“Well worth the journey!”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

24.9.13 travelled from Tyneside on a dreay overcast dull day for lunch following recommendation. It was worth the journey. Beautiful surroundings, good choice of options on menu and of drinks. The four of us in our party couldn't fault the quality and the levels of service. Would return and look forward to seeing the results of proposed plans to open up the small bar and bistro area to enhance the the dining area.

Just arrived home after a 2 night break at the R&C and couldn't recommend it highly enough! Food faultless, staff were so accommodating and friendly, nothing was too much trouble for them. The room was beautiful with everything you could ask for. We have been here a couple of times previously but only to dine, so our first stay certainly won't be the last! Thanks for making our short break away so perfect and relaxing, we will certainly recommend to others and look forward to returning soon!

We stayed the night on our way north & we couldn't recommend it highly enough; gorgeous room with lovely interiors, friendly staff, a delicious dinner & all in a beautiful location; what a treat we had- well worth the effort of going a bit further off the A1 for our stop-over. Thank you.

It’s Sunday and we are in North Yorkshire so we make the short hop over the county border to The Rose and Crown for our usual Sunday Lunch, I know it has now changed hands but the cooking and old world elegance if anything as improved. My wife chose chicken parfait followed by roast beef and I had the Blue cheese salad followed by roast lamb we both finished with rhubarb apple crumble. Service and cooking were to the same high standard we have come to expect from this delightful establishment.

Popped in mid ramble, as the weather had taken a turn for the worse. Sat in Bar, having discarded muddy boots at door. Both had the Ploughmans, which was lovely - the Honey Roast Ham was superb, and the date chutney really tasty. Followed this with Rhubarb and Ginger cheesecake, with sticky ginger croutons, which was also a delight. Add in a lovely pint of Black Sheep, and it was the perfect pick me up before heading out to get soaked again.

Will definately return for a more refined eating experience one evening.

food was overpriced, small portions, catered more for restaurant than for bar meals. overall a bit let down as it had a good name. had a meal in a small village a few miles away the next night and it was great.

We spent one night at the Rose and Crown and wished we could have stayed a lot longer. The staff are welcoming and helpful, and the rooms are very clean and well furnished. We ate in the restaurant and the food was of very high quality with a good wine list and great service. The highlight of the night was arriving in the bar to find 17 single malt whiskies to choose from!
