereal and racing off to work. There were lots of cereals to choose from and fruit juices too. Toast, coffee and tea on offer and lots of unhurried time to enjoy real hospitality. It was very nice to sit and chat to the other guests and to Bill about where we were from and what our plans for the day were. We never felt rush or hurried and it was so good to just relax in good company.

We spent a whole day at Monkey World, which is very close, and was one of the main reasons for our trip to Dorset. In the evening, we walked down to the local pub and were extremely glad of the torches provided at the B&B as it was totally pitch black – quite fun really! We ate a few times at the nearest local pub – the Botany Bay Inne and were very pleased with the food on offer. You could have a light bite or a proper meal and it was quite reasonable.

I always try to be very honest about my reviews on trip adviser and tell the good and the bad things, but it’s been very hard to think of anything that wasn’t positive about this place. Yes, the shower could have been a bit stronger and the floorboards did creak a bit in the bathroom! For me the bed was a little too soft as I have a rock hard bed at home (back problems), but having said that, my husband said he loved the bed (better than at home) and that he’d slept like a log – as did everyone else we spoke to. This is a really lovely place and Bill and Shan are excellent hosts (even if Bill is a Spurs fan!!!). We thoroughly and highly recommend the Hilltop Barn.

We stayed here for 3 nights on 20th,21st and 22nd August 2011. We had a wonderful stay, didn't want to come home. We were greeted by Bill the owner when we arrived and sat on the patio with tea and home made cake (a lovely gesture). We stayed in the "Olive" room which was absolutely lovely with a great view to the rear of the barn- waking up to views of countryside, sheep, Danny the horse and ducks!. We were made to feel very welcome by Bill and Shan. Breakfast was spectatular with a great selection of local produce and presentation was second to none! Bill was very helpful and knowledgeable i.e what pubs to go to and places to visit. He even told us about how he and Shan first acquired the barn and stories about the conversion of it. This was very interesting and like a "Grand Designs" story.

We will be recommending this B&B to all our friends as this is the best B&B we have ever stayed in. We admire Bill and Shan for all their hard work and wish them many years of success running their B&B.

We will definitely return!

Jacquie and Andrew Preece from BIRMINGHAM.

Room Tip: Olive room was lovely with great views. All the rooms are lovely with their own theme.

This is a home fror home B&B, Bill & Shan are wonderful hosts and you feel very comfortable in their company. The breakfasts offer a wonderful choice and they even cater for awkward folk like me who can't eat Gluten or Wheat.
The room was lovely - and the barn just seems to wrap itself around you. Its peaceful &quiet and in a lovely village which reminds you of the times when it was safe to let children play outside all the time. The pub grub on the main road is good value for money - although I struggled with their generous portions ( still full from breakfast). The added benefit is that you can walk off the calories on the way back and you don't need to designate a driver.
Lyme Regis is about 40 mins drive away and that's like stepping back in time too - with the colourful beach huts/mini golf and sailing boats in the bay.
we went for a week end and hope to re-visit next year.

Room Tip: Ask for the new room its huge!

We stayed here to visit Monkey World and the accommodation and hospitality far exceeded our expectations. We were welcomed with yummy homemade cake and a pot of tea - just what we needed after a long journey. The hospitality was exceptional throughout - we even got to see the animals - the 2 lambs were so cute especially Dolly :-)

We were impressed by the hotel because of the:- Quiet and tranquil location, the view from our room, the room had everything you would need including bottled water and lovely biscuits, room was nicely decorated and clean, excellent breakfast. There is plenty of information available and we were given some excellent recommendations for meals out (The Blue Vinney was outstanding).
