“Ideal resting place on the Queen Charlotte Track”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

Blue Water Lodge was the venue of my first night's sleep on the 4 day hike on the Queen Charlotte Track. I was the only guest that night, and had a wonderful room with outstanding views. The food was excellent. Rod was really interesting, friendly, and helpful, and is passionate about and highly committed to the environment; it is quite apparent that he really loves the area and wants his guests to love it too. A young French lady was helping him with the work when I was there, and I was delighted that she and Rod ate dinner with me almost like we were a family. I found this particularly enjoyable.

Of four places where we stayed in the course of walking the Queen Charlotte track, Blue Water Lodge stood out as the one in which we had the most enjoyable time. Our room - in a house built by our host - had a spectacular view over the inlet. The welcoming cup of tea on our foot-weary arrival, three course evening dinner and breakfast next morning were all prepared with care and thought, and Rod's engaging hospitality and conversation combined to lift this place out of the ordinary. Definitely recommended.

We arrived here after a couple of hours hiking. Rob met us and offered us some refreshments. It felt like coming home.

The place is located with a very nice view of the bay with amazing sunsets. Our photos from our room are spectacular.

The dinner which is cooked for you is very good, a three course dinner. We got scallops and some shellfish for starter and a very nice chicken for main course to finish of with a carrot cake. We bought a bottle of wine and in the end we went to that wineyard to buy the same wine to bring home as a memory of the stay.

Rob is a great host, with interesting stories about life. I just wished we had stayed for a little longer to get to know the place and Rob a little more.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with the view. It is a amazing.

We were lucky enough to have the lodge to ourselves for the night and Rod managed the perfect balance of providing good food and good conversation and also giving us the space to enjoy the lodge on our own. Small personal lodges like this one seem to be all too rare in the Sounds, but I recommend jumping at this lodge if you find it available.

By Rod's own admission he can sometimes be a little slack on receiving and returning phone calls, but he will always follow up on emails. Once at the lodge, enjoy the home baked bread, a very comfy bed, great shower and evenings with Gwenda and Manfred - the resident wekas.

Good value for money. Perfect hideout on a high ground away from the usual accommodations near the endeavor inlet area. Good sound view. My family of 4 only meet another couple then. Had a great chat and knowing one another over our meals in this cosy house. Accommodation is good value for money in my opinion. Only setback is the cost of the dinner. Cost about $50 per pax. Meal includes entrees (scallops), mains is wild pig(the only time in my entire trip which i ate wild pig) and a desert to go with. Host also had 3 dogs. They are really strong dogs and 1 of them found my socks that was stolen by a weka! Good job!

Our first choice was booked out so we ended up at Blur Water Lodge. What good luck! The 98 stairs were a challenge but Rod was waiting at to top of the steps with a cold beer. After a long days walking on a hot and sunny day it was like coming home only better - someone else was doing the cooking. We sat out on the balcony enjoying the spectacular views of the Sounds and had a few chilled Marlborough wines. Dinner was a wonderful home cooked affair with plenty to go round. Scallops, lamb, chicken, salad, veggies and I believe there was desert but we were way too full. More wines on the balcony as the skies darkened and then into the comfortable lounge to chat and have a nightcap. The rooms were like home - nothing fancy but everything you need. The views from the bedroom, like te balcony, we're spectacular. Rod left us to it in the evening and we felt as though we were at home. It was hard to contemplate leaving. We opted out of the offered cooked breakfast being still too full from the previous nights dinner and settled on a spread of locally produced honey and preserves, toast, yoghurt, cereal and fruit.
Rod made us some awesome sandwiches to take in the walk and then we had no excuse to stay. What a great place!! Tip: ask for the en-suite room and don't draw the curtains.

We stayed here after the first of 4 days hiking on the Queen Charlotte Track. When we arrived at the sign, we were taken aback by the 98 steep steps up to the lodge (yes, we counted!) from the trail. But it was so worth it! Expansive views of the Marlborough Sounds in several directions from the wrap around deck. Our host, Rod, is friendly and fascinating: a true adventurer and free spirit. He's also a master in the kitchen; giving us scallops he dived for that same day, fresh local lamb, fresh eggs from his neighbor's chickens, and more. Our bedroom was not fancy, but it was clean, very comfortable and private. And the view from our window there-- spectacular! We were totally spoiled and it was great!
