“Dante's experience: from Heaven to Hell”
Reviewed September 22, 2010

We stayed at the Soleil d'or for 2 days to explore Perigord. At first we thought we'd found a special place to stay after a welcoming reception despite our late arrival (we got lost on the way arriving around 9:30PM having previously informed we'd be there by 8). The person at reception asked whether the restaurant would still serve us and the bistro staff were so friendly despite having to stay late. Shown to our rooms (superior) we'd traveled from paradise to purgatory: they were spacious and clean, although the bathroom was dated; so possibly slightly overpriced but nothing that would comprise a nice stay in a hotel with a lovely garden and pool. Hell was to come at the checkout: dropping by early on the morning of our departure to leave the key of one of the 2 rooms we'd occupied (freeing one early with the idea of facilitating the service staff's work while keeping one until the requested check out time for our bags and a fresh up before departing). The person at reception gave us the most frosty reception, not being able to decide whether she wanted us to checkout straight away or not, looking suspicious (she even disappeared for a while telling us only on her return that she'd wanted to check the charges put down for our dogs, a question we surely could have helped with) and starting to question everything including our use of the minibar. Finally after settling a bill of over 500€, we queried that the minibar (3 bottles of water) had been charged twice. No apology there still, all we got was a caricatural shrug of the shoulders: what could she do about it! And thinking that on that same morning, we'd got in mind nice feedback about the restaurant and reception friendliness during our stay !
In conclusion, I would not consider staying there again or recommending it to anyone, there are other hotels of this category in Montignac offering better value for money, and certainly no one deserves to be treated this badly on holiday. I am only too aware that service is not always the strongest asset of french tourism (hey, I am french !) but we'd never seen it quite this bad, and we shiver just thinking what foreign visitors may have thought of it.

We walked through the gilded gates from the parking lot and were impressed by the beautiful grounds and pool. The staff was courteous and helpful.

And then we were brought to our room. Tiny... which we didn't think would be such a big deal cause how much time does one really spend in there, right? Well, apart from tripping on our luggage trying to bathroom which was just slightly irritating, the room was damp and cold. We also had cold to lukewarm water for showering, toilets that didn't flush very well and a bed that went down in the middle. It wasn't flat and it wasn't comfortable. The carpet also looked very worn and I found the carpet in the bathroom to be particularly questionable. After traveling for eight hours, it was definitely disappointing, to say the least.

Breakfast, however, was very generous. We had a basket of bread and pastries, cheese, fruit, yogurt, fruit juice and coffee brought to our room.

I feel like the staff is very well-intentioned and the service is good. However, the hotel is really run down.

Very run down, small cramped rooms with old furniture and very uncomfortable bed, terrible unventilated bathroom. Public rooms better, but not sparkling clean. Breakfast adequate.

I stayed in this hotel for 5 nights with my cousin as part of a larger group. The evening meals were really good, and the hotel situted very well for the Lascaux caves and the Dordogne river.

We stayed here twice this summer first in June and then on the way back in july. We also stayed here last year in July. The area with the park and swimming pool is very nice. The rooms are small and not well kept. We liked to eat lunch in the gourmet restaurant. We came there at 2 pm and there where others eating there. We where in a very impolite way told by the leader of the restaurant in the grey jumpsuit that we could not eat there because they had not been informed earlier. They had plenty of room. They referred us to the bistro, that is low quality, but we left the hotel and found a nice restaurant nearby.

Charming hotel with excellent staff-owners , enriched by "gastronomic" restaurant with excellent food and very attentive service.
On the other hand, our room was disappointing, a bit stuffy , small and an old cloackroom.
Very convenient car parking.

I'll start with the only negative - the reception staff didn't appear to speak much English but then why should they? We got by.

The rooms were well equipped. We requested one double and one twin - the twin turned out to a suite containing one double and the twins but we weren't charged any extra. Spoilt for chocie for beds though.

Nothing truly negative but we didn't eat in. We ate at a less formal place right on the bank of the river in the evening and had a cheaper breakfast at a tea shop near the bridge where the coffee was excellent.
