“A Misty-cal Journey”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

Rumbling along on the cobbled pathway of the Jhaltola estate we made jokes about how the destination had better be worth the rugged terrain. With Oaks overpowering the exotic view of the valleys on one side and the tough mountain rocks closing in on us from the other side, we were beginning to feel like we were on the brink of an enchanting journey. Having this sense of something magical ruined upon arrival at The Misty Mountains would have just killed our spirits!

When we reached The Misty Mountains however, our spirits just soared right to the orange snow clad peaks which assured us that an unforgettable sunset was just the beginning of our trip.

The food cooked by Ambika makes you eat more than you wanted, needed or thought you would ever need. After stuffing our stomachs with delicious food cooked from homegrown veggies we would lie on our backs on the soft grass of the lawns and watch the clouds as they put up one performance after the other in the odd colored skies.

Every now and then an occasional mist would steal over to where we were lying and blind us to the beauty which surrounded us. The smell of the mist refreshed our souls. Sipping chai as we were enveloped in a cold, exciting hug by the clouds was undoubtedly one of the most riveting experiences of my life!

We were also lucky enough to watch the meteor showers in the starlit skies! It was more than we imagined it would be!!! From behind the veil of the stars, the moonlit Himalayas kept us company all night through...

Our cottage offered an exotic view of the vista. We woke up to the faint morning light filtering in through the window and watched the shades of nature paint the mountains in every shade of blue and pink...

Thank you Madhur for taking the efforts to build a comfortable stay in the midst of something as magical as these mountains!

We had a most wonderful trip in June at Misty Mountains. The warmth of the hosts Ambika and Madhur, their love for the mountains and knowledge about the birds makes the place very special. We made friends with the other guests, it seemed we were in a dear friend's home. The food was delicious, as were the special baked items in the evenings, the preserves, pickles, the wine and the spread of traditional Kumaoni food. It was difficult to say no to the helpings. The common dining ensured we interacted at leisure with others.

We were three adults and two young girls who did not miss their iPad even for a minute, which was saying a lot. They made up games in their special hideout in the cottage, made friends with the resident cats, read a lot and tried their hand at all the sporting activities such as valley crossing, trekking, ladder and rappelling. The adults trekked, walked, bird watched or simply lazed. The children did a walkabout and took notes and photos of the different flowers.

The skies did clear up after a night of rain, and the wonderful, majestic Himalayan ranges opened up. We sat for hours simply soaking in the view, and the next few days looked forward to those fleeting glimpses of the Panchachuli and Nanda Devi.

We hope to be back there some day.

We drove to this resort on the day of most horrendous rains in the state of Uttarakhand on Jun 17th, 2013. Despite so much of harsh travel, the place is worth visiting. Fairly good infrastructure built at a picture perfect location with coupled with excellent level of service. It has all the benefits of owner's managed property and warmth is seen in all the services. Madhur and Ambika (owners) take a lot of pains to make your stay warm and comfortable.

As I complained to the owner, the property was much undersold on website against the reality. When we reached the resort with our family, we were gladly surprised to see the place to be much better that shown on the website. This is a magnificent place to spend time away from glitzy urban life.

Do not miss to eat all natural pickles and jams prepared by Ambika, have the amazing fruit drinks and breathe a lot of fresh air to increase your lifespan and be able to visit this place again and again.

We stayed in a family cottage which is adequately stuffed with neat towels, blankets, pillows and other needs. The service boys serve you with warmth which aligns with the overall mood in the resort. We visited other room also and found that the cottages and rooms are similarly furnished, only difference is the capacity of guests. You need not bother to choose the room, ask Madhur and he will genuinely tell you the best suitable for you.

A large activity room to socialise and spend time with other guests. Play TT, Badminton, carrom, chess, cards, read books or watch movies on VCD. Or just relax on the costs by the window side and see the amazing views of snow covered peaks all around.

Outdoor activities like bonfire, nature walks, small and long treks are organised with trained guides. We took along their trek guide, Nitin with us to the lankeshwar trek and throughout the way, he enlightened us with local knowledge of flora, fauna and animals. His experiences of snow treks were worth listening to.

We and our kids with other guests enjoyed the adventure activities like Rappelling, Valley Crossing, Burma Bridge.

Last but not the least, the love for nature of the owners is reflected in every part of more than 5 acres resort. The property blends with the nature causing minimal interference with the surroundings. You may be lucky to see leopard, Barking Deer, Wild Hen, wild goat and other wild animals as a few guests before me had a chance to see. I could see and click a lot of flowers and beautiful birds.

Room Tip: Rely on owners choice, he will give you the best option.

Dear Nadeem Ji,

You braved real bad weather to reach us. Thankfully, our region has been left largely unaffected in the recent aftermath of heavy rains.

Thank you so much for your generous feedback. We have been fine tuning our offering for families, so your feedback is much appreciated. Thank you also for the wonderful photographs you have posted. I will write to you later to ask for copies and permission to use some on our website :)

It was great having you around and I have noted your inputs about the website. Will work on this soon.

Look forward to seeing you again sometime.

Tucked away in a quiet nook, The Misty Mountain is a treat for sore eyes and tired bones. We were a group of mother, fathers, siblings, cousins, kids, uncles and aunts, all of whom just wanted to get away from the heat of the city, catch up with each other and relax. And what fun it turned out to be. The retreat was just what the doctor ordered, from the clean, well appointed rooms, to the absolutely fabulous and courteous local staff, to the simple and delicious food. At our request our hosts graciously provided us with some wonderful Kuamoni food that I still think about. To start with the basics, the first thing about the place that won me over was the crispy clean sheets, towels and duvet covers. That scored them a perfect ten for housekeeping. Moving on, the peek of summer may not be the best time for the fabulous views that the place has to offer of the Panchchuli peaks, but that does little to diminish the beauty of the surroundings. We had a great time trying out rappelling, zip-line, trekking, and the best of the lot, badminton in the very spacious and airy activity centre. We were there for five days and frankly, time flew. Every single person in our group wanted to stay on for longer and the next time we visit we will make sure it is for a longer period. Now about the hosts. Madhur and Ambika were not only hands on, gracious and attentive, but also extremely well informed and astute, attuned to the requirements of every group staying with them, nether pushing people to try out everything, not discouraging the more adventurous but less physically fit from giving it a go. Finally, I fell in love with the the button roses growing everywhere, the use of recycled tin canisters for potting plants and NO TV! Oh, I also saw a deer, though fleetingly, but sadly, no leopard. Maybe next time.

1. Excellent food: even my wife (who eats so less) ate so much. Narendra bhai and his team cook and serves with humility. Open dining area amidst mountain and icy breeze is so refreshing...
2. Peaceful location: cool 160 km drive from Nainital via Almora. Resort located in the middle of forest. You pass through ups and downs of mountains and along with Kosi & Saryu rivers; makes it more appealing. In-fact you enjoy journeys more than destination in mountains.
3. Adventure activities: Valley crossing, Rappelling, Jungle trail, Rock climbing, Sunset walk etc. in guidance of Nitin & Deepak. I did first three, a first timer so you can imagine the kind of joy I had.
4. Good hosts {Madhu & Madhurima (never asked her name)}, their 3 cats (Browny, Aye-Aye & Musasu) and a number of service men.
5. Access road: the last 6 km of road is an awesome piece of stretch. All in stone, curvy and very steep rise to reach at the level of 7000 feet. Madhur himself came down and drove us till resort.
6. Serene view: of Nanda devi, Trishul etc. Kumayun range of Himalayas from each room. A clear sky gives you majestic panorama. In caves of Patal Bhuvneshwar one can see stalactites and stalagmites also.
We had an eventful time.
I hope it remains so close to raw nature.

We loved this place, we loved the folks running it, we loved the food, and the joy with which we were fed!

We are essentially people who are in love with the Himalayas, and can talk only from that perspective. Folks who prefer slick resorts with round the clock sir-yes-sir bedroom kinda service, frankly this isn't talkin to them at all. No judgement, though; there are all kinds.

Ambika and Madhur feed you what they eat, and they feed you lots and they feed you with love. This is home-cooked, clean, wholesome food. It is no gourmet stuff, and it also ain't the pan-Indian Punjabi grub that you get everywhere today. Their food is tasty without being unduly rich. Ambika pickles and preserves herself, and she cooks a mean mutton dish. 3 square here are 3 solid square.

To top it, A and M are very gentle people, as is everyone else working for them, and very nice company and very genuine hosts.

The place is far, but this is no weekend getaway. The roads right up to their estate are good, barring a few patches, which is more than can be said of most of India. The last bit of road is a little scary, being narrow, paved with stone, and needing to be driven mainly in the first gear. But you're never ever going to fall off it. I was driving, and I loved it.

The cottages are the in middle of a 1000 acre estate, part of which was a tea plantation and the rest is forest where you can just walk walk walk. If you want a guide into the forest, they have one ready, or you are more than welcome to go it by yourself. (Though, when we were there in April, they were gearing up for the peak season setting up some adventure activities.) Or just sit and watch and listen to the amazing variety of birds. A is the resident ornithologist, and you are welcome to her expertise.

Now the killer thing about the place, and we were lucky to get to see it. Our last morning, the sky cleared up completely, and we saw the entire range of snow peaks, a near 180-degree view. We saw 'em before the sun was up, we saw them as the sun was going up and when it was up. Right from Nandadevi to Panchachuli to all the other peaks further east. My personal high points were the orange rays of the sun, as it came up behind them, silhouetting the eastern peaks in fire orange, and the spire of snow continuously blowing from the top of the Nandadevi (courtesy gale force winds there). We spent nearly 4 hours just having tea and watching. Complete peace.

And that’s the thing you go there for, lotsa high quality mountain peace and quiet, where your basic needs are well taken care of, and then you are left alone.

So, yeah, maybe it's not for everyone, but you can’t fault what it is, cause it never aims or claims to be anything else. If you don’t like it, I’d say the fault was mainly in your expectations.

We like your alias ;)

Thank you for writing what you did.

You are absolutely right. Our place and our way of service suits the offbeat traveler. And we do try to convey that on our website, our facebook page, our conversations over the phone and email with potential guests, and any other we can. Your saying the same really helps, as it is a guests' perspective.

Thank you also for your generous feedback. Its uplifting :)

Hope to see you here again sometime soon.
