Mahana Lodge

It was the attention to detail, the wonderfully warm welcome, the feeling that we could have been long lost relatives sharing a meal in the conservatory that won us over. From a very welcome introduction to our lodge, complete with cosy log fire, offer to launder our damp clothes, home-made brownies and little bottle of champers, an umbrella for our short walk for our meal and the wonderful conservatory with hanging baskets of delicate fuschias, orchids and other flowering plants, John and Ann put us at ease as they served a scrumptious meal, including freshly picked salad, with local wines. Advice about the track given in a very friendly, relaxed setting. Breakfast the next morning was delicious as well, with home-made marmalades and jams and preserves. Ann packed a super-sized sandwich in our lunch, with freshly baked muffin. They looked after us so well. Thank you to Ann and John. The best lodge we experienced within both the Queen Charlotte and Routeburn Tracks.

Great quite lodge with beautiful view and atmosphere. It is within the queen charlotte track, the hosts give you all the information you need about the track. We also had a nice dinner that is set by the hosts (with additional cost) and organized as a family dinner, which was nice to talk and meet new people, hear tips etc.

Room Tip: There are front or back rooms...

Arrived to a very warm welcome at this beautiful lodge surrounded by flowers to enjoy an excellent coffee and homemade cake after a hard days hiking. Our room was lovely and clean with a deck overlooking the stunning bay and surrounded by native cabbage trees. Delicious homemade gourmet dinner served up by the lovely owners who looked after us so well. I will definately be back :)

Our hosts, John and Ann, made our stay at the Mahana one of the highlights of our NZ vacation. We stayed for two nights and would have been happy to stay longer. The grounds are beautiful and a visit to John's vegetable garden is a must. The set-up at the Mahana is unlike any we have experienced. The "lodge" is separate from the house John and Ann live in. It has four rooms, one on each corner. The center of the lodge is communal space, with a kitchen, dining table and living room area. This space looks out at the bay, as do the two front-facing guest rooms. Our room was a front facing room and while it felt a bit small it was very comfortable and we enjoyed being able to sit on the porch and enjoy the view. Ann and John bring up a tray of breakfast items each evening, so that guests can set their own schedule as to when they get up and eat. Breakfast items were varied and plentiful and included home made yogurt and breads as well as eggs one can cook, cereals and fruits. Dinners were the highlight of our stay, from the wonderful salads made with choice selections from John's garden, to the home made breads baked by Ann, and entrees of fresh smoked salmon prepared by John. Delicious. Dinner is served in a beautiful room filled with flowering plants.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the bay then be sure to book a front-facing room. Both front-facing rooms hav...

We spent 5 wonderful nights at the Mahana Lodge in October. The lodge is spacious with a very homey atmosphere. We especially enjoyed being able to take day walks on the beautiful Queen Charlotte Track. John was extremely helpful in assisting us in planning our walks. His knowledge and love of the area made our stay at the lodge very enjoyable. Ann’s dinners are five star gourmet meals. We felt very pampered when we sat down for dinner each evening. John and Ann are the perfect hosts in a most beautiful setting. If you want the best- stay at the Mahana Lodge.

A one night stay at Mahana whilst doing the full QCT hike was a great experience. The hospitality, personal touch from the welcome on our arrival to the exceptionally good meals and beautifully laid out "rooms with a view" were such a delight. It was a privilege to stay in this special place.
