“A great family vacation spot!”
Reviewed August 5, 2007

After a very late arrival in Shoal Bay, we were amazed to wake up in our 2 bedroom unit to discover that we had panoramic views from every window in our unit! Moreover, a veranda extended the length of the unit so that this vista could be enjoyed from every angle (admittedly, we were lucky enough to be assigned an end unit placing us at the forefront location on the building). We were blown away.

The unit itself was spacious and bright. The furnishings were clean and pleasant, but not super luxurious or stylish. The bedrooms were a little on the small side, but the common area was extensive. The kitchen was functional and had a coffees, teas and biscuits waiting.

The resort had a fantastic pool with water spouts, a pretend "beach" and plenty of shallow spots for little kids to run around in. Our two year old could have stayed all day. The location of the resort was immediately across from the road from Shoal Bay and the long strip of narrow beach. It was within easy walking distance of everything in Shoal Bay (not hard - it's not a big place).

Included with our room was a buffet breakfast that kept us satisfied well into the day. The resort has a number of its own restaurants of varying price points and themes. We took in the fish restaurant - Catch at Shoal Bay - which provided us with a good meal (one plate of tuna was overcooked, but otherwise the meals were enjoyed) and a beautiful location. It was sadly lacking in other patrons, which was likely simply a function of it being a Sunday night in shoulder season.

Service was friendly. We loved it and would go back again without hesitation!

Found their reservation system frustrating, all done by e-mail which for such a large resort is antiquated, and in our case left us with no reservation as they claimed we had not replied to their request for confirmation. They managed to 'fit us in' due to a cancellation. You would expect a resort of this size and scale to have an on-line booking system with instant confirmation.

While the apartment we stayed in was supposed to be top of the range, (which it probably was five years ago) I feel they relied on the fact you had a lovely view and let other more important things slip dramatically.

The bed was uncomfortable, by that I mean to the point of springs poking out the side of the bed, the kitchen could only be described as filthy - a fridge smelling of fish, cupboards smeared with food, oven trays with the last persons cooking fat still on it etc. As far as cleanliness goes this would be one of the worst I have come across. Very disappointing and spoilt our visit to this part of NSW.

we stayed at the resort over the easter long weekend in a poolside studio. it was nice overlooking and being right near the pool. our little boy loved it as it had a wading pool and sand area to play and the water was heated.we were only across the road from the beach which was fantastic and there were heaps of restaurants to choose from as well as a supermarket & bakery all within the resorts reach.it was very relaxing and the staff were very friendly & helpful. the only thing i could fault was that the housekeeping didn't do a thorough clean each day and with sand getting inside the room from the pool area i had to ask them to come back and vacuum the floor and topping up of toilet paper, etc was overlooked.perhaps the housekeepers were new to the job, but other than that - it was great value for the money we paid.the aqua spa was also fantastic.. there were 3 spas. One at 27 degrees and one at 32 degrees in natural mineral water & 38 degrees in fresh water.it was very relaxing & soothing.would definately go back again to this resort... a real gem...can't wait!!

This was a significant (wedding) anniversary treat for us. Extensive internet research had led us to deciding on Shoal Bay Resort and Spa. We had a Heritage 1Br apartment. It was suitably luxurious, and exactly as depicted on the hotel's website.
Biggest disappointment, having booked a room with a balcony facing the watefront, was that the balcony wall is so high (probably as protection from the seabreezes) that, when sitting down, you cannot see the view without craning your neck. Glass balcony treatment would be so much better. I hope they consider changing it in the near future!
We got a last minute mid-week deal, which was satisfactory value for money, but would not have considered staying there for the considerably higher rack rate.
Staff very willing to assist, but some were quite new and didn't know their way around well enough.

  • Liked — Stylish decor, luxurious appointments, very clean
  • Disliked — Balcony wall so high that you couldn't see the waterfront view when sitting down
  • Tips/Secrets — While they may not be as nicely appointed, rooms/apartments of the Shoal Bay Resort, other than the Heritage or White Sands, have glass balcony surrounds and better views because they are higher up.

The resort is in a beautiful location at Shoal Bay. We had a Heritage apartment, which was lovely with a jacuzzi bath, huge tv and views over the front.

Nice relaxing place to stay

My girlfriend and I stayed here a few years ago before the main resort was built and we loved it then, but now with the spa, restaurants, brilliant new apartments and great staff it was a superb stay. We will be back soon.

  • Liked — Large apartments with superb views, new and with all mod cons
  • Disliked — It made me consider spending more money to stay for a month!!
  • Tips/Secrets — The bottleshop is hidden around the corner!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights in January 2006.

PROS
-courteous staff
-opposite a bay, suitable for sun-baking playing around in the water
-complimentary newspaper each morning with an activity sheet and the days expected weather

CONS
-our king bed, turned out to be 2 single beds put together
-Aqua Spa, the adults only area, had teenagers running around and closed too early, 7:30pm
-Only one pool which was over-run by kids and closed at 9pm
-Room service hours were 4pm-10pm
