My parents bought our tickets a few days before so we knew exactly when we would be going and there was very little waiting around. Our guide was a very well spoken, and witty, youngish British fellow. He said he was a geology student but all I know is he really "made" the experience for us, especially our 7 year old son who hung on his every word, and we were afraid he might be bored.
My parents had gone to Font-de-Gaume on a previous trip and they said that while it was interesting Lascaux was much better, again mainly because of the guide.
If you are in the area you really have to do this. Along with canoeing and our Castelnaud tour it was a highlight of the trip.

I will admit that prior to the tour I was skeptical this was going to be good. To my surprise, the cave was absolutely stunning! It was an exact replica and it did not have a feel of a fake cave at all. It was just missing a smell of a real cave. We arrived there at about 0930 in October and were 3rd in line. We got the tickets for a French tour even though no one in my family speaks French but we had another cave booked for later on so we did not have much choice. The guide, however, gave the tour in both French and English so we got all the information we needed. We did have 2 small children with us ages 4 and 6 and they were interested as well. I highly recommend visiting this cave to everyone.

We were disappointed by not getting in to Font-de-Gaume, so we drove to Lascaux II and were able to get tickets for an English tour starting in about an hour. We went into Montingnac and bought sandwiches and ate them in the park outside Lascaux. Although it is a replica, the tour is very interesting and we thought very worthwhile. The ticket situation at Font-de-Gaume is very difficult. You have to get there around 8:00, wait for the ticket office to open and then come back later in the day for your tour and there is not much to do nearby. Unless your French is very good, it is worthwhile to wait for an English tour. We had a French tour at Rouffiac, and did not get as much out of it.

A very well constructed replica of the cave in an old mine. Excellent attention to detail. The English-language tour was also excellent and drew our attention to details that we would have missed on our own. Definitely not to be missed if you are travelling in this area.

We visited the caves as part of our guided tour holiday, so our tickets were arranged for us. We were taken in two groups for our tour and had a very good guide. The caves were amazing and the story of how they were discovered was very interesting. Even though these are a replica of the original the artwork inside is amazing. There is a shop on site selling a selection of books and gifts. The caves would be unsuitable for people with mobility problems.
