“Great Wedding Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2009

We had our wedding at the hotel this weekend. Myself and my family stayed the night before the wedding and my husband and some of his family where also there the night of the wedding.
The staff were very helpful throughout the occasion.
A group of us ate in the restaurant the night before and had a lovely meal from a very reasonably priced set menu.
The arrangements for the wedding went smoothly and the hotel staff were very helpful in making sure everything was the way we wanted it. The wedding breakfast and the buffet were nice and the hotel staff were very tolerant of the children running about and having fun.
We were also able to enjoy the pool with the children which was lovely

The room was pretty spacious and was well equipped with good toiletries and nice big towels. There were some complimentary waters and nibbles. The restaurant was quite good and offered a good of dishes. The breakfast was excellant with plenty of choice. The hotel was originally a Moat House and the decor and the rooms reflected it.We were lucky enough to be upgraded to an executive room.It was a nice but not what I would call executive.

I booked two twin executive rooms for one night some months before arrival. The hotel (a 70's style, low lying concrete and glass building a few miles out of Cambridge) had registered the booking as one double room for two nights. Booking was done by telephone, not over the internet so although I had a booking reference, it was useless as there was no evidence of what had been booked. The mix-up was resolved in silence by the staff who persisted in offering my friend and I a double. I said I had booked a twin so wanted a twin. The room was dark, dingy, looked out over air con units and did not have the facilities I would expect - no bath robes, no fridge and not even a bin in the room, only a tiddly thing in the bathroom.
Others in our party had similar problems. Some had bath robes, some didn't. Some had one rather than two. Some had Pringles and a Txix, some didn't. Some had bottled water, some didn't ......... and we all had the same room types, i.e. 'executive'.
Breakfast was good, hot and cold buffet style with the usual stuff. The bar drinks were very expensive, £4.40 for a single G&T, £4.50 for a bottle of cider. The hotel didn't look that clean; there is a lot of glass inside and it was heavily finger printed, there were dustwebs up the stairs and the smoking verandah was a mass of tin cans and cigarette ends at 8am the next morning ..... which were still there at gone 10am.
The gold course looked nice for those who play but other than for that purpose, I would not recommend staying in the hotel.

Stayed one night following an awful B&B experience else where.
Lovely staff ~~Nice clean room with a very comfy clean bed. Loads of hot water & good shower.
All you could eat breakfast was delicious & we ate over looking the beautiful golf course.
We would stay here again ~ & is well located for Duxford Air field & surrounding area.

I made the mistake of booking the hotel before checking the reviews on trip advisor, had I of done so before I would not have booked. I booked the 2 night getaway package which included breakfast and dinner on one night, which was really not worth £179.

I rate the rooms at 2* quality for the following reasons:
* Outdated Small Bathroom - The shower/bath system is 1980's (old white shower curtain, old white mixer system, incorrect temp). The mixer taps deserve special mention because they didn't actually mix any water!

*Main Bedroom - Of a decent size however the following items suggested that it was actually a 2 star room.
1) Iron - Timer based, burnt soleplate (actually damaged my shirt!)
2) Air Conditioning - Not present
3) Mini Bar - Not present (rooms are supplied with complimentary 'warm' bottled water).
4) TV - Small, poorly presented (hammered on to the wall) LCD with a few channels (i.e. not freeview/sky as expected). No welcome message / facilities guide / etc.
5) Pillows - No pillow choice (as expected in a 4*)
6) Sound insulation - POOR. This is because the thin walls let in the sound of slamming doors / noisy neighbours.
7) Room Safe - None

I rate the service at 2/3* for the following reasons:
1) Porter Service – None
2) Shuttle Service - None
3) Reception Staff - Prone to bickering over petty issues such as checking out 10 mins late etc.
4) Evening Dinner Service - Staff friendly, wine prices were VERY EXPENSIVE (charged £16 for a £3 bottle!). The 3 course dinner included in the rate carries an insufficient £25 per head budget and represented poor value.
5) Breakfast Service - Staff indifferent. Fruit, Cereal and pastry choice was poor. Breakfast is served from 6am -10am but at 10:03am ALL the breakfast was cleared away without guests being informed.

I rate the grounds at 2/3* for the following reasons:
1) Golf Course – Not much use if you don’t play golf or have £25 to play
2) Spa – Not much use if you don’t know where it is or carry cash as it’s a cash only service
3) Lobby – Appears to be a lobby from a 2* hotel
4) Bar - Looked nice (albeit business customer focused)
5) Car Park – Pretty good.

Overall this hotel is VERY poor in comparison to a ‘real’ 4* hotel Holiday Inn / Crowne Plaza brand. If you are looking for a 4 star then don't look at Menzies Cambridge Hotel and Golf Club!

I stayed for two nights and found the service slow, the food over priced and the rooms basic. Overall i felt that the hotel was not living up to its potential. When I checked in I was not asked for a paper so assumed they didn't supply them. When I went to the bar and tried to charge a drink to my room I couldn't because I had not asked to be able to do so at reception. When my colleagues and I ate in the evening the service was very slow, the food was alright but over priced. Possibly this was because there was a wedding going on and all the staff were working on that but shouldn't they get extra staff in?
