“Reasonable hotel in a frankly awful town”
Reviewed July 14, 2013 via mobile

I'll start by saying the only reason to go to Embilpitiya is to get to Uda Wallawe. The town itself doesn't have anything to offer tourists.

Pavana Resort is reasonably well located, an 8 minute walk from the bus station. There's a large space downstairs that seems to be rented for weddings and a great, clean pool out the back. The rooms aren't anything much to speak of, but the beds were comfortable enough and there was AC. The bathroom was hot and not terribly inviting. The view from the window was of the guy next door and his fairly run down place!

The owner/manager is very attentive (at times a little too much so) but the tour he organised to Uda Wallawe was PERFECT and worth every cent. The truck you go out in was better than any of the others we saw and the driver was almost as good as the guide at spotting the wildlife. Skip the breakfast the hotel offers, however.

If you want to go to Uda Wallawe and just want an overnight stay this place is fine.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your detailed review. Apart from few coastal cities in Sri Lanka together with few others, most other cities are not what someone may consider to be ‘touristy’. But we are lucky and been much appreciated by many of our guests have been located very closer to 2 restaurants, bar, Ayurvedic Massage Centre, Super market, ATM machines, hospital and more importantly to the main bus station. If someone visit Uda Walawe they simply have 2 choices to select, stay near Uda Walawe park area or Embilipitiya town. Many decide on Embilipitiya because of easy access to transportation and shops compared to in Uda Walawe where you are stuck in the middle of jungle in expensive hotels without any close by place to visit and have only to eat expensive hotel food.

We are a city hotel and we never advertise saying that we have a ‘view’, we purposely kept our back garden with lot of privacy to ensure that our guest can have a good quite time near the pool. There are number hotels near Chandrika lake ‘with a view’ but they will be at least 5 times more expensive than our prices.

Despite all that it’s nice to hear that you enjoyed the safari. And like you have correctly mention we cater primarily to the guests visiting national park and we have never failed to impress anyone with the safari. We have got to know from another review of yours that it was the room floor that you felt was not clean. This would have been an rare mishap that any hotel usually encounter. We are sorry about it. Please be rest assured that it will be communicated to the staff at the hotel.

Rooms are small but have all the essentials. Staff were very friendly and helpful and even packed us a little lunch to take on our safari! We had a non AC room and despite the mosquito net, got attacked by mosquitos so I would reccommend an AC room for this matter. They have games you can borrow and a list of walks in the area you can can..also a nice swimming pool (didnt swim though...). Perfect location a short walk up from the bus stop which also means its easy to bus to the Safari Park if you wish :) However, the hotel offers cheap Safaris anyway. Not much going on in Embilipitiya but a good place to stay to get to the park and experience a local little town.

Dear Rosie,

Thank you for your lovely comment and it’s nice to hear you had a great safari and enjoyed your stay with us. As for the mosquito problem, if you had tucked the net under the mattress, this problem should not have happened. We have nets in all our rooms. Plus we have various types of mosquito repellents/solutions that we provide in case they are requires. Usually a net is sufficient and very rarely we get requests for other types of mosquito control. Nevertheless we are very sorry that about the problem. We have now taken one step forward and try to offer the guest any additional mosquito controls on our own. Despite this minor problem, we were glad to hear that you had a nice stay. If you even come back to Sri Lanka, please do stay with us so that you can also explore Sinharaja Rain Forest from our hotel which is just a day excursion.

We stayed one night as part of a round trip in Sri Lanka and the night before safari in Uda Walawe National Park. The hotel is clean and friendly, offers wifi and the staff is very helpful and offered to pack our breakfast at 5am in the morning for us to bring to the park. The city itself is not much to explore and through our driver we managed to find a restaurant that served us a good dinner at night. This can otherwise be tricky if you're traveling on your own as there is not much on offer nearby. There is about a 30 minute drive to the safari park but all in all it was worth the stay instead of the much more expensive safari lodges next to the park. Not to be ruled out, a very friendly little place!

Dear Guest, thank you for your comments. Its nice to hear that you had enjoyed our hospitality and the appreciated our staff. As for the things to do around the area, Embilipitiya is a more popular choice than Uda Walawe because of its a town with many facilities such as restaurants, bars, super market, easy access to transportation etc. But I must admit that Embilipitiya is less "tourist oriented" compared to the southern coastal cities. There are benefits of this as most things are reasonably priced.

Most guests who stay with us tend to do the following in the city. They walk to the close by restaurants, bar to wine and dine. Also we have kept 2 bicycles free of charge for the guests to take a ride in the city, or to visit the nearby famous lake. Or else they tend to go to the Ayurvedic Spa which is located just 100m from our hotel. But by far the most popular activity is to spend some time near the pool, swimming, sun bathing or reading.

We are sorry that you felt that the area did not have much to offer. We will find a way to communicate what activities that can be done in the area to other guests in the future. Thank you again for your valuable comment.

Dear Ishara, Thank you for your lovely comment, also it seems that this was the first time you are giving a review on TripAdvisor, we are glad to see that you picked our hotel to give your first review. It’s always nice to hear that you enjoyed the stay and found our staff very helpful. I have already conveyed this message to them. We have lot of guest who walk in without a prior reservation and they mostly come back again and again. We normally say that ‘if someone stays with us once, they will surely come back’. We always want to enhance facilities in every little way we can to make sure that the guests get the maximum benefit. We are hoping very much to welcome you again at Pavana Resort.

We arrived here late on day 1 and before coming we got the hotel to arrange 2 tours, one to sinharaha rain forest and the other to uda walawe national park. We left hotel around 6am on day 2 and reached rain forest in 2 hours time. We started our trek with the guide suneth who was very knowledgeable. It was unbelievable how he spot things that are so small. We walked for few hours it was an excellent jungle trek and finally around lunch time came the best part of the experience. We took a bath at the waterfall and was an amazing fresh water bath. No matter how tired you are you will be energized after the cold fresh water dip in the waterfall natural pool. Then we went back after a brief snack near the natural pool. It was around 2pm when we came back from rain forest and around 4pm we were back in hotel. What an amazing day. Our first time in rain forest and it was so memorable.

Things got even better next day, when we left for elephant safari at 5:30am and saw lots of elephants, huge birds, buffaloes, crocs and many others. Again it was our first wild life safari and would not have asked for a better day. And all were finished by 10am. We came back and packed and moved to our next place.

Most wonderful thing about this whole journey was the cost. For 2 nights accommodation, it cost just rs 6000 with breakfast and free wifi. Full day van to rain forest was rs 6500 and safari jeep was just rs 4500. We only had to buy tickets at the entrance gates. All the other places we checked were more than double what this hotel charged. Rooms were clean and comfortable, nice clean swimming pool where you can dip in and relax. Rain forest is 2 hours away but cost of transport is less than what you will spend if you stay near the rain forest and you can cover both rain forest and safari in one go. Highly recommended.

Dear Paul, Thank you for your lovely detailed review and despite many having done both the Uda Walawe and Sinharaja tours together you were the first to make a post on tripadvisor about it. You are indeed right, when you based in Embilipitiya, it provides an excellent base to cover both Sinharaja and Uda Walawe National Park. And what’s more, like you have mentioned, guests can make lot of savings by doing so. Another advantage is that Embilipitiya is in the middle of a usual route that tourists take (Ella to a beach in South) , (Kandy to a beach South) or (from a southern beach location to Ella, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya) etc. If not guests have to take a complete de-tour to visit Sinharaja Rain Forest. We have had many guests who simply had the best part of their Sri Lankan trip by doing both these tours at a fraction of the cost that others charge. It’s lovely to hear positive feedback about it. Hope you had a wonderful time here in Sri Lanka and wish you will have a pleasant journey and returned back home safely. We hope that you would visit our country and our small hotel again.

This was an inexpensive basic accommodation very near to Ude Walawe National Park. The rooms were basic but comfortable. The odd bug which didn't bother us, however there was a sign up saying that staff would come and remove anything which did. The staff were very helful helping us with bags etc. Food was tasty, massive breakfast! The pool was brilliant very clean, bit of a sun trap! Our kids are 3 and 7 and we had a great time!

Room Tip: all the same i think

Rooms are simples and clean, AC+fan are provided.
The owner made the effort to build a swimming pool.
It's the perfect night over stop to head to UDA national park, (Don't arrive to early as there is nothing to do around).
For dinner, we went to 1 local eatery where we had really nice local food: Chicken and dhal curry, roti bread, and coconut pancake( don't remember the name) Total $5 for 2pax.

The park is at 30min drive, we paid 5000 for the jeep&driver + 5000 for the entrance (2tourists+1local guide). We decide to do our Safari at the fisrt hour of the day 6am, which was perfect the weather was not too hot, and all the animals were here! Really great safari!

We reach the hotel in less than 2 hours from Tangalle
We drive to Colombo:5hours. on the way we stop to visit a Gem museum, and a tea factory.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your positive feedback. We highly appreciate your feedback about the cleanliness, swimming pool, ease of our hotel to visit Uda Walawe national park. We mainly promote our hotel as ‘value for money’ destination where the focus is very much on providing as much value for the relatively small amount we charge.

I wish to correct couple of points on your review though. For the safari we charge only for the jeep and its less than the figure you had quoted. Also for the tickets you pay directly to the national park entrance which is actually slightly higher than the price you had mention (this you pay to the national park office). I thought of making this note as other guests might get confused.

As for the comment about what to do in the area, most guests arriving early tend to visit the Ayurveda massage center situated very close to our hotel and we have also kept 2 bicycles free of charge for the guests to take a ride around the area which has become a very popular and most guests have really enjoyed the ride towards the paddy field area (good glimpse of rural Sri Lanka). But more than anything most guests actually spend most of their time near the pool sun bathing/reading and taking a nice relaxing swim before heading out to dinner or ordering dinner at the hotel. Further If a guest wishes they can also take the bicycles to see the ‘Lake Chandrika’ which is situated about 30 minutes ride from our hotel.

Thank you again for your comment about our hotel and we hope that you will come back again to our country and stay with us again.
