Our first choice was booked out so we ended up at Blur Water Lodge. What good luck! The 98 stairs were a challenge but Rod was waiting at to top of the steps with a cold beer. After a long days walking on a hot and sunny day it was like coming home only better - someone else was doing the cooking. We sat out on the balcony enjoying the spectacular views of the Sounds and had a few chilled Marlborough wines. Dinner was a wonderful home cooked affair with plenty to go round. Scallops, lamb, chicken, salad, veggies and I believe there was desert but we were way too full. More wines on the balcony as the skies darkened and then into the comfortable lounge to chat and have a nightcap. The rooms were like home - nothing fancy but everything you need. The views from the bedroom, like te balcony, we're spectacular. Rod left us to it in the evening and we felt as though we were at home. It was hard to contemplate leaving. We opted out of the offered cooked breakfast being still too full from the previous nights dinner and settled on a spread of locally produced honey and preserves, toast, yoghurt, cereal and fruit.
Rod made us some awesome sandwiches to take in the walk and then we had no excuse to stay. What a great place!! Tip: ask for the en-suite room and don't draw the curtains.

We stayed here after the first of 4 days hiking on the Queen Charlotte Track. When we arrived at the sign, we were taken aback by the 98 steep steps up to the lodge (yes, we counted!) from the trail. But it was so worth it! Expansive views of the Marlborough Sounds in several directions from the wrap around deck. Our host, Rod, is friendly and fascinating: a true adventurer and free spirit. He's also a master in the kitchen; giving us scallops he dived for that same day, fresh local lamb, fresh eggs from his neighbor's chickens, and more. Our bedroom was not fancy, but it was clean, very comfortable and private. And the view from our window there-- spectacular! We were totally spoiled and it was great!

We stayed at Blue water lodge for one night while doing the Queen Charlotte walkway. please don't be put off by the steep steps up to the house - believe me the view is worth it when you get there. we really enjoyed the company of our host Rod who is a real "salt of the earth kiwi bloke". He's got a rgreat sense of humour and lots of good stories and your stay with him will be a good one. the views from the upstairs bedroom are sensational and the food - especially the scollops was delicious.
