We stayed here on the weekend, my niece was having her wedding here. We chose one of the Zenith apartments out the back just because they were the cheapest and we werent going to be there for long. It was comfortable for us and 2 teenagers. The bathroom is quite spacious for a couple of people to get ready in front of the mirror at the same time. The wedding reception in the Catch Restaurant was wonderful. We saw dolpins playing amongst the moored boats out the window which was a treat. I had the salmon meal which was nice, a few people who had the steak said it was grizzly and it was really rare. We all met up in the cafe for breakfast, the pancakes were really average - like dry cement slabs, the coffee was nice.

Room Tip: The deluxe suite that the bride was in, is right above the pub and they heard noise until 2-3am appa...

I booked a deal with "short stay breaks" in the poolview studio room. The hotel is easily found, the lobby is large and the staff welcoming and pleasant. We took our bags to our room and parked the car in the security garaging. The room was quite spacious with a king bed plus a single, a kitchenette (basic necessities with microwave and small fridge - which froze the food or defrosted), a round dining table and four chairs. The large sliding window opened onto a "Juliet" balcony (if Juliet means its not wide enough to put your feet onto) but it does give you a nice view over the pool area. The bathroom is basic (shower over bath with water all over the floor) but it is a reasonable size. Furnishings are basic too - good enough for what we needed but when you pay over $200 a night I'd be a bit miffied.

We did use the spa - well the free 25m lap pool and the heated spas (x 3) which was fantastic. I did look at the "menu" for the wellbeing facility but found it a bit expensive to indulge. We had breakfast and coffee at Mermaids bar and grill one morning and a drink that afternoon. We also had a drink in the Country Club hotel and loved all the local blokes which gave this a local pub atmosphere.

This resort is so well located that the wonderful surroundings make up for any shortfall in quality or service. We hired bikes and rode on the bike track to Fingal Bay and had a coffee at their new surf club cafe, and onto Little Beach where we watched many boats coming and going. We walked along the white sands and up to the headland.

There are lots of lttle restaurants nearby but the one I would recommend is Sienna's Italian @ 1 Trafalger Street, Nelson Bay - the best Italian I have tasted in ages and a good sized serve.

We have stayed here a few times. We love the area. Most areas were good but the reception service is slow. Can take ages to simply check in! Also the a/c in our room was broken so made it very hot and uncomfortable in the middle of hot hot February!!! The spa is great but quite overpriced. In general, rooms are clean and nice and has good pools.

Stayed here 2 years ago so noticed the decline in standards.
Great location but let down by service and run down nature of rooms.
The " service" at reception was a joke and had both my husband & I doing Fawlty Towers gags.
The room was tired and when I pointed out the A C did not work the staff member just shrugged.
Check our was a trial and the breakfast ghastly.
A shame as last visit we were happy.
not sure what the problem is but would only give it 2 to 3 stars.

Just spent three days at Shoal Bay, in a great room overlooking the bay. Nothing particularly wrong with the room at all -- it was large and comfortable with great views -- except that there was no obvious way to do any work there. Near the only table in the room (there is no desk) there were no electric outlets, so I had to move the furniture around in the living room to get the dining table close enough to a wall outlet to plug in my laptop and work. Very bad design on this point. a problem that could have been solved easily enough with a power strip and a long cord, but none was provided.

The hotel staff, especially at reception, are inflexible and not terribly friendly. The 'nice' restaurant was closed all three nights we were there because of weddings, and the alternative café is one of those 'order at the counter' places, not precisely 5 star. And the waiting staff were pretty clueless. One of them didn't even know what mustard was when I asked for some on my burger -- she had to go off to ask the chef if they had any.

They took my bags to my room but with a dirty look on their faces as though this was an unreasonable imposition (if this place was advertising itself as a 3 star hotel, and charging 3 star prices, this would not be an issue, but we were paying $330 a night). When I went down to check out at 12:15 on Sunday I got hit with a $50 late check-out penalty -- which they said was a 'favor' because after two hours extra they are 'supposed' to charge half a day rate. So in a resort hotel, on a Sunday, their check-out time is 10:00 AM, before many people even wake up on what's meant to be a relaxed weekend away! When I protested, the kids at reception basically said "sorry, these are rules and we are not allowed to change them". There was no manager on site able to do anything.

We rented a conference room for a meeting, which was provided with a few bottles of water for 10 of us, and when we ran out there was nobody who could get us additional water. We needed to go to the cafe and lug it back to the conference room ourselves. Totally unprofessional.

This place seems not to have management in place. The individual staff are young and inexperienced and don't know how to run a resort property. This place needs a manager with some experience running a high-end property. We won't be back.

Room Tip: If you go, get a room facing the bay as the rest have pretty dire views.

Stayed in the zenith rooms and it was like a maze and exercise course to get to them, climbing stairs, through locked doors got the heart pumping just trying to get the bags to the room. Over 3 nights we got our beds made once and only got clean towels once also, the rooms were pretty good with plenty of room but could have done with more than 1 small cake of soap for all of us for the shower and basin. Overall a great location but difficult access to the rooms and not enough detail to the small things did not make it a place we would go back to.

We were very disappointed by the level of attention and service that we received while staying. The 'Daily Servicing' was non-existent- we had to make our own beds, change our own towels and empty our own bins. The maintenance was pathetic- we complained that the air-conditioner did not work but they kept 'forgetting' to fix it (we were covered with mosquito bits from sleeping with the balcony doors open). The customer service was appalling- every time we asked for something we were ignored and given the excuses "We are very busy" and "It is our policy to take care of the new arrivals first".

As experienced travelers, we found this 'resort' to actually be a ridiculously over-priced and over-rated motor inn. There are plenty of other accommodation options in beautiful Shoal Bay- we will definitely go back to the bay but never the accommodation.
