Stopped here in Feb 2014, booked a weekend getaway deal which included dinner on one night out of the two we stayed. Nice clean and quiet ground floor room with comfy bed and an adequate bathroom. The leisure centre is good with a decent sized pool where you can get a reasonable swim, the sauna is a bit compact if more than 3 people use it you need to be good friends!! steam room also small and quite grubby. The bar area is on the first floor with the restaurant on the ground floor which is a strange layout. Bar prices are average for this kind of hotel , decent selection of drinks on offer so should suit most people, bar staff were friendly and efficient. We ate in the hotel on two evenings, I had onion soup for starter and this was OK ,I chose salmon fillet with new potatoes and salad for main course . It was awful, the salmon had been deep fried as had the potatoes to warm them up ! the salad at least hadn't been fried but had no dressing. For dessert I went for fruit salad as I mistakenly thought they couldn't ruin that . I was wrong...unripe bits of various melon in a tall sundae dish topped with a squirt of synthetic cream. The wife had chicken for her main dish which was so dry it could have been used for blotting paper, for dessert she went for a crème brulee which was in reality a custard made very thickly from custard powder with a bit of sugar blow torched on the top. We should have known better but visited the restaurant a second time in the belief it had to get better and maybe we had chosen badly..........Wrong it got worse when neither of us could eat our main courses , obviously we complained and didn't pay for them. The food including breakfast is Grimm and that's not a fairy tale!!. When we talked to the maître de she told us they had a new chef.....Our view was they just cant cook. This is not what we expect from Menzies having stayed in a number of their properties. So to sum up our view is its a decent hotel if you stay on a room only basis or if they get the food issues sorted out.

Dear stevesid, thanks for your review and pleased that overall you enjoyed your time with us. I have shared your comments regarding your meal with the Head Chef and his team and please accept my apology if anything was substandard - this is certainly not the norm and we have had some really good feedback recently about our food quality. We don't have a new chef either, but did have to get a temporary chef for a couple of shifts recently as our normal sous chef was unfortunately taken very poorly and has been in intensive care - hopefully now on the road to recovery.

All our food is freshly prepared and we certainly only fry food items advertised as that (not salmon?)

I do hope we can welcome you back to the hotel again in the future.

Regards

Shaun

Great hotel in easy reach of the City. Staff really friendly from the reception team to the restaurant and cleaning staff. Facilities excellent - pool, gym, sauna and spa all free to use when you stay. We could choose our preference of which part of the hotel we wanted to stay in, so chose the rear of the hotel away from the A14....lovely and quiet. Rooms warm, clean and the bed was so big and comfy.

Didn't use the golf facilities this time, but would definitely stay again, so hubby may try them next time.

The only thing that could have let the stay down was the evening meal. It was included in the price of our stay - two nights B&B and one evening meal. If we had paid the full price we would have been little a disappointed - I had a burger which was very dry and the wedges were lukewarm, nothing serious but as it was free, it was 'okay'. Having said that, the breakfasts were excellent and plentiful buffet style so you could have as much or as little as you wanted of cereal, toast, full English, pastries, fruit, yogurts etc. Would definitely stay again!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel away from the A14.

This is the 2nd time we have stayed here for the FAB Mega Jam. When we where told it was going to be held here again we where overjoyed. The hotel, staff, food and service are excellent. Nothing is to much trouble. The rooms are very comfortable and excellent clean bedding and towels (changed everyday), the bathroom is on the tiny side and the shower on the Sunday didn't have a lot of power (but it didn't spoil our stay). The food is wonderful but drinks are on the pricey side. There is only 1 annoying thing and that is children are charged at adult prices from the age of 12. Not very fair and they are certainly not adults. I maybe could understand when they get to 16 but not at 12.

Dear Maggie W, great to see that you had a fab time with us and thank you for sharing your experience. Sorry about the spa, we have had some technical issues with the chemical dosing system and when the levels are not safe we unfortunately only have one option but to close the spa bath.

I do hope we can welcome you again in the future.

Just wanted to let you know our night away last Saturday was great thank you.
Your hotel was great value for the price. All the facilities were clean and working and al the staff helpful and efficient.
We had dinner and breakfast both which were hot and fresh and, most importantly, a well stocked breakfast!
Had a lovely swim and steam just unfortunate the Jacuzzi was out of service.

Dear lisa o, thanks for sharing your stay and I was so pleased you had a great time with us and found the value for money so pleasing.

Sorry about the Jacuzzi, we have had some technical issues with the chemical dosing and it is currently not safe, so unfortunately we had to close it.

We do hope that you will return again in the future, a warm welcome always awaits.

Shaun
