This was a truely fantastic stay we had here on our QCS walk . Take a soak in the spa. make sure you get a unit at the top with view over the bay.
We had a great unit with plenty of space for all eight of us. We ahd dinner at the restaurant and that was good value for money too

We stayed at Punga cove as part of pre-booked accommodation while tramping the Queen Charlotte track. Location and rooms were great. Unfortunately the service and food at their restaurant were terrible! They were informed well in advance that I am a vegetarian, and they were aware of it when we booked in. Very little/no effort was done to accommodate me. The set 3 course meal was changed to a 2 course meal for me with no option of a starter. For the main meal the meat was simply removed from the stir fry. I was left with tasteless noodles and overcooked vegetables. My husband had a very disappointing seafood chowder and only ate the meat on the stir fry. I do not think the waiter received any form of training....... The bar at the jetty, where we had lunch was great and it is a pitty that they do not keep it open for a dinner option. The other restaurants along the track (Furneaux and Lochmara lodge) were excellent although they are more remotely located than Punga cove.

My wife, her parents, our 13 month old daughter and I stayed here for two nights to attend my wife's brother's wedding. The location was a little difficult to get to as we had to go from Wellington to Picton and then a water taxi to Punga but being surrounded by trees and hearing the sounds of nature again was relaxing, or as relaxing as a wedding can be.

We actually stayed in the Champagne Suite which had 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and a loft. It was a little cramped but we were mainly there for the views (as well as the wedding). To get to the Suite we had to walk up the hill which provided nice views of the cove. There were a lot of secadas everywhere as well.

At the main lobby, there is a laundry facility which we used which is just a wash and a dryer but this being our second week of travelling with a 13 month old, we were glad it was available. There was a bar at the bottom of the cove next to the dock which served some food. The pizza was actually good. The restaurant at the top of the cove we only tried for breakfast and the French Toast hit the spot. As this was a wedding, the dinner was pre-set and there was nothing to complain about. From some of the reviews, I was expecting far worse.

All in all, it was a nice place to visit but after coming from Fiji, most of my happy memories from this most recent trip still center around the resort we stayed at there.

I had been to a wedding at Punga Cove about 13 years ago and had really great memories of a "Fiji' in the Sounds experience. Now with 2 kids and husband in tow, we ventured back for a 3 night get away. We choose the Champagne Chalet as it had two bedrooms and a loft. The chalet was lovely, tastefully decorated, fantastic view of the cove, a large balcony with umbrella and no insects! The Chalet had it's own large spa bath and a kitchenette of sorts. A microwave oven, toaster and electric frying pan was all we had for cooking. I would take a camp stove next time too. We self catered most of the time - luckily as the restaurant was over the top expensive. $55 per adult and $30 per child for a buffet dinner. We were the only one's in the restaurant on a Saturday night! The bar/cafe on the water was great. The best pizza I've had this year.
There was lot's to do as a family. Kids enjoyed the table tennis and catching blue cod and spotties from the wharf. Bush walks abound. April was a bit too cold for a dip in the sea.
Yes, I would recommend Punga Cove resort and yes I would go back.

Room Tip: Stay at least two nights if you are staying in the Champagne Chalet

We stayed here while walking the Queen Charlotte track in April. The location is terrific, the bar on the jetty is great and the accommodation was very comfortable. However, the meal we had in the restaurant was one of the worst anyone in our party had ever experienced. The food was pretty terrible, but the atrocious service was what really blighted the experience. It was awful in every way. It was slow, inattentive and totally contemptuous of the customer. Worst of all, no dish matched its description on the menu and we were served a different wine from the one we ordered (even though we were billed for it). Based on our experience, you should either eat at the bar (which seemed to serve good pizzas and fish and chips) or stay somewhere else.

We are devastated and disappointed to read your Trip Advisor report. Clearly, we want to address this whole instance. Perhaps you could email to our personal address RGEFaulkner@xtra.co.nz in order that we can be specific in handling this occurence.

There is absolutely no excuse for the menu not to be delivered as described and should there have been any problem, this should be communicated before service.

It is well known we have a superb winelist with a large selection from which to choose. We ensure that all these wines are in stock. Again, our staff should have immediately acknowledged the error and made a correction.

Be assured this will be addressed at our next staff meeting.

We stayed 2 nights at Punga Cove (a little dubious after reading the other reviews here) - and we loved every minute. We opted for the double backpackers room right at the top of the hill and steps to the restaurant. The room was very basic and comfortable, and we slept soundly after slogging it out on the Queen Charlotte Track, imbibing from the great selection of local wines, and soaking in the hot tub. Note: this is the only resort that we stayed at on the track that had a hot tub availalble for all guests at no extra charge - and our tired bods appreciated such thoughtfulness!

The owners Beverly and Ralph are charming hosts. Well-traveled and down-to-earth we had a lovely time chatting with them in the boathouse cafe and looking out at the changing weather across the Cove.

The restaurant was lovely. Our server was cheerful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. We also had several meals in the cafe and they were very good too.

We were looking for comfort, value and good service and we found all 3. We were not expecting or looking for 5 star hotel amenities while hiking the Queen Charlotte Track - but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Punga Cove and would recommend this as a place to stay.

We hiked into Punga Cove on our QCT walk and at first thought we had stepped back to the 70s. The whole place looks tired and we climbed the hill to our A frame with some trepidation. However, the accommodation although old and tired looking on the outside has obviously been refurbished with new bathrooms, light fittings and a comfortable bed ( which was really all we wanted). The sloping walls of the A frame got the better of us on a number of occasions when we stood up and bumped our heads. The steps and paths can be quite tricky in the wet so take care. A couple of the stairs to our unit has wonky boards. Our balcony was small but had magnificent views of the Sounds and even though the weather wasn't kind we managed to sit outside and enjoy the evening light on the water. The sandflies were viscous but that's not anyone's fault. We had plenty of repellent so they didn't bother us too much. We though the food in the restaurant quite expensive ( the highest prices we found anywhere on the track) but we had an outstanding meal with great food, huge servings and great New Zealand wines. I ordered venison which was cooked to perfection and hubby had to eat half as the serving was so larrge. The sethoroughly pod and we thoroughly enjoyed the meals we had although I thought $20 a head for a simple continental breakkfast buffet was a bit OTT. The offer of a packed lunch of two small rolls, a piece of fruit and boxed drink for $18 was ridiculous so we declined. It seems that many places along the track charge ridiculous prices simply because they can! The $8 charged to do one small load of washing and drying also seemed somewhat excessive to us but I supposed we were a captive audience. There aren't a lot of accommodation options at Punga Cove so if we returned we would stay again but only because of the lack of alternatives. I guess the owners know that.
