“Staff good but everything else disappointing unfortunately.”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We arrived late on a busy Saturday evening, carpark very full. Check in was fine, very friendly. The walk to room was a bit depressing, very worn doors to the rooms and gloomy corridors. The room was ok but wardrobe door very scratched (not a renovated room?) and a bit dated but clean. Bed quite comfortable. Bathroom was small, clean but old with an awful hairdryer!
The room had an interconnected door which allowed the tv noise from next door to invade our space until at least 1am. At 6.45am next door's alarm clock went off and for the next hour, every 5 mins it repeated. I phoned reception but the alarm continued until the room was vacated at 8am.
Breakfast room was very busy at 9am. The waitress was very pleasant but stressed because not enough staff. A long queue at the self service area, no orange juice and no plates. The juice was replenished and very cold plates bought out for the hot beakfast. Poached eggs (luke warm)were the only available eggs - scrambled eggs bought out later. After queuing to get the food by the time we got it to the table it was cold. Coffee took a long time to arrive and no milk - we got some in a glass. Poor choice of pastries available - leftovers. Breakfast was overall very disappointing.
Not a relaxing stay and we won't return.

Thanks for your review and I was sorry to read of your disappointments and I'm sorry the occupants next door seemingly used a "snooze" on their alarm which was so loud it kept you awake.

I have shared your comments regarding breakfast, as you have not identified when you stayed it is difficult for me to comment, but reassure you that generally we get great feedback albeit Sunday mornings are very busy as most guests take advantage of the later service times which causes a "peak" at around 10am.

The Hotels bedrooms and corridors are benefiting a refurbishment at present which will be completed early next year and this would address your comments regarding worn doors and the bedroom areas.

We do hope you would consider staying again in the future and to this note I would be happy to oversee your next reservation personally if you were to make contact directly with me at the hotel.

Kind regards

Shaun

Arrived at the hotel Saturday afternoon and was checked in swiftly.

Handy for bus into Cambridge and has a Tesco on the doorstep.

Rooms had recently been renovated but not bathrooms.

Breakfast wasn't fantastic and there were large queues for the cooked bit, get there early!

Overall decent value in what is an expensive city to stay in especially when graduation ceremonies are taking place.

I went to Cambridge at short notice with this as my third choice hoping to get a cancellation at one of the others. They were still fully booked when I got there so I had my fingers crossed with this one. I shouldn't have worried.
The welcome was excellent from the friendly reception staff. The price was better than some of the so called budget chains. Breakfast for two was only a tenner more than room only and was a full self service buffet ranging from continental to full English.
It's about 8 miles from the centre of Cambridge but buses run every 20 minutes during the day and take roughly 20 minutes to get to the city centre so it's not worth the hassle of driving & parking. A dayrider ticket was cheaper than a single and the hotel can supply a timetable and city centre map. Both were really useful!
The rooms are pretty standard as most hotels are these days. The bed was huge. The room and bathroom were very clean.
Internet was free but they could do with adding a few repeaters. My laptop was fine but my smartphone struggled to connect.
TV only had a few channels. I don't know what freeview is like in the area but surely hotels can afford freesat these days?
I think they say something about the road noise on the hotel website but it wasn't even bad outside on the car park. The hotel is just off the A14 which isn't a motorway but is a really busy dual carriageway.
The room was really warm and I only realised on the second night that the radiator thermostat was set to full.
I'd recommend this hotel to anyone.

We recently held our biannual conference at the Menzies Hotel in Cambridge. There was a lot of work to put into the conference to make sure that it ran smoothly. It would not have been the same if we had not had the great support and help from the conference staff and the general hotel staff. Any request we had was answered straight away, we never had to look far to find someone to help us. It's always key to have a hotel that is on the ball in order for the conference to run as it should. I can't thank the staff enough. We also had great feed back from the delegates. The food was lovely, especially the lunch that was provided over the two days. No complaints from me.

Despite some bad reviews we were very pleased with our D,B&B overnight.
On arrival we found hotel reception clean and tidy. Swiftly dealt with at check in and our newly refurbished double room was very clean and well appointed.
The bar area was ok but not many chairs considering how large the hotel was.
We felt the dinner was very tasty and well presented, the waiting staff efficient and courteous.
However, the breakfast service was not to the same high standard - our waiter gave an impersonal service and failed to clean up the tea and coffee he had spilt over our table. (Another staff member soon rectified this upon asking) he also didn't explain anything to do with breakfast at all. Breakfast was good with reasonable choice and DIY toast.
Would recommend and will stay again in future.

Room Tip: the refurbished rooms are excellent!

21/10/12 - We have just visited the Menzies Hotel Cambridge as a small group of friends who saved up for a much deserved break. The husbands wanted to play golf whilst us girlies wished to pamper ourselves in the spa. Upon arriving we soon realised that the location of the hotel made it more of a motel with its situation right next to the motorway so not quite as 'peaceful' as its website states!

We were lucky and had one of the recently modernised bedrooms (however bathroom remained dated) but unfortunately our friends had dark and dingy rooms with dated decor. The biggest disappointment was the spa. It's basically a hotel with a pool, gym and two small dated treatment rooms which are hired out to members of the public with membership as well as hotel guests. Whilst having a facial you can hear kids screaming in the pool and people talking in the changing rooms so its difficult to relax. The hotel bar and restaurant were very modern and whilst the staff were friendly the actual service level and food (except for breakfast which was good) has great room for improvement.

If you are looking for a hotel for a business trip I'm sure this hotel will suit you to put your head down for the night but if you are looking for a nice romantic weekend away in a nice four star hotel, we wouldn't recommend this hotel. It's more like 3 star.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a modern room away from the car park and motorway side
