“Couldn't Have Been Better!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2014

My 3 generation family have just spent 3 days at Mahana Lodge to celebrate my 70th birthday. Words like amazing, perfect, terrific, fabulous etc kept being repeated. The location is special but even more special are hosts Ann and John. They couldn't have been more welcoming, friendly, helpful, caring, etc [I could go on!]. Ann's meals are top restaurant style [absolutely delicious] and John's waitering would put many a professional to shame. I am indebted to them both for being the icing on the cake of my celebrations.

Staying at Mahana Lodge was a highlight during our walk on the Queen Charlotte Track. After torrential rain what a warm greeting we received. The accom is lovely and tea and coffee and afternoon included was a welcome surprise. Ann and John provided a delicious meal and lovely wines. A great conclusion to an excellent day.

Spent our second night on the QCT at Mahana Lodge and it was the absolute highlight of our entire 4 night/5 day experience. John and Ann were extremely welcoming hosts who really seem to care about their guests.

The accommodation itself is four rooms arranged around a communal kitchen/lounge and is very comfortable. The kitchen is not available to cook an evening meal for fear of disturbing other guests but is used to prepare breakfast from the supplies provided which include many items from their own organic plot. There also appears to be one other room in a separate building.

Dinner is a communal affair in the homestead conservatory and, again, the vegetable and salad items come from the property and the bread and desert were homemade (and delicious).

You can visit the organic garden and there is also a glow worm grotto at the rear of the property which is a magical experience after dark.

But what really makes the property is the hosts. You can tell that they really enjoy doing what they do and are genuinely interested in the welfare of their guests. If you have a chance to stay at Mahana Lodge, take it.

Our cycling of the queen charlotte trail was cancelled because of heavy rain but we chose to drive out and stay here anyway, and we are so pleased we did. The drive out is very slow (2 hours from the point you turn off the main road) but it's also beautiful and very enjoyable if you're not in a hurry. There is a small car park above the lodge (about a ten minute walk along a gravel path).
The facilities in the accommodation are superb, coffee and tea facilities fridge/freezer for storing your food, home made brownies then, for breakfast a selection of bread, jam, cereals and fresh eggs to cook whichever way you want. A word of warning - the breakfast supplies are shared among all the rooms - get up late and there might not be so much left!
We borrowed the sit-on kayaks which we've never used before and had some fun paddling around the cove (it was very windy so we didn't risk going too far).
We also opted for the evening meal (I'm not sure there are many alternatives - the kitchen facilities are not available for cooking evening meals it seems) and it was very nice. It was a communal table for all the guests (4 couples in our case). The menu was based on whatever was currently available from their garden and had a fairly small set of choices (understandable) but they were also very willing to work to accommodate special requirements.
Overall, a great place to stay with very welcoming hosts.

We are very glad you enjoyed your time at Mahana even though your cycle trip had to be cancelled because of the weather. We do our best to make our guests feel welcome and as we both enjoy cooking, it is always a pleasure to cook for you.

However, we would like to point out to future guests, that we do not recommend driving to Mahana as the road is very slow and winding and not always in good repair. Also it is a 10 - 15 minute walk from road end to the Lodge down quite a steep hill (and up again in the morning!). If you have heavy or awkward luggage it is not a good option as it has to be carried by hand. Catching a water taxi from Picton is a great deal easier as the water taxis come right to our wharf where we will meet you and help with your luggage.

We hope our future guests enjoy themselves at Mahana as much as you did, but remember if you are coming by car, you will need to have luggage which can be easily carried.

My family and I were hiking the Queen Charlotte Trail. As luck would have it, it rained heavily. When we arrived at the Mahana, we were greeted warmly. Literally. The lodge fireplace was lit and our hosts helped settle us in and dry us out.

This is a great place to stay and the hosts are on top of all aspects of the lodge.

It was the attention to detail, the wonderfully warm welcome, the feeling that we could have been long lost relatives sharing a meal in the conservatory that won us over. From a very welcome introduction to our lodge, complete with cosy log fire, offer to launder our damp clothes, home-made brownies and little bottle of champers, an umbrella for our short walk for our meal and the wonderful conservatory with hanging baskets of delicate fuschias, orchids and other flowering plants, John and Ann put us at ease as they served a scrumptious meal, including freshly picked salad, with local wines. Advice about the track given in a very friendly, relaxed setting. Breakfast the next morning was delicious as well, with home-made marmalades and jams and preserves. Ann packed a super-sized sandwich in our lunch, with freshly baked muffin. They looked after us so well. Thank you to Ann and John. The best lodge we experienced within both the Queen Charlotte and Routeburn Tracks.
