We paid 250Baht per night for a very small double room (with fan) with shared shower and toilet, but the large communal balcony area overlooking the Mekong made up for the lack of space in our room.
The staff were pleasant enough, but not overwhelmingly friendly. We only ate at the Tonkhong Guest House once and found that our iced coffees had a large number of ants floating in them – this put us off eating there again!
Chiang Khan was a bit of a ghost town when we visited. It is geared up for tourists but we seemed to be pretty much the only ones there. A lot of the restaurants were closed and none that we tried really stood out as somewhere to recommend.
We had hoped to arrange a boat trip down the river to Sang Khom or Nong Khai, but we did not have any luck. In fact we were fairly lucky to manage to catch a local bus. We found travelling by bus in this area (out of season) to be very time consuming – this may be worth bearing in mind if you do not have a lot of time to explore the region.
