I'll start by saying the only reason to go to Embilpitiya is to get to Uda Wallawe. The town itself doesn't have anything to offer tourists.
Pavana Resort is reasonably well located, an 8 minute walk from the bus station. There's a large space downstairs that seems to be rented for weddings and a great, clean pool out the back. The rooms aren't anything much to speak of, but the beds were comfortable enough and there was AC. The bathroom was hot and not terribly inviting. The view from the window was of the guy next door and his fairly run down place!
The owner/manager is very attentive (at times a little too much so) but the tour he organised to Uda Wallawe was PERFECT and worth every cent. The truck you go out in was better than any of the others we saw and the driver was almost as good as the guide at spotting the wildlife. Skip the breakfast the hotel offers, however.
If you want to go to Uda Wallawe and just want an overnight stay this place is fine.
