“Great Weekend”
Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

Just got back from our overnight stay at Spillars. A friendly welcome and hosts were perfect. Our room was comfortable and our breakfast was lovely. A walk around the farm and lake in the morning and a visit to the newly born piglets! A great location for our visit to the Landrover off road centre nearby. Thank you very much for the warm welcome and we would highly recommend.

Just got back from a a brilliant weekend in Cassies cottage. My husband was attending the River Cottage cheese making course and the cottage was just 10 minutes away. We were given a warm welcome by Celia the cat the moment we got out the car and then By Keith, Bridget and Merrick their dog. The cottage is really well thought out, comfortable yet practical as we had our dog with us it was easy to keep clean. Open plan with a cosy lounge and stove, good size dining area and a really well equiped kitchen, which is great for foodies who want to try cooking some of the produce from the farm or on offer locally. The bedroom is a good size and the bed has snuggle down pillows for a very comfortable nights sleep. There were fluffy toed chickens and little piglets to see while we were there. From the cottage you can walk around their duck pond and out onto lots of local walks with a wealth of bird life along the river. Merrick did an excellent job as our guide for the first walk and playmate for our dog Sprocket. 10 minutes in the other direction is the sea, beaches, and some of the most beautiful coastal walks in the country. There's lots of useful information on places to visit at the cottage as well as an introduction to all the animals and their charming characters on the farm. It’s a home from home in a beautiful location and would love to return sometime and find out how Keith makes his Choritzo.

Thanks to Gwendolynn for writing such a lovely review of Cassie's Cottage, our self-catering cottage attached to our farmhouse. Gwendolynn has described the cottage brilliantly and we are delighted that she, Ian and their dog Sproket enjoyed their weekend. The cottage is dog-friendly and we do not charge for dogs, a bonus for those who want to bring their pet away with them, but not pay through the nose for doing so.
We're also glad Gwendolynn mentioned our self-sufficiency here at Spillers. We raise all our own meat (pork, lamb and chicken), grow our own vegetables and have our own free range hens for eggs - all of these are available for purchase by guests - including the hand-made choritzo mentioned in the review!

We have just got home from a lovely weekend at Spiller's Farm. We wanted to stay somewhere close to River Cottage, as we had booked the "Saturday evening at River Cottage" experience. Spiller's Farm was perfect for this - only a ten minute taxi journey away.
From the moment we arrived Keith and Bridget were so welcoming and made us feel very much at home. Merryck (their gorgeous golden retriever) was also very good at his job of meeting and greeting! We had a look around the farm straight away and saw the new litter of piglets - sooooo sweet!
Our room was lovely and the kingsize bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious - Keith makes his own sausages and bacon which was very tasty.
On the Friday evening we wandered into the nearby village of Colyford and had dinner at the Wheelwright pub. The food there was very good - definitely recommended. On Saturday Merryck took us for a walk around the lake and up to the river, where he got very excited about chasing the stones we threw for him! We spent the rest of the day walking along the coastal path from Seaton to Branscombe via Beer - very pretty coastline - and travelled on the old electric trams which run between Colyford and Seaton.
I would highly recommend Spiller's Farm - we are planning to go back soon to meet the new lambs, and of course to catch up with Merryck again!

We have just arrived home after staying at Spillers farm. What a find! We had a brilliant time. Our recently refurbished room and bathroom were spotless, spacious and smart. Keith and Bridget were so lovely and welcoming, from the moment we arrived we were looked after. Keith showed us around the farm this morning after a delicious breakfast (sausages and bacon from the their own pigs and eggs from their chickens) introducing us to all of the animals, and Merrick the dog took us on a walk around the lovely lake. We had done a course at River Cottage, went for dinner at Hix and spent the next day visiting the nearby seaside villages / towns of Beer and Sidmouth. Musbury was a perfect location for all. We will certainly stay here again, already thinking about when! Amy and James

Thank you Amy and James for your kind words. We have recently re-decorated all our bedrooms and have also re-furbished the en-suite shower room to the Superior Room in which Amy and James stayed. We are delighted to have received such positive feedback so soon after the re-decoration and hope to see Amy and James again soon!

My 85 year old Mum and I had our first Christmas staying at the gorgeous, cosy and comfortable 'Cassie's Cottage' which is part of Spillers Farm. This is not our first visit to Spillers Farm, infact we feel like we are related to Bridget, Keith, Merrick and all the other animals. We arrived to a lovely decorated cottage, with Christmas tree, decorations and candles. I cannot stress enough just how wonderful the whole 'Spillers Farm' experience is, you really do have to stay there to really appreciate how relaxing and heartwarming it is. Mum and I also attended a beautiful Crib Service on Christmas eve afternoon at Colyton Church, which was just up the road and they even had a real Donkey taking part who came from the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth, another lovely place to visit. Keith and Bridget are two of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet, and Merrick the golden retriever is gorgeous as is Sila the cat, who came in to the cottage several times during our stay. We were also so very lucky to be able to help out with looking after the animals which was a truly wonderful experience, makes you realise just how hard people on farms and small holdings work, in all weathers!! Thank you again to Keith and Bridget can't wait for our next visit.

I have never before written a review on a place I have stayed, but in this instance I must make an exception. The reason never before is that it would be imprudent to do so as my business is in hospitality, supplying every type of establishment from 2 star michelin restaurants to 5 star hotels, guest houses, fast food, pubs and B&B's throughout the UK. (I must add however, that I have not and do not supply goods or services to Bridget or Keith or Spillers) We booked Spillers as it was just 2 fields away from our friends as the crow flies, and it had many positive responses listed.
Keith and Bridget were the perfect hosts, the king size room and bed was perfect, the breakfast was just the same. The attention to detail in as much as supplying make up remover pads for the female guests, and even ear plugs for those that are woken too early by the cockerels. ( I would find that unlikely as the bed can only be described as laying in a feather of marshmallows! )
Having a docking system for ipods is just another small extra touch making the visit more memorable.
All in all, I would recommend Spillers, Keith and Bridget wholeheartedly.

We stayed at Spillers Farm last weekend as part of a visit to River Cottage - it was one of the local places recommended on Hugh F-W's website. Really handy location, close to the coast at Seaton and handy for Lyme Regis. Lovely site overlooking the River Axe and Devon hills beyond. The owners Keith and Bridget were really welcoming and helpful with arranging taxi transfers etc. The bedroom/bathroom were cosy and well-appointed - the bed in particular was really comfy and I slept very well. Breakfast included homemade sausages and home-cured bacon, along with a range of homemade preserves, which was a real treat. Spillers Farm is a working smallholding and Keith very kindly gave us a walking tour of their land after breakfast, introducing us to various animals including the pigs, chickens and ducks. Their big, shaggy golden retriever Meyrick also enjoyed following us around and I can imagine this being a really great place for families with young kids who want to experience a bit of the Devon farming lifestyle during their stay. Keith is clearly also really passionate about animal husbandry and the whole place felt sort of like a mini River Cottage-style set-up, with hams curing in the kitchen and a big vegetable patch out back. All in all, I really enjoyed our stay and would love to return sometime. The only minor downside was a rather fiddly front door lock so if you're planning a late one, make sure to get a quick tutorial so you don't have to wake Keith and Bridget up in the wee small hours.
