We used to use this pub years ago and it was excellent but went into sad decline. I always remember it as The George Inn, not sure when "Ye old" appeared - might have given it 5 stars otherwise.
More importantly, it has now returned to being an excellent pub restaurant and we had a very good lunch with 3 friends so with 5 of us we sampled a fair bit of the set menu. Both the risotto and the belly of pork were very well received and the fish pie was excellent. Sweets were good and if there were no great surprises the Almond and apple tart was considered excellent. The set meal at £16 95 for two courses is not particularly cheap but given the overall standard neither was it particularly dear.
There was a good choice of wine by the glass at reasonable (if not exceptional) prices and the draft bitter was well received. I'm afraid the same could not be said for the expresso coffee which could have been had up under the trade description act, it was so weak and tasteless. However, we do like our coffee black and strong but that is how expresso should taste!! Service was fine and we were well received and given all the time we wanted without any undue delay.
If you don't know the area, East Meon is a beautiful village in a lovely part of Hampshire. Old Winchester Hill is a few minutes drive away with lovely walks and stunning views. The area and The George are both well worth a visit.
